BvS Batman v Superman - Reviews Thread [TAG SPOILERS] - Part 1

So I finally watched this turd (I won't divulge how I saw it; that should tell you enough).

The more I think about this movie, the angrier I get. I went into the film with really low expectations overall, and I was somehow still flabbergasted by what I watched. The opening sequence with Bruce in Metropolis (sans the Thomas and Martha flashback) is definitely the highlight of the film for me; thought that scene was well-done. The film went downhill fast after that.

Wonder Woman: She was okay, I guess. I wasn't wowed by her on any level. She wasn't offensive though, so I guess that means she was great by this movie's standards?

Batfleck: He was okay too, I guess. He tried. I'll give him that. He wasn't terrible, but he wasn't great either (and I think that's due to the script). The warehouse "Save Martha" sequence was near-perfection (if only Bats had not killed those guys ...). I'll take what I can get with this movie though ... It was nice to see a Superhero in this film actually SAVE someone in a fashion that looks really cool. I'd love to see more Batman action sequences like this, just without the killing.

Superman: Easily the worst aspect of the movie. He was a mopey little crybaby thoughout the entire movie. Did he hate Batman because he wanted the negative attention towards Superman to move over to Batman instead? Because it sure seemed like it. Hey Supes, at least Batman is killing bad guys; not thousands of civilians in collateral damage! A-hole. I can understand why Batman hated Superman in this, easily. The reasoning for Superman to hate Batman, though? WEAK. You can easily tell the people who made this movie gave zero poops about Superman's character in this.

Lois Lane: What a waste of Amy Adams. Moving on ...

"Lex" Luthor: What can I say that hasn't already been said about how awful Eisenberg was? Moving on.

This movie is lifeless. It's ugly, it's boring, it's messy, it's difficult to follow if you aren't into comic books ... I don't know what else I can say. This movie is a Fant-Four-Stick level of terrible in my book.

Haha. Superman's sad face when he flies off...too bad, because Cavill would have been a great Superman in a different Superman movie.

But I think Lex Luthor is worse. In fact, [BLACKOUT]I think they should have let Zod live and saved the neck-snapping for this guy. I wouldn't care if Superman shoved a piece of kryptonite down his throat, ripped his head off and rammed it up Doomsday's slimy butt. [/BLACKOUT]

Sorry for that mental image, I just hate this version of Lex Luthor so much.

This is where I knew I'd love this review, and it got more and more entertaining.


And I guess the people behind the movie deserve a share of applause aimed their way, for making for way for reviews as entertaining as this.

Finally saw it.

Let's be frank, Snyder is a clumsy film maker. I don't think he is an altogether bad one but, in an interesting contrast with directors like Christopher Nolan who sometimes insult audience's intelligence by belabouring expositional dialogue, Snyder tends to assault the senses by belabouring the plot itself. The risk with this movie was always too much stuffing and too much to do, and so that has proven. In any event, Snyder is never going to craft a neat, snappy, poignant and understated film.

So be it. Because he clearly loves his comics and, for me, he has a better emotive understanding of them than any other director working in this ludicrously saturated genre. Along with Batfleck, he has produced the most convincing and authentic screen Batman to date. He has shown a degree of courage (rarely acknowledged or appreciated) to actually explore the character of Superman and his cultural relevance. He has also - inevitably - given Wonder Woman fans a lot to cheer about.

I think Snyder knows his limitations as well as we do, and he has successfully worked within them to give us a technically mediocre, loud, and sententious movie that is nevertheless a delight to this old Batman fan and cause for a great deal of optimism.

Now give me more Batfleck.

As I noted earlier, I walked out of this movie feeling that it was nigh-identical to The Dark Knight, both structurally and in terms of narrative intent and execution, but I also walked out of the film believing that, like The Dark Knight, it was very successful in "owning" the world in which it was set and building on what had come before it, for better or worse, which is something that I appreciate in any property as a whole, but especially when it comes to "shared universe" stuff... especially when it's all too common for filmmakers to 'cow-tow' to fan complaints and change things too dramatically.

That last line sums this movie up to a T...nearly. I don't think it's FFINO bad, but it was pretty crap.

The hate outnumbers the love because this film is inspiring true film fans to get very angry. There were NO character motivations that made any sense. Lex Luthor is cheesy and underdeveloped. They rushed to create a story that matches the books EXACTLY like Amazing Spider-Man 2 did to kill Gwen and the Affleck Daredevil did to kill Elektra. They hammered in classic stories from the books way ahead of time and without justification or merit.

