Wouldn't making a bad female-led movie that basically kills the character be worse than not making one at all?

But anyway, I understand your apprehension. BvS has made things interesting, to say the least.
Yes, which is why Wonder Woman has a ton of pressure on it. If it isn't good, that won't be where the blame is placed. The quality won't matter.

Does Suicide Squad count as a female-led CBM?

According to Cara Delevigne, the three women have the three most interesting parts.

But then again, she could just be biased towards her and the other female characters.

I think Harley Quinn will be the main character, but it's more of an ensemble, really.

Maybe it's because he's being played by Will Smith, but I always assumed Deadshot would be the "lead" character.

Harley, Amanda, and Katana?
Unless Enchantress is more interesting than Waller.

It's a good step but female-led solo hero films are going to be more important I think. WW is crucial and Cap Marvel will also be very important.

Thought Deadshot was almost always the lead or second in command when he's part of the Skwad.

Yeah, Will Smith is not a guy that likes to play second fiddle. Then again he's not much of a draw anymore so he might have to adapt.

It's an ensemble. Smith and Robbie might be the biggest characters, but I wouldn't say either of them are "leading" the film.

I don't get the impression Harley is leading, although she may be the biggest personality there.

Finally saw Civil War.

No doubt this movie was made as a reaction to Batman V Superman. They took BVS' collateral damage plot and did it 10 times better.

They also did everything BVS tried to do and failed at, including launching new heroes and franchises in an organic manner.

The fight between Cap and Tony was actually emotional and over something that actually mattered.

If future critics and audiences have a 'Marvel Bias,' it's honestly justified at this point. They've earned it.

WB/DC has a big pit to climb out of, and they'll never be able to catch up now.

Grace Randolph just posted a video about MCU vs DCCU directors where she characterizes MCU directors as formulaic (but successful, not necessarily an insult) and DCCU directors as auteurs (directors with distinct artistic styles). Thoughts? Makes sense to me.

WB, as stated often enough, has always been a more director driven studio than Disney and Marvel respectively, now joined at the hip, have ever been.

But that doesn't matter when, with Snyder, we've seen what supposedly unlimited freedom can bring when the filmmakers in question can't execute their intent coherently or competently enough.

I haven't seen it yet, but I don't "think" it was made in reaction to BvS. CW isn't new by any means and the previous Avenger films (esp AoU) were leading us to this point.

That the Russos did a better job isn't particularly surprising. They killed it in TWS.

What makes James Wan, Patty Jenkins, Seth Grahame Smith any more of an auteur than James Gunn, Ryan Coogler, Joss Whedon, Favreau etc?
I think that term 'auteur' gets thrown around a lot and there are very few directors that truly deserve that label

It's true that DC has let their directors hold much more control than Marvel, at least in the past, and for the most part they have better track records. Unfortuantly, giving Snyder unlimited control backfired with BvS. It will be interesting to see how things may change.

Why are you listening to that idiot Grace Randolph is my question..

Especially after her public shaming 2 weeks ago across the internet after she tried to gain clickbait by validating the 'Agenda against DC' conspiracy theories.

She's basically talking out of her rear for Youtube views.

I'd say it's surprising. What they pulled off was a really tall task.

And the producers confirmed that CW was indeed a response to BVS. They said they wanted to aim higher and take bigger risks to stand out.

I honestly think Marvel Studios set a goal for themselves to top BVS. And sadly for WB/DC, it wasn't hard.

This makes me excited for the Phase 3 films.

Yeah. Shane Black doesn't have a distinct voice.

Imagine the sheer ignorance, brand loyalty and brain washing needed to remotely entertain that notion.

While I disagree with Grace a lot, she still makes interesting points sometimes.

I think it has more to do with how much the director's creative voice comes through in DCCU so far. Can't speak to Wan and Jenkins but both have made names for themselves. I don't think that the Marvel directors are less artistic, it's just that their movies get passed through a Marvel filter for the integrity of the brand. Coogler should be interesting!
