BvS BvS Rottentomatoes score - how important will it be, and what do you hope for? - Part 6

You can tell the entire collider crew was holding back from being totally honest about how much they were disappointed and didn't like it. They are in a rough position. They have to avoid fan boy backlash for the good of their channel. in a few months even campea will admit he didn't like it and that 7.5 will become a 5.

I'm seeing more restraint from critics with this movie than any other blockbuster since Pacific Rim. It's like they don't want to pick on th slow kid.

He did smile, on more than one ocasion:

He was smiling (it was a little creepy 'cause he looked a little sadist lol) when he went to Africa and was about to send that terrorist far away from Lois, he was all smiles at the bathtub scene, he was smiling before the "this is my world, you're my world" moment. And this is just at the top of my head, I'm sure there were other moments.

Ah yes. [BLACKOUT]When he killed that guy. Gotta love s movie where Bats and Supes just kill **** all the time. So cool. Much hero. [/BLACKOUT]

The length fanboys will go to defend what's clearly not good is astonishing and quite frankly very very cringeworthy. You see a couple in this thread and there are probably PLENTY of them out there. If you liked BvS it just proves your taste in movies isn't as (how should I phrase this without being insulting...uhmm strict ? For better or worse not good). There are people who love Transformers believe it or not but it's still trash. Critics don't have an agenda, unlike fanboys. It's their job to review movies. BvS is not a bad movie because it's dark or lacks humor no it's bad because it's just a bad movie overall. Fanboys need to understand this. There is no conspiracy against their stuff.

I'm a fanboy too btw but I'll be the first one to admit when my favs don't turn out good. Being a fanboy and being objective aren't and shouldn't be mutually exclusive. You can be both.

Yeah. And here's the thing about RT. I feel like it's a flawed system in that at times, some films should be rated higher or lower. I think MOS deserves to at least be fresh, and I think that Thor 2 should definitely be rotten. But it is a pretty good barometer for a film's quality if the scores are really high or really low. Take Batman and Superman out of the equation. Let's just say this was some random movie that you thought looked cool from seeing the trailers. Opening weekend comes around and it's at 33%. There's a good chance that you'd skip it. Be honest. And even if you do still go see it, you'll probably be expecting a bad movie. It's the same if you checked the RT and it was at 85% - you'd be expecting a good movie. And 9 tmes out of 10 you'd be right.

For people who say that bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are meaningless:

The Tomato Meter for BvS (particularly its unfavorable nature) is currently trending on Twitter and Facebook.

Explain to me again how this doesn't affect word of mouth.

You don't have a choice if you use certain apps. Flixter puts the RT score right next to the name of the movie.

So, the dislike consensus is (I haven't read details on reviews since I haven't watched the movie): The pacing is weird, specially at the beggining, hard to follow, plot holes, and motivations unclear. The good is the acting, the setup for JL and WW.

Also on the bad side I think is Superman not being boy scout Superman, but that's inherited from MoS so I don't care (though I don't like it). It does render the phrase "day vs night" senseless...

I've also seen a lot of: The score is horrible, Lois is a throw away character, and people either love Lex or hate him. It seems pretty 50/50 on that one right now....give or take.

Have you seen it yet? Or are you just going by the trailers? I'm not knocking you, I'm just asking because I'm HOPING that they let Cavill use more of his natural charm in the actual movie. Because yeah, the trailers mostly have him scowling or looking internally tormented.

I'm going off of MOS, practically every bit of footage we've seen from BvS, and reviews from my close friends.

No. In a very bad way no.

that was a quick turn about. how did you go from being the guy yesterday everyone was defending as 'but he liked the movie,' to now scathing it with some hot meme lingo.

I think you SHOULD BE BOTH. If you love something, be critical about it. Don't give it a pass on mistakes (as long as you are constructive about it). I'm often in that position regarding sports, I get a lot of bad looks when I criticize my team, but being blindly supportive just leads to more flaws. If you love it, demand it to be good.

I think Gadot is going to get off pretty easily. She didn't have much to work with and people are praising Warners for finally embracing a female superhero. The true test of her mettle will be her own movie next year.

Cavill, as you said, had much more to carry but that also, in many ways, works against him. He is the face of the movie (alongside Affleck) and people seem to like Affleck...so that means the blame will be put on Cavill.

As for Eisenberg....yeah...he is definitely going to take the biggest lumps. Like you said, some will love him, some will hate him. Frankly, I don't see him coming back to the role (by choice). Eisenberg protects his image like a lioness protects her cubs. He wants to be a credible, critic darling. He wants to win Oscars, he wants to be renowned. He wants to be in the class of Leo DiCaprio and the likes. He is willing to do bad movies for paychecks (Now You See Me and its sequel, for example). But at the same time, he tries to keep those low key. I think he did this movie to get some mainstream cred and the big paycheck...it made sense in his eyes...comic books are hot, look at the praise Ledger and Hiddleston and other villains are getting in these. He could do the big budget without hurting his reputation. Now that it has...I think he might step back (kind of like how Clooney stepped back from big budget movies after B&R).

I agree about Gadot. I even realized in myself that I thought she was pretty good when I left the theater, but then I started remembering more and more that I thought was iffy (not to make it a bad performance though) so there's still a big question whether she can carry a movie, where she'll have to show off at least some emotional width.

I'm sure he'll get some flack as he does come across as wooden at times. I just felt that in a comparison with Gadot I'd give him a bit more props than her.

Good comparison with Ledger and Hiddleston, that kind of performance is probably exactly what he and the filmmakers had hoped they could create. A charismatic villain with a unique personality, that still fit in with the tone. Sadly I think he got lost in quirkiness and landed outside of the tone of BvS.

Take Zootopia... I took my kids to see that movie and it has an amazing RT score. I didn't think it was very special. It was certainly not at Toy Story levels. But you see that 99% and think it must be the second coming. I wish sites would use film scores instead. The RT score is much less important to the film score it lists underneath the RT score but in much smaller font.

MT sales are actually up since the reviews. So yeah. We'll see about the WOM when the movie's in its second week.

As time goes by and more of the population becomes involved with social media, the studios will not be able to get away with a critical drubbing like in the past. Just have to see how it goes for this one.

Ah okay, thanks

I think Cavill's a good actor. I think he's shown that, he certainly a presence and charisma, but they are really clipping his wings in these films. It's a colossal waste in my opinion.

Cavill was great in The Man From UNCLE and had loads of charisma. If his performance is flat in this that down to direction and or the material he has to work with.
