Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Yes, Sonic is doing better than what were initial estimates (it's got A Cinemascore which is great.), Sonic has good RT rating and it's made to appeal to a wider demographic. BoP is not directly competing against it as it is 'R' rated movie aimed at different audience.

Birds of Prey is doing well in International markets, despite the Corona-virus outbreak and fear surrounding it's spread in some Asian territories.
Also, BoP is not released in China (due to epidemic), which also affects it's collections.

I assumed that BoP will do better in US than in International market, but I was wrong.

Due to being R-rated.

The point about Sonic being basically this:

2020: When Sonic The Hedgehog is a bigger draw at the box office than a movie starring Harley Quinn.

I think there's a lesson in Sonic's success for WB- sometimes just give your core audience the character design it is used to, there is very little upside in changing it dramatically and you run the needless risk of alienating a portion of the people who would be most anticipating your film

I don’t know why this isn’t more obvious to million-dollar earning execs.

So true, it should be blindingly obvious.

To be fair, Margot wanted to change her look up so it wasn’t so overly sexualized.

Over here in England, (where the movie has a 15 rating I think) literally nobody wanted to go see it. Not in my uni course, not in my friend group, not in the Marvel & DC society.
The one person who saw it studies film at uni, and he just said it was 'aggressively meh' and nothing more.
So that squashed anybody else's desires to go see it even more. Word of mouth is definitely important in marketing, and if a person we trust doesn't recommend something, we're generally less like it to go see that thing in a lot of cases.

On the other hand, people were REALLY hyped for Sonic. I think that may be due to the whole redesign debacle, but also because the trailer looked really fun.

I haven't seen BoP (I'm not going to the cinema alone, I'd just feel sad and stupid), but I really don't think the trailers helped it. The Suicide Squad trailer was a lot of fun, no matter what you think of the movie and I believe that the BoP trailer didn't make it attractive to a lot of people.

Also, I don't think the character designs help it neither.

Guys, Birds of Prey's box office would've been virtually the same even with comic accurate outfits. I mean hell Harley still looks like Harley. Its simply because nobody understood what this movie was and trailers not grabbing the casual audience, if they even knew a movie was coming out with Harley.

I get that and respect it, but that's another problem with the film, the mixed messaging. You don't want Harley showing skin but have have Black Canary showing a lot of skin ( in my opinion a pretty trashy looking way)

I mean, Harley shows a lot of skin. She's running around in a sports bra in a portion of it. They big, key difference is that the camera isn't going to be leering at the women. I mean, just compare how the two movies portray Harley while she is soaking wet. You can dress sexy without being sexualized.

Margot looks like Harley, but the other actresses don't look like their characters.
That in itself isn't an issue, but the costumes, imo, looked lazy and not at all like the original characters. There's many ways to adapt their costumes to movies, not make it sexual and still look good.

A complaint I read (from some men) is the characters lack sex appeal.

So, showing skin does not always amount to sexualization.

Lol that’s exactly what I thought, some feminists were like using this to trash Zack Snyder’s Amazon looks (which had the same design as some from Patty’s films), when Black Canary was showing more than half her boobs.

In 2nd place, with a $20M 4-day, is Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey, an expected $62.1M by Monday. Pic’s 3-day of $17.6M is -47%. Updated PostTrak exits are now at a middling 3 1/2 stars

So we are right this is easily going to pass 20M and Mendelson said under 40% would be a win, around 46% a draw and over 50% a loss

A lot of that is because boob armor makes no sense. And is impractical as actual armor. And look at the dude bros that whined about Phasma and the sudden female Stormtroopers that you needed the voice to tell.

Good to see the film picking up steam from the original predictions.

Ya to be fair most costumes don’t make sense anyway, and the thing about Amazon armors is that Patty Jenkins has the same type and not really anyone complained about it lol.

Batman’s chin would be busted first thing in a real battle lol

I mean Sonic the Hedgehog is a PG-rated family film. It's also a popular iconic franchise. Sonic is a culturally iconic character.

To me that's not so surprising. People may have forgotten, but Sonic the Hedgehog in 1990s pretty much changed gaming and game distribution forever. Sonic the Hedgehog is why we have Tuesday game releases.

The irony in all this is the character's most iconic costume is also the least sexualised. She's literally covered from head to toe. Look at her costumes in Arkham City, Injustice, Suicide Squad, and in the comics over the last few years, it's gotten more and more revealing. Yet her iconic costume from when she was first created, the one she's most famous for, covers her entire body. The only skin you see is her face.

Which was also painted. It wasn't until later they went with the chemical bath, bleached skin angle.

That said, her BTAS outfit was form fitting.

True, but no more than Catwoman's in either Batman Returns or TDKR. I find it rather strange also from Robbie that she has issue with Harley's outfit but was more than happy to get her gear off entirely for a Scorsese movie. Only one of these movies will have clips on porn hub.

And yet, Bruce Timm really, really, really pushed the envelope.

Eh, Black Canary was working at Black Mask Club, so in the given context, she cannot really just coverup unless that's the usual practice of singers at Clubs.
