I find it happening a lot this summer whereby a movie will have a big 2nd weekend drop then a good 3rd weekend drop. Happened with Transformers, Indy and a few others.

Barbie will be shooting up that list by this time next week. Wonder how high it can go.

So the three biggest hits of the summer are Barbie, Oppenheimer and… Sound of Freedom. Now that’s a triple feature. Nobody predicted this at the start of the year lol.

Audience preference is changing. Thank goodness.

I expected it to do about $300M total run. It did it in one weekend

Just want to point out that I think it’s very funny that Barbie wasn’t even an option on here.
Neither was Oppenheimer and it has a big chance of being in the top 3 films this year. It's been a very unpredictable year for box office.

I admit to being a bit surprised by Mission Impossible. I honestly thought the goodwill from Maverick would propel MI into the $800 million plus club.

If anyone had told me a year ago that Mario Bros and Barbie would be billion dollar movies, I would have laughed in their face. Well not literally, I'm not that rude :cwink:

I love how wildly unpredictable the box office is becoming. It's a positive sign that we're gonna get more fresh, interesting ideas in the years to come.

I thought it'd have performed better as well. Its run isn't close to over yet but I've said it in other threads, I think that having the "Part 1" in the title didn't do it many favors because I think a lot of average moviegoers are put off by that. The average audience member might say, "Going to the movies is expensive these days. I like the Mission: Impossible movies but if this is a Part 1 I can wait until Part 2 comes out, see that one in theaters and rent/watch this one on streaming before I see that and go see Barbie or Oppenheimer this month instead since that's what everyone's talking about."

It's not a deterrent for every franchise but all I'm saying is if it wasn't, then they'd have marketed Dune as "Part One" from the get go instead of it being a surprise when you're watching the movie.

Barbie will be up to no.2 very soon. Will be interesting to see how its later holds are and how much it can close the gap on Mario.

I’m super-stoked for Barbie and Oppenheimer, but it is disappointing to see the MI people not get rewarded for putting out such a great film.

Still, in its first weekend Dead Reckoning Part 1 opened bigger than any other film in the franchise (the previous entry finished at around 800 million), so by far its biggest problem is its bad legs that are the result of opening one week before the Barbenheimer mania and of losing all IMAX screenings and hype. Most other things are inconsequential really.

I'm heartened by the fact that Elemental managed to overcome a terrible ad campaign by Disney, some bad faith reviews, and the constant attacks by the anti-woke crowd, and has become a modest hit. It's a marvelous film that totally deserves it.

Both Flash and Indie did so much worse than what anyone was expecting, while Guardians more or less performed to expectations was a very solid performer. For me, the real box office winner for the summer isn’t Barbie(though don’t get me wrong, that’s no doubt doing very well) but Oppenheimer. A R-rated three hour drama film with virtually no action scenes, and little CGI is outperforming most of the action filled CGI explosion riddled tentpoles. That’s far more impressive to me than Barbie, which, like Mario before it, is nostalgia driven IP. I don’t want to take away from that movie’s success that I’m still kind of shocked that Oppenheimer is doing this well. Guess it goes to show you that success can be an unpredictable.

And it’s kind of funny that a lot of the movies in the poll either bombed or underperformed outright. :funny:

It really ended up benefitting from sticking it out and being the only movie out there right now that's totally fine for little kids. You've got The Little Mermaid and Across the Spider-Verse too but they both have some stuff that may be a little intense for the under 5 crowd.
