Battleship - Part 1

True. He did seem to succumb to the whole party lifestyle. Going out with Britney Spears and slobbering all over her in front of the press etc.

I think the thing that hurt Farrell there for a bit was his drinking problems. It led to bad choices, some less than decent performances, and the start of bad talk about his work habits.

I remember when Colin Farrell was in a streak of blockbusters and acclaimed films in the early 2000's, such as Minority Report, Phone Booth, Oliver Stone's Alexander, and The New World. But later news of him checking into rehabs and even a sex tape controversy derailed his career, and he was in a major funk until recently, when he did Horrible Bosses, a remake of Fright Night, and now have Total Recall coming soon. Farrell isn't short on talent, but when it comes to making personal decisions, he wasn't the brightest bulb in the room.

If Colin *box office poison* Ferrell can get the lead in a big budget action movie like Total Recall, Kitsch can too but it took Ferrell many years after his failures to get that lead role and guess what he did? Gave good performances in smaller films. That's what Kitsch has to do to survive, I don't see him doing it because I think he sucks at acting but who knows? Channing Tatum was excellent in 21 Jump Street and I didn't think much of him before.

I think Tatum is starting to improve. As for Colin , I always thought he was good. It's a shame people didn't like Miami Vice.

And Sam is still anonymous with the public after being in 5 mainstream films.

YEah I think that speaks volumes. I mean after Avatar finishes whenever that is or his involvement at least he's gonna disappear.
If Avatar didnt make Worthington a big name, nothing will. I remember when he was fancast for everything.:whatever: Christ.

Didnt know he had a drinking problem
And it took him years to recover and that happene when his directing career picked up with Gone Baby Gone. And now he's in a Malick film and will be directing The Stand. Who knew?

I really like what Affleck did to his career. As someone else said, his acting even got better.
He actually was an alcoholic too like Farrell if I remember correctly.

As everyone has already said, Kitsch just needs to appear in smaller non action movies. I liked him a lot in Friday Night Lights, maybe action movies arent his thing or at least he needs to choose better action movies, but i dont see that happening any time soon. Garrett Hedlund, not in the same boat as Kitsch, took whatever clout he gained from Tron Legacy and probably used it to help him get roles or at least on the radar for On the Road and the Coen Brothers new movie

Alexander bombed. I don't anyone even saw New World. You can hardly call it a blockbuster.

Also, he was the lead in Miami Vice which was a huge movie and that one bombed as well.

Why are people prematurely burying Taylor Kitsch's career....? This is completely baffling to me. According to BOM, his *average* box office is $67 million. His last three movies have made a *combined* $889 million worldwide (XMOW $373 mill, John Carter $273 mill, Battleship $243 mill).....and the receipts are far from reaching their final tally on the 2012 films. How do people even *define* those kinds of numbers as "bombs"....?

1) He made a 10 min appearance in XMOW
2) He was the star of John Carter which made 273 mill on a 250 mill production budget. Flop.
3) Battleship. Debuted low in America and is probably only gonna get worse domestically. And it's already sliding down overseas. Underperforming
4) So being the star of two $200 million underperformers arent gonna help someone whose leading man career is just starting out.

Yeah and look at what their combined box office costs to make were. Nobody in hollywood cares about totals they care about profits made sad enough x-men origins was probably the most profitable out of the 3.

John Carter lost disney 200 million dollars its now one of the most notorious flops in movie history. Don't think battleship at the rate it's going isn't going to cause another executive to lose his job.

I can't believe you would even try use his attachment to these movies as evidence of his success?

I think also, Taylor didn't offer anything to the table with both films. Say what you want about Ryan Reynolds, but even in a bad movie, he tends to have enough gravity to keep his character remotely interesting.

Taylor, as of right now, is in the Sam Worthington boat: Good looking dudes with low charisma. Now charisma is not something you can learn: You gotta be born with it. Sometimes it's subtle like Ryan Gosling's, sometimes its just through sheer force like with Jason Statum. It's a swagger that you can't put your finger on.

I think Taylor's final test is Oliver Stone's Savages. If he can pull it off in that one, he'll be okay. He just needs to rebuild his career from the ground up.

I was never the biggest Farrell fan myself, but I agree he has thrown in a couple of serviceable performances in the last couple of years. I remember watching a movie on netflix recently where he played a sorta sadistic Russian criminal in a prisoner war camp during WWII who breaks out with some people and tries to escape through siberia and so on... can't remember the name... good film though. He was pretty entertaining in that role.

I'm not trying to defend Kitsch, and I wasn't overly impressed with him in Battleship (although I'll give the script credit for being less colossally stupid than I thought it would turn out, and the movie didn't really start going all Bayformer until the third reel), but I don't read JC and Battleship as massive bombs.....rather more a case of Kitsch having appeal overseas but lacking in the U.S. I genuinely believe he could have a career in Europe (and still get the big budgets); just not in Hollywood.

Kitsch has no appeal. No one went to those movies because of Kitsch. And John Carter is yet to break even, it's a bomb.

They are going to lose their studio's money, they are massive bombs no matter how you "read it."

Hell, people even got fired when John Carter bombed. And Battleship is not as big of a bomb as Carter but it is still a bomb. You can't change reality just because you don't like it.

John Carter was a bomb. It's not opinion it's fact. It barely made back it's budget. And the studio needed $600 mill for it to be a success.

Battleship isnt bombing it's just underperforming. It's not making that much money overseas anymore and it didnt debut well in America. It's not like word of mouth is strong and competition coming out every week Battleship will have a problem getting past $100 million domestic which is not good

I dont know what you mean that Kitsch has appeal overseas. Neither film is doing that well overseas either.

Again these are facts, not an opinion. It's all in the numbers. I wish I could say otherwise, because I like Kitsch.

I agree. Just look at Superman Returns, which grossed about $391 million WW (according to Boxofficemojo), but no one would call it a hit because its reported budget was $270 million. It's about the profits, not the revenues, for big-budgeted movies such as this. Btw, this movie didn't exactly made Brandon Routh into a star, did it?

:ninja:

Dear god does that movie look awful. Routh must have a terrible agent if he can't get the lead in another semi big budget action flick.

How bad can he be doing if he is currently building a new house in Austin? I don't think the guy is going anywhere, he certainly doesn't seem to be going broke any time soon. :p

Like what people said before, I think he just needs to rebuild his career with supporting roles or indie movies.

This movie is like that John Candy movie "Cool Running", except it has Native Americans playing Lacrosse? Looks like it's a direct-to-DVD movie.

Looks more like The Mighty Ducks.

...an atrocious, poor mans version of it.

Tough for anyone to "act" your way out of a movie like Battleship. Even if you have zero charisma/machismo/appeal like TK does.

Don't forget In Bruges. Man he was awesome in that. Well, everyone was.
In Bruges is Farrells best movie for me.

Can't wait to see the next flick his done with that director which features Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken as well.
