Chapter 57 - "1961" Discussion Thread - 4/13/09

Good episode. My only 2 minor gripes are:
1) Peter should have touched Alice and absorbed her power. It would be nice to see Peter do something other than fly.
2) Apparently Sylar does not need to have physical contact with whomever he is replicating? If this is the case then why bother with Nathan? Just pose as Nathan, get close to the President, kill the President, and replicate him.

I wish Peter would meet up with Ando already and have him supercharge his powers so he goes back to getting powers from anybody he's even around and be the badass he should've been from the beginning.

Speaking of which, Hiro has part of his powers back but not all, you'd think it'd be pretty common sense for him to just be like "Hey Ando, supercharge so I can teleport again." But I guess they're holding off on that happening cuz I'm almost positive that's what happens when Hiro went into the future and saw Ando "kill" him.

This episode was awesome squared. I loved seeing every as teenagers. the 60's music was great too. I KNEW someone in the restaurant was going to make a stink about a black boy dancing with a white girl and Charles was gonna use his powers to fix it. I they should find a way to bring young charles back like Geoffrey Wilder in Runaways. That would be awesome.

Great ep overall. Loved getting to see Angela's backstory and the founding members as teens--Angela is by far the most interesting character, with HRG coming in at a close second.

I also liked the idea of starting a new company, in a sense--as a family, the Petrellis+HRG can continue in the spirit of the founding members. Loved the scene at the end in the diner paralleling that last meeting in 1961.

I had a total geekgasm when she revealed the whole sock stealing thing. I remembered thinking in season 1 how weird it was that she seemed so fragile and weak when she stole them and then later in the season shes all manipulative and calculating and being like huh? Ya know and then last nite i was all like OH! Now it makes sense to me and all I can think is that I really really hope that Fuller being back now can save this show because even though Ive always loved this show I was starting to think it was beyond saving and it still has a long way to go but at least they have taken the steps to make this a great show once again

Oh and Im really liking the idea of The Petrellis starting a new company and doing it right. Hopefully if it goes good later in the show we can start to see Peter being corrupted or something if hes running a new company with mama. Ya know a whole absolute power corrupts absolutely type of thing. I could totally see them naming an episode "Absolute Power" Right up there alley

Decent episode, but it felt like mostly filler. Luckily it will set up some cool ****.

This may have already been brought up before but Chandra Suresh's appearance in this episode really bugged me and for two reasons:

  1. How old is Chandra supposed to be? He's certainly supposed to be older than Erick Avari (the guy who originally portrayed 'present time' Chandra), who was born in 1952 and would've been only 9 years old in 1961. Considering he's a fully qualified doctor participating in clandestine research, he'd be at least 25 years of age at the minimum. This would make him at least 70 years old when he died in 2006. I find that a tad bit too old based on his physical appearance in 2006.
  2. Another thing is the actor they chose to portray 1961 Chandra. Chandra originally looked North Indian (i.e. Caucasian features) in 2006 yet he looks decidedly South Indian in 1961 (i.e. noticeably darker skin tone along with other facial features). Had they simply done the entire flashback in black-and-white, this problem would have ben at least less noticeable.

I love this episode, Alice is an awesome additon to the show. Can't wait for her return. I like the characters when they were young and think they should do a spinoff of them on their adventures while heroes is on hiatus. Another thing did Daddy Petrelli take Charles' powers when they all became older, because thatz what I think happened.

Nope, remember in the first season, Charles had a convo with Peter even though he was invisible. the reason he knew he was there was because he must have read his mind.

Not only that, if you go back to the beginning of Season 1, wasn't he just barely discovering people with abilities??? I may be wrong.

Same thing as with Christine Rose, who was born in 1951 (I think), yet Angela was 16 in 1961.

Weren't they making people "forget" also? Maybe once they found the Haitan and his abilities, they used him on Chandra. It was just his natural affinity to the subject that led him back.

I really enjoyed this episode, and the casting for young Angela was just spot on...I thought she was definately cute!

I could really enjoy seeing more of the younger years, that's for sure.

It was nice just enjoying a simpler story for a change...and the lack of Hiro/Ando was good. Sorry if I offend any fans...but they have ruined episodes for me...

i wonder if she had the dream to start the company, or just lied about it like she did with her sister

Agreed. They're a little hit or miss.

I think she probably lied since she was shown as a bit of a Cassandra in her early years (i.e. she only predicts bad things and nobody believes her until it is too late).

She could have, but that could also be taken as the Company being a bad thing.
And she did dream about her testing with Suresh, which wasn't bad.

Who talks to other people about good dreams? Usually you just talk to people about disturbing ones.

I wish clair would get killed off, every time she says anything I cant help but roll my eyes and wish for her to die

He knew the powers existed, and he was trying to persuade others that they did he just never had any proof. He got kicked out of the school he was teaching at because of it.

I also always assumed he knew about the powers from the get go because I always thought Shanti had powers and was killed by the virus she had, the one from season two.

That makes sense I guess. This is still bachelor Chandra from what I can tell though. Traditional Heroes style I guess, give us snippets of detail that end up leaving more questions than answers.

It makes the most sense, especially the part about Shanti.

Weren't we told in Season Two that the virus only attacked people with abilities which disabled them, then eventually killed the person? So it would make sense that Shanti herself had an ability that her father knew about?

I love that it was Angelas idea to start the company.
but we definitely have to find out bout the beginnings of the company. we only know about the past 30 years (vaguely at that) when all the members were present.

i want to know about the years 1961 - 1979? and how they met Kaito, Maury, Adam.

Charles seems to be the leader of the gang, so im guessing after Linderman met Arthur in 'War buddies' they became more influencial, cos young Linderman seemed quiet.

This may appear in Season 3 Graphic Novel. Hopefully.

I agree with this. I couldn't take her seriously either with that fake looking wig of hers, I swear its a live :oldrazz:

Just watched like 2 months' worth of Heroes. This episode was pretty good and I hope we get to see Alica again
