At the recent Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) 2006, the world's largest electronics and IT show, which was held from September 1-6, 2006 in Berlin, Germany they showed off upcoming Blu-Ray DVD titles. Including X2 and X-Men The Last Stand.

The site took some photos of the Blu-Ray X-Men display. Looks like it will have some new features that 'regular' dvds don't have and razor-sharp picture to boot.

What is Blu-ray?

Blu-ray Disc

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. Despite the different type of lasers used, Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup unit. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 is what enables Blu-ray Discs to hold 25GB/50GB.

Blu-ray is currently supported by more than 170 of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer, recording media, video game and music companies. The format also has broad support from the major movie studios as a successor to today's DVD format. Seven of the eight major movie studios have already announced titles for Blu-ray, including Warner, Paramount, Fox, Disney, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate. The initial line-up is expected to consist of over 100 titles and include recent hits as well as classics such as Batman Begins, Desperado, Fantastic Four, Fifth Element, Hero, Ice Age, Kill Bill, Lethal Weapon, Mission Impossible, Ocean's Twelve, Pirates of the Caribbean, Reservoir Dogs, Robocop, and The Matrix. Many studios have also announced that they will begin releasing new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD, as well as a continuous slate of catalog titles every month.

Wow. Nice find Retro. Those screens look nice.

I'm looking forward to the upgrade, but not until Blu-Ray comes in at an affordable price. I'd rather wait and see who wins the war between BR and HD and go with the winner rather than waste my money on a medium which will become defunct.

Will Blu-Ray replace the dvd?? I hate these kind of new product transitions. :(

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are an improvement in technology over DVD. They will eventually replace DVD in the same way that DVD replaced VHS. It's not quite as big a leap however, and DVD hasn't been around for that long, so Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are going to take longer to take off.

Yeah I mean dvd has barely been around now there is already a new technology. It pisses me off. I mean its great that it getting better and better but I hate just getting settle into something then looking at probably dropping it for something else. It would make me happier if these Blu Ray discs also had unscratchable surfaces.

I wanted FOX to support HD-DVD.

I am not going to buy a blu-ray.

XBOX 360+HD DVD add on RULES!!!!!!!!

I hope Blu Ray flops and FOX then suffers a bit as they have not given fans good comic book adaptions.

If they brng F4, X2, X3, F4-2 on HD DVD then i will be happy.

Who needs Blu-Ray? The 360's DVD player now upscales to 1080p anyways, so the standard X3 DVD will be just fine - unless of course, Fox puts some extra stuff on it ;)

Blu-Ray discs are better than HD. Look up the specs. They hold more information.

True, theoretically.

Currently, HD-DVD is half the price ($500 vs $1000), and has better picture/sound quality. Also, Toshiba has gotten triple layer 45 GB HD-DVDs working, whereas Blu-Ray is still struggling to get it's dual layer 50 GB discs.

There is no way in hell that I am going to buy the Stan Lee edition for $30 bucks. I live in region 1..US...thanks Fox...so I will get the single disc for like $15 bucks and then by the blue ray/2 disc when it comes out again.

The special edition and the single disc have the same exact stuff on it. Who wants to pay $15 more dollars for a comic book???

Not everyone wants to buy a 360.

I never brought up the PS3, where as you did bring up the 360, you raving fanboy.

I remember before the Blu-ray and HD-DVD war started that everyone was sure that Blu-ray would take the lead. The opposite has happened and HD-DVD is really becoming the front runner. At the moment Sony is having problems with their dual layer Blu-ray disc and Blu-ray machines are full of bugs. I think Fox would be smart to jump on the HD-DVD bandwagon as well as Blu-ray because at this rate HD-DVD will win the High def war.