Plus, Bruce comes across as a genuine tool and not a noble hero. No subplot came even close to making sense. There was no humor at all. The slo-mo effects looked like a video game cut scene. Even the brief video game action was spaced out to the point where 85% of the film is bad exposition and dialogue. No one had any chemistry AT ALL and there was no depth to the story.

This is just a really bad movie and THAT is why a lot of non fanboys hate this film and why the WB needs to get this message. The future is at stake.

I'm also a Batfreak and I also love dark in themes, atmosphere, and tone.

But I didn't like BvS because of the execution.

But thanks. It does suck. I was so mad that I didn't like it, and the more I think about it, the angrier I get.

I still think the acting was perfect. Yes, even Jesse Eisenberg. Even while I didn't like this Lex Luthor at all, I honestly don't think that was Jesse's fault. Which I know seems weird, but I truly believe that Jesse and every other actor in this film did absolutely everything they could possibly do with what they were given.

The problem, for me, is what they were given. For me, it comes straight down to Zack Snyder.

One day, maybe towards the end of the DCEU run, I refuse to lose faith, or at least the end of Ben's run as Batman, I hope we get a Batman/Superman: World's Finest type of story. A Batman and Superman story most people can enjoy. A fully developed Superman juxtaposed against the Batman. Two sides of the same coin and one of the oldest friendships in comics.

Props, this is something you don't see in the fanboy community all that often. I disliked the movie but it's nice to see someone who did express this sentiment. I really wish I could've liked it.

For the most part, I really disliked this movie. I didn't like Man of Steel, but it had a lot of redeeming qualities. This movie had less.

I never cared for Snyder Superman, so I'm not surprised that that did not change. He sucked all the fun and hope out of that franchise. I struggle to care about this character and his supporting cast. I'm still not sure about this Lex Luthor.

But, I actually liked Affleck Batman. It was cool to see an older, more experienced and realistically jaded Batman.

Wonder Woman to my surprise actually worked well in this film

The overall tone and feel was just too damn dark for me. And the pacing was just awful. This movie felt longer to me than an extended cut Lord of the Rings marathon. So much build up. So much time spent brooding.

I'm one of the few that really enjoyed this film. I wouldn't place it on Dark Knight status, because the movie was flawed - to me the movie felt VERY similar to the Dark Knight Rises. TDKR had themes/plot devices that had so much potential, but certain flaws that held the movie back. I understood right away that some ppl would hate this movie, simply because of the quick transitions from scene to scene. It felt a lot like reading a comic book.

The good
- Batfleck is the truth. Ppl *****ing about him being too violent makes me laugh, because the film did a great job of explaining why he changed.
- Resolution between batman/supes. Again, people who didn't look an inch deeper to the resolutions need their hand held while watching movies I guess. The resolution was brilliant, as was the building manipulation of the two.
- Action scenes were on spot.

The bad
- Poor editing. Transitions between scenes, inclusion of certain scenes (Clark talking to his dad scene was brutal), and certain subplots took too much time to develop.
- Lex casting should've been someone else
- Wish Supes would've saved a few more ppl (thought the early Montage was great - wanted more of that)

Overall I thought it was great. No way in hell it deserves the RT score. BTW, every non-comic boom reader who saw it with me loved it.

I loved this movie and after a second watch and reading some articles and other people's positive viewpoints on it and understanding it better, I must say this is an absolute masterpiece!

Loved the story, the themes, all the performances (especially Lex who was a pleasant surprise) and ofcourse the awesome focus on Superman's goodness.

Felt like the perfect mix of Watchmen and MOS, both movies that I love.

A perfect 10/10 for me.

I enjoyed the film for the most part but it needed a better editing job. Zack could have lost a lot of stuff,sped other slow shots up,consolidated a couple of scenes and cut runtime w/o losing anything important I believe. For instance Lois' two visits to see Swanwick could have been done in one. No need for Bruce to go down into the cave and look at the suit before leaving for the party. The Robin suit could have been shown in another cave scene. Several times in the movie the scenes quickly jumped back and forth for very little reason and to a disjointing effect. I would have much rather he include another action scene like Bats breaking into Lexcorp.
To me the movie was plodding for a long time. No need for Bruce visiting Mausoleum with the flowers and the whole blood and bat thing. We know he's tormented. And of course he has some nameless trollop in bed with him when he wakes. Leave that out and give us more Lex in the ship. We know Bats is tormented. We don't know what Lex is up to.

I think this partly bears out what I said about Snyder being a clumsy filmmaker: it renders most praise and most criticism equally valid and invalid.
