Black Friday

So, people in other professions DO deserve to be treated like crap???

As I tried to express in my point, jerks, idiots and scam artists screw up peoples day in EVERY profession.

I do understand that retail is sometimes a job you HAVE to do...but Im not sure i sympathize. You take a job full aware that you have to deal with the public. Sometimes a customer gets really out of hand...but you hear so much complaining about Black Friday because "oh, its so busy and theres so many customers". Get over it. You dont hear doctors complaining about too many patients, or lawyers complaining about too many people filing law suits, or construction workers complaining about too many houses to build. Your job is people...accept your fate.

And for teh record, i have wored retail, and would have no problem doing it again. Sometimes in my line of work I get burned out...too much traveling...whatever...and so I'll stop for awhile and get a normal job. Its cool.

In what way does "working retails sucks" equate to "nobody but us gets to complain about their job"? I'm not denying that other jobs are tough or complaint-worthy. They are. And despite what you've been led to believe, people in other occupations complain about their jobs too. EVERY line of work has people who complain about their jobs. Why are retail workers not allowed to do it?

They aren't required to take it. If a retail worker spoke up against a customer they'd be fired on the spot.

Im talking specifically about complaining about Black Friday. Its your job...magnified. Quit complaining about all that money you're making.

If someone ssteals from your job or is a special kind of jerk, by all means, complain. It makes for good stories. But to complain about a day, simply because you have to work hard and deal with more people who are spending theri money to keep you employed is just laziness. You might as well say "I like working when theres no work to do, but i hate it when i have to work".

you've obviously never worked retail, cause the customers who give us the most problems are the ones who hate spending money, i.e. Black Friday shoppers. and go out of their way to piss us off with the justification that they pay our salary. Black friday isn't the retail job magnified, it's the cheapskates of the world multiplied.

I actually have worked retail, managed a few very high dollar stores.

Also, having worked mech for some pretty huge tours, that means I've worked retail with 40,000 or so customers a day, most of which not spending a dime. So, I understand the grief, but its the very point of the job. Thats like a carpenter complaining about having to swing a hammer.

It's not the extra work that bothers us. Yes, we hate working really long shifts, but standing up from sunrise to sunset isn't so bad when you're hyped up on coffee and Red Bull. Talking to customers back-to-back isn't so bad when you can strike up a few conversations with them.

The real reason we all hate Black Friday is because of the jerk to chum ratio I mentioned earlier. It's not that there are a lot of customers. It's that there are a lot of unreasonable customers, all shopping at the same time. You normally find one jerk for every ten customers. Now you're finding one jerk for every three. And as I said earlier, I've seen customers yell at co-workers so badly, they were reduced to tears.

Actually, I'm alright this year. I got out of retail. I'm a UPS delivery boy.

I dropped my dad off to the airport around 6am an realized I still had about 45 minutes till work so I went to Circuit City and I was able to walk in find Dead Rising and Resident Evil 4 for $10 each and walked out within 5 minutes. As I drove by Best Buy I slowed down an saw that every parking spot as far as I could see was taken. I also got a quick glimpse inside an saw just a HUGE crowd stuck in the doorways, just insane. But I had a quick and easy Black Friday and got what I wanted since Im to broke for a big HD tv for now

In the not too distant future, someone will post a "remember Circuit City?" thread. They cant even get business on the busiest shopping day of the year.

The mindset is, I am spending my money, ergo paying your salary, so I can do whatever the hell I want to you. Even people that buy like a pack of gum feel they can treat the employees that way. And the boss will always take their side, at least to their face in order to keep the sale.
Hell, at my job we have to stop people from stealing yet we can't hurt them. Which means that if I punch a robber in the face I could get fired, even if it's in self defense.

The ironic thing is at the Circuit City I was at this morning they had a great set up to prevent shop lifting, problem is nobody was there to buy a
f***ing thing

considering they shut down most of their stores, many people are already saying that
