Comedies for Oscars anyone?

If it helps, "The Departed" had some of the funniest lines in any recent movie.

"F**k you."
"I'm tired from f**king your wife."
"How's your mother?"
"She's good, she's tired from f**king my father."

Marky Mark was the real best supporting actor last year.....feel it

Comedies that are indie comedies or kind of dark with extremely subtle humor are the only ones that wil garner attention from the Academy. Right now animated comedies are the only ones that will get Oscars.

I agree, and it is ashame cause most of the time they aren't really that funny

And the one indie comedy I find flooringly hilarious I Heart Huckabees, gets no love from the Academy

Histoy people. Learn it. The first film to sweep the big categories in the Oscars, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Picture, was, in fact, a comedy.

I do think comedies are underrated by the Academy, but I don't think Superbad and Knocked Up are award-caliber movies. Superbad was hilarious, but it was really just a better-than-average teenage sex comedy. Knocked Up was a mediocre movie with a predictable plot that was too long for its own good. But it had funny parts.

What have you done for me lately though? And by lately I mean the last 50 years?

The Academy does not want to acknowledge the fact that dick jokes can indeed if made right can make a better movie than some sweeping dramatic epic or some dry biopic

Well I mean (and I know RT is not the most credible site ever, but it does have some merrit to it) Rotten Tomatoes has Knocked Up the highest rated live action movie of the year, and Superbad the second to Michael Clayton

as far as my opinion goes I thought Superbad was about the funniest teen sex comedy i have seen

"It Happened One Night" It wasn't really a comedy, more of a romantic comedy. Stared Clark Gable.

I know. Technically it was a screwball comedy. But screwball or romantic, is it not still a comedy? I laugh every time I watch it. One of my favorite films of all time, but then again I'm a sucker for Claudette Colbert.

The Oscars are extremely pretentious nowadays. I thought we all knew this.

Comedies and Horror are the lowest forms of entertainment, duh, don't you watch the fairly oddparents.

Well, "Borat" was nominated for writing, I think. At least comedies are getting closer.

Only certain films have been nominated for oscars, they have to be special and different, films like the darjeeling limited will probably get nominated.

Lee Marvin won best actor for Cat Ballou which was a comedy.

Just my random 2 cent input...but as much as we love Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, etc. I don't think we'll ever see those take home the statue. The Oscars are becoming more snooty, imo. Movies that have been nominated in the past (Star Wars, Raiders, etc) would never be considered today. It kinda goes with the whole "Batman Begins should've won best picutre" type of thing.

I dunno I think the movies that are up for oscars generally fit a cookie cutter mold, Superbad and Knocked Up clearly don't fit the mold, there fore they won't get any love when they are probably going to end up being just as good as the movies that get nominated

If Superbad was directed by Wes Anderson it might get a nod.

The question I originally posed was Are you in favor of Comedies (and Horror movies for that matter) being more up for Oscars, at least when we have three like we go this year, I would appreciate at least one to be up for it

Wes Anderson can be gold, but he is like the Academy's face for Comedy, he's the guy they give a nod to so they don't have to completely give in and not be pretentious, but so they don't seem so pretentious that they won't acknowledge comedy

Me? What have I done for you lately? How can you say that? After last night, I thought what we had was special...

Anyhoo, As Good as it Gets took home a few Oscars in 1997...well, that was 10 years ago. Off the top of my head, I can't think of what movies have won in recent years. A comedy must have won something in there. But it doesn't matter, because no comedy I've seen can hold a candle to "It Happened One Night." Berry Levinson's Tin Men is damn good, I like it alot, but it is flawed. Those are my two favorite comedies. Other than that, I personally don't see how movies like 40 year old virgin and Click can be considered Academy gold. Rename the thread, why can't more good comedies be made? That might be the ticket.

The 40 Year Old Virgin was funny, don't know what your'e smoking.
To tell you the truth if a comedy was to win an Oscar it should be 'Borat' it not only was the funniest movie ever, it had a message....Americans are easy to give-in to racism.

Oy

I never said it wasn't funny. It's just not Oscar material. My grandmother's funny after a few Jameson's I don't give her a gold statue.

Comedies have won Oscars. And it wasn't Borat. If Borat won an Oscar, I'd decline mine if I ever won one.

Which is sort of short-sighted of them as his movies aren't gut-bustingly funny. Neither was "Little Miss Sunshine", for that matter. It's high time that real comedies get nominated, and honestly, I think that Judd Apatow will be the man who finally does it.
