Justice League Ciaran Hinds is Steppenwolf

To me, it seems like they have worked some more on the texture of his face. The earlier trailers didn't reflect on him very well.

That’s awesome!

Yeah, looks better for sure.

I must say the design is great. Whenever you see a silhouette in the distance, like in that clip and that shot from the "history lesson" his appearance is very striking.

Also, look at the skull on his belt:

He is a fellow Danzig fan:

I really like the effects his axe produces everytime he swings it.

I guess my only gripe,. and its a small one,. is that he is just a palette of grey,. there seems to be 0 color to him. I would prefer if they added a little more color to him.

CG looks terrible for Steppenwolf and for some of the green screen backgrounds, and for Cyborg.

I'm shocked this movie costs $300 million with CG like that.

The special effects industry is in dire trouble is if this is the best they could come up with for JUSTICE LEAGUE of all things with that much money.

Also, not trying to be mean or use hyperbole, but I've definitely seen video game CG cut scenes with better graphics than this and more realistic humanoid bodies.

I'm just at a loss how we can have such strong work with CG motion capture like with Lord of the Rings as a trilogy or the Planet of the Apes movies more recently, and then we see this, which looks like a step back in the wrong direction. The green screen backgrounds also look poorly integrated.

Give me classic model work and matte paintings and backgrounds every day of the week if this is the best CG can do.

I have no idea what you guys are watching, the CGI looks great to me.

The industry's fine. Between Apes, BR2049, and Transformers....clearly specific teams can pull off some extraordinary things with CG. Only lesson to be learned with JL is you can't just throw money and expect better results.

I'm hoping by the time JL2 gets off the ground (if at all) we'll have a whole new VFX team heading these films.

Transformers is part of the problem. Each movie got progressively worse and failed to make people believe in and fall in love with the robots.

I would say The Force Awakens is a stronger example. JJ Abrams deserves more credit for not relying on CG as a crutch to tell his story. He wisely used lots of practical FX, in-camera FX, riggings and set-ups for the film, and it looks way better as a result than I would say many of the run of the mill blockbuster and CG-schlockfests we are getting as of late. And the CG that is in the film looks fairly good and mostly convincing. It makes the movie look way more immersive.

BB8 is believable because an actual BB8 puppet is there on set most of the time, and the CG simply erases the rigging that's propelling him or what have you.

My only gripe is that the digital eyes come across a little too lifeless for my taste. This is a common issue with CG characters, though.

The rest looks pretty good to me.

CGI is never my favorite go-to, I find 1 out of 10 movies that utilize it actually pull it off well...and I can't remember the last time a super hero movie had consistent CGI where it doesn't take me out of the movie, I felt that Doctor Strange had a good scene, then you get to dormamu, and its like damn this is green screened a little to much.

LotR I thought had great, but then you see the Hobbit and I found that Jarring in comparison.

I personally find a nice blend the best way to go about things, I do feel they need to spend some more time planning out sequences to ensure that the CGI doesn't look so jarring, I know practical effects have gone up in price and that was a big reason that the hobbit had switched to CGI.

I do think that a lot of directors of the comic book genre, really try to show off all the powers of heroes and the transitions usually don't go very well, Man of Steel's fight with Zod have some amazing scenes, than you have other ones that youre just like "damn the CGI"

I find it funny that TDK/TDKR, had some of my favorite scenes in a CBM just for the sheerfact that they blended with the rest of the movie so well and not really reflective of how well choreographed they were/weren't.

Sometimes directors go for practical effects, but producers come in and replace them with CG in post.

Agreed. But I don’t think it’s a sign that CGI has hit its ceiling. I think it’s a sign that Snyder and his FX people have hit their ceiling.

I thought the CGI in MOS looked pretty good. But other than that, I feel like Snyder’s stuff always looks like a video game cut scene. Steppenwolf looks as fake as Doomsday. I always see people praise his visuals but I’m not sure why.

Because those visuals are what some people want. It's like a comic book ripped straight from the page. Some of us love that. Others don't. It's not that hard to understand that some people have a different taste.

I had a bigger problem with the editing than I did the CG, and that's in both MoS and BvS.

I guess I don't see the big deal in him looking like a video game because I've always thought CGI visuals in Snyder's films looked like video games. I thought that was the appeal.
