Was hoping for a bigger post-Maverick boost.

It's a bit higher than the opening weekend of the previous film, which did really well overall. It's going to depend on its legs and overseas numbers, which Fallout had really good. Of course due to covid delays and restrictions this one cost significantly more, around 300 million, so it will still struggle to break even. But it can still do better than the numerous flops we had this summer.

A lot of good variety on offer this weekend for people who haven't seen much yet. Great to see.

Barbie cost $150M to make excluding marketing. It will make that back in 1 weekend. Insane.

Done!

the motion picture industry is reaping one of the biggest domestic box office weekends on record with Warner Bros.’ Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimerlighting up an estimated $308M+ overall three-day. That’s the biggest weekend post pandemic easily burying the weekend when Spider-Man: No Way Home opened over Dec. 17-19, 2021 and all pics tottaled $282.9M. Per Comscore, this weekend will be the fourth biggest of all-time after Avengers: Endgame frame (April 26-28, 2019; $402M), Avengers: Infinity War‘s weekend (April 27-29, 2018; $314.8M) and the weekend when Star Wars: Force Awakens debuted (all pics over Dec. 18-20, 2015 grossing $313.2M).

Box Office: ‘Barbie’ Eyes $150M Opening, ‘Oppenheimer’ $75M Start – Deadline

And it’s amazing that they are original movies and not a sequel or reboot.

You’d hope the studios would recognize from this they need good writing and acting and negotiate but nope they won’t.

Yeah, their answer will be "greenlight Barbie 2", "more Mattel toy movies", more World War II biopics", "a new Einstein film". It's always about replicating a success with minimum risk and minimum effort.

Oh we are definitely getting a Mattel Cinematic Universe. They’ve made that clear

The reboot we actually need…

Amazing to see and I prefer it like this when a whole range of films are contributing rather than one all-timer heavyweight.

You know it’s been a good weekend at the movies when deadline can dedicate an entire article to all the records that were broken.

‘Barbie’ & ‘Oppenheimer’: All Box Office Records Broken – Deadline

(oh, and this being the fourth largest weekend may rise to third. Late reports have great Sunday hold for both films so the final is looking like 162 and 82 vs. the current 155 and 80 estimates.)

Nice, word of mouth is getting out and more people want to be part of the event.
