Agreed. I felt like I knew the whole story arc of Iron Man before I saw it. The trailer made it quite predictable.
All the comic book movies are predictable to me. And I Iron Man's origin going in. The movie still rocked though.

Well...one comic book movie wasn't predictable. Watchmen. I had no clue how that was going to end. It rocked too so I say just make a good movie and it will be alright.

Last note: “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Thor” — both May 2011 releases — are also fielding huge interest on Flixster, as well as more overall activity than any of the June 4 releases.

:awesome:

I won't be fretting with numbers and statistics with this movie. Haters and pessimists can worry about the box office, I am not worried about it.

I tend not to pay too much attention to that stuff either. We're getting a Thor movie. I want it to do well, but even if it doesn't, it'll at least exist. Despite his auspicious beginnings as one of the heavyweights in the Marvel universe, Thor hasn't been a particularly popular character for decades now (although his series is on the rise again thanks to JMS' run), so the fact that a movie is just a year away from becoming a reality at all is more than I ever believed we Thor fans would get.

I think word of mouth is really what will tip Thor beyond TIH.
Hulk had much better name recognition coming into theaters obviously, but it was hindered by a very recent screen adeptation that bombed, an only "meh" reception in theaters and the overall problem with HUlk across the board - he's simply not that interesting (yet).
Thor is hindered by a lack of name recognition for both the character AND the main actor as well as people being a little cheezed out by the fantasy element. That said, Thor is coming into the game off a great tie-in with one of the best comic movies ever made (IM2). People also really responded to LOTR, so the fantasy element could really resonate.
Especially with Destroyer looking as ill as he does, with BRanaugh bringing his A game and with the fact that comic movies are finally learning that sticking to the source material as much as possible is the best way to go.
If the movie itself is good, people will be all over this.

Tech and gear head guys respond to Iron Man. The Abercrombie, Friday NIght Lights crowd will love Captain AMerica. Hulk is a fantasy for the powerless nerd in all of us. But THor is for the Fantasy nerd. That would be me and all my people. Since LOTR, our numbers have drastically expanded. Here we are now. Entertain us!

cool and i hope all the big films for next yr will do as well as possible for their respective studios.

To me the mythology of the piece could be a big draw. There have been tons of movies done on Greek mythology, but all most none on Norse mythology. Infact the only movie I'm aware of specifically about Thor, is a horrible SyFy produced movie called Thor: Hammer of the Gods, that stared one of the kids from Home Improvement as Thor.

If they got a superbowl slot, having him wear his helmet in the teaser might help 'connect' the character to the immediate audience...............................

*cough*

I'm glad you brought this up. As I'm quickly approaching my 40's, growing up I read these comics hoping and waiting for the day these would be up on the big screen.

I remember in the early 90's when James Cameron was supposed to direct a Spider-man movie, and I thought "great" and then it never came out. You just kept waiting and waiting for these movies to come out an they never did. I remember seeing Roger Corman's Fantastic Four trailer in the theater. Sure in retrospect I'm glad that movie never came out, but it was frustrating as a comic book fan.

I remember when Charlie Sheen was roumored to be cast as Peter Parker, and now he's 44.

So yeah, I hope the movie is awesome, but at least they're going to make it and it will be on the big screen. DC has only been able to put up two of their major characters on screen since 1978 and the first Superman. Soon to be three with GL, but how long did that take them.

I appreciate that Marvel is taking risks with these characters. Sure they haven't all panned out, but truth be told, on some level I've enjoyed all of them.

Thor will likely beat TIH because it's something new and refreshing. Everyone knows the Hulk, what he does, and have seen him in a million formats and mediums, so there wasn't as much interest in TIH especially given, as we all know, the crappy 2003 Hulk.

Yeah, it's like I say, all these movies have a pretty predictable plot and end the same. It's all about the ride there.

hey now don't forget Catwoman!

Universal made Marvel hedge it's bets and played it like a reboot-sequel. They tried to play it in such a way that it would connect to the first movie (like Bruce being in South America in hiding), while recasting everyone and trying to make it connect to the new "Marvel Cinematic Universe".

If they would have let Marvel just come out an advertise this as a new origin, and a totally new story, ala Batman Begins, it would have done better.

After the first weekend when it fell to expectations they started leaking the Stark cameo scenes in new TV ads to try and draw people in with the popularity of Iron Man. It came off as desperate.

It's a real shame because TIH was a great movie, and unlike Ang's Hulk, it's one you can actually sit through and enjoy.

What? TIH was it's own movie. It had absolutely nothing to do with Hulk.

They did it the right way. That's the way a reboot should be done. If you are only going to wait 5 years, you shouldn't rehash material or characters. The next Spidey series shouldn't go near GG or Ock until SM6 or so. Same with FF. The fact that it picked up in South America neither helped or hurt it. It was just a forgettable movie that already had to overcome a lot. The whole "they had to re-do everything from scratch is BS, because people almost unanimously agree that the OC scene was both informative and fulfilling and nothing more was really required. Everyone has their own opinions but what doomed it in is pretty clear to me, marketing, simplicity, and Ang Lee.

totally tony it sucks waiting and waiting to get these films going. and i agree as bad as some of marvel licensed out films have been its nice they are willing to try and get a character out there and hope it turns out good. Some times they get their good films like xmen or spidey and sure soem times they have their crap films hulk 2003/electra and all that. But i like they try. Compared to dc waiting and waiting for not much going on. But hopefully things there will change with gl.

Man, people tear Lee's Hulk apart but, honestly, I actually liked it more than TIH. Neither is super-great, but I liked the heavier focus on the psychology of Bruce Banner in Hulk, as opposed to the greater emphasis on big dudes hitting things in TIH. But I suppose that's also why I'm not much of a Hulk fan in general.

corp to me i personally also not a big hulk fan, but i thought tih was the better film. But sure i didnt like the 2003 film but there was some parts that were ok in it. But i just didnt like the style/type of film ang did.
