BvS BvS Rottentomatoes score - how important will it be, and what do you hope for? - Part 6

no kid friendly doesn't mean it has nothing in it for kids. in a way, a bit like SR.

it... is just a little heavy.. not light hearted like the marvel movies.

My friend who saw it last night said some of it is quite sadistic.

It's unforgivable in my opinion. All these years of defending Snyder and co, if I see this film tomorrow and find out it's as dark as people say and not suitable for children, then I'll never defend them again.

Bingo. These are not mutually exclusive concepts. Batman can be dark without gunning people down. A Batman movie can be dark without being so dark that it is inaccessible to a wide portion of the audience, hell inaccessible to the audience that these characters were CREATED FOR. A movie can be both mature and accessible for all audiences (the Nolan trilogy for example). And if you can do it with Batman, you can certainly do it with Superman.

wow.. you sound very angry. take a rest.
it is a good movie. u will see it one day.

someone said batman gleefully kills in this movie--is that hyperbole, or is he shown gunning goons down with the batmobile's machine guns, all while laughing like a maniac? is there any wiggle room for 'maybe they lived' or are his actions explicit and the audience is left without a shadow of a doubt that this batman kills?

I felt it was hyperbole. There's a few scenes where he's careless, perhaps more careless than in Nolan's films.

There's two instances (outside of dream sequences) that I can think of where he actually kills. One was more like a collateral damage kill that you could argue wasn't intentional. The other was an intentional kill, but it was to save someone else's life and was literally his only way to do it. I'm more cranky that Snyder thought he had to put that character in that position. It was MOS/Zod all over again.

What about WB/DC wanting their gazillion-dollar budgeted mothership of a movie franchise to appeal to a broader audience and make lots more money?

General audience doesn't enjoy this depressing **** either when it comes to these movies.

That's on them, not on me. Their money, their choices.

I got nothing to lose here. I want my sister to be a DC fan (well, she already is) - and DC/WB makes a ton of stuff that's oriented and/or appealing to her. So, this movie being oriented to adults doesn't concern me.

(That isn't a fault, unless you are an investor at WB :oldrazz:)

As for GA, well the movies opens today/tomorrow - so we will know soon enough, how the GA sees it.

I will be watching BvS later today, so I will know if the movie is appealing to BvS.

Even if it isn't, it doesn't matter. There's WW, Aquaman, Flash etc - all made by other directors. And all of them aren't going to be of the same tone.

No, I am saying that people are generally full of ****, actually. I don't buy for a second anyone here's idealized version of Batman kills or Superman is a dark, gloomy emo. But I think they are so desperate to like it and defend Snyder that they will say "**** these characters, **** the general audience! Snyder is right! We want darkness!"
Well said.

sadistic... because we have lex luthor. he is pure evil in the movie.

Looking at the RT score should be done in a like/dislike basis only. It's not an overall score where the movie is dissected into different categories and applied to an overall scoring standard. RT doesn't work that way.

The product on screen is either good or bad. It's a very broad brush to paint it with, but it's effective at giving the general audience a good gauge on the product.

Zootopia was a good movie and 99% of the critics said yes. I happen to agree with them, it was a good movie. Check the unsplattered tomato for me and move on. Now if we want to argue over its place in the animated movie world of the last decade, then that's a different animal to take on.

I understand how RT works. However, when apps like Flixter put the RT score on the side of the name of the film and lists the film at 99%, people think it's an amazing movie. That's not what the 99% represents. 99% of the critics thought the movie was at least decent. No where in that 99% is the film's quality represented. The film could be 3/5 stars on consensus but still have a 99% RT score. That's why I wish the average score was more prominent. I understand a lot of reviewers don't score movies but there has to be a better way to judge a film besides an up down vote.

A little off-topic but the Onion posted an article today:

"‘Batman V. Superman’ Promotion Urges Filmgoers To Just Get This Over With."

I'd link to it but it contains some strong language.
Not as funny as their Green Lantern video a few years back ("Sure, Green Lantern, why not?") but still pretty good.

There's a difference between [BLACKOUT]killing and murdering. this Batman is a murderer. Superman kills here too. [/BLACKOUT]

I dont think TDK was anywhere near an approach catered to kids at all

I don't know anyone who wants these movies to cater to kids. Even Marvel movies.

Batman killing people didn't cost Burton his job. Batman Returns being too dark, macabre and weird a film in general was the issue.

Sounds familiar...

Yes. And Superman isn't much better. Even in the "heroic" montage he looks like he's saving people because he has to. He's literally frowning the whole time.

Someday, perhaps these "adults" who are professing their love for murderous, hyper-violent versions of iconic, beloved superheroes are going to grow up and have children of their own. I'd like to say that their "screw the kids" mentality will change, but somehow I doubt it.

Christ, even my local radio station in Ireland (they love everything FYI) tore into Cavill and the film.

Why do you care so much about a detailed score? Oscar's, SAG, Razzies? Do you work in the film industry? Not trying to to be jackass to you, just curious why breaking down a film to an aggregate value is so important?

I just want to know what to expect going in so I don't come out upset with a feeling of flushing money down the toilet. With the current RT score, I know BvS might not live up to my expectations. But I'm ok with that now that I've seen the RT score with a good amount of reviews to back it up. I'm going to toss it into the Transformers category and enjoy it with my family. OD on chocolate Almonds & Dr.pepper while Bats kicks ass....

right on point

just because we want a DC Movie universe to work doesn't mean we have to blindly accept everything we are given.

Hey I want your honest opinion. Is it really as bleak as everyone says?

Also the premise of the media and governments turning on him really intrigues me. It forces Superman to contemplate his place on the earth and his ideals. Is it not interesting or? Because it sounds like a very intriguing premise to see Superman being blamed despite trying to do good and ending with why we need such a hero.

So I know the consensus on the quality of the film. That means more to me than the amount of people that liked or disliked it.

I was on my way to post this.

The Onion said:
At press time, Warner Brothers had reportedly kicked off a last-minute Batman V. Superman media blitz in major markets advising audiences to just bend over and take it like a champ.

:lmao: when The Onion is running stories about the bad reviews, you know it's bad. Tell me again that the reviews mean nothing and aren't affecting WOM.

Even Greg Sestero aka Mark from The Room is making fun of BvS... LOL

And that's the selfishness I don't understand. Kids ARE the target demographic. Always were. Always will be. No need to cater to kids but purposefully going out of your way to making them inaccessible to that demographic is just wrong.

Like you say, the problem is why Snyder has to put the character in that position. Also, Batfleck could have just shot the guy with the rifle and that 's it. But not, he had to shoot the flamethrower and blew up the whole floor, possibly with all the mooks he just beaten up

It is the questionable excessive violent that I have issue with

Yes. It's nihilistic.

Me too. Too bad that's glossed over as an afterthought.

No, The Onion is clearly just biased. :o

Wrong. After all, who on Earth would breed with these miserable people? :cwink:

But seriously...are these people so void of joy regarding these characters? Do they not remember the first time their parents gave them a Superman comic or bought them a Batman action figure? Do these people not remember rushing home from school to watch BTAS? Why do they begrudge a movie being accessible to all audiences INCLUDING children? Why do they begrudge an entire generation a universally accessible film of these characters?

In my personal opinion, no blockbuster Superman film (especially one attempting to launch a franchise) should have complaints of there being nothing in it for kids.

It's Superman, the thought of them taking this route really does sadden me.

yep. :csad:
