I honestly couldn't be more disappointed by today's news. I really wanted Catwoman and another villain, but I didn't want Anne Hathaway.
Anne Hathaway is a mediocre actress, who doesn't have the look of Catwoman at all. She's very much still a Disney Princess type actress and even her more serious roles - yes, I've seen them - don't compare to the tonality and ferocity I would expect from the Catwoman. I will restrain from making too harsh a criticism on her yet for fear of becoming like those who doubted Heath early on, however, I will say that my expectations are low, and of all the other actresses he had in talks for the lead female role, she is by far the most disappointing choice - as an actress, and as Catwoman.
As for Bane, I admit to being completely boggled by his inclusion into the film. I see that Nolan is quoted as saying he will be 're-imagined' but the essence of the character is brutish and more a follower/venom addict than a lead villain ala Joker or Ra's. If Nolan wants to change him completely to some mob boss or something, then he had a whole variety of other characters from which to pick. Penguin and Black Mask being two very plausible characters that could easily be adapted to the Nolanverse without compromising who the characters are.
I hesitate to say that this is a bad start, however, as this was my most anticipated announcement of this year, I am EXTREMELY disappointed. I'm sure it will be a fine film, but I feel like a lot of potential has now been narrowed to simply keeping this film afloat.
The only reason why I can think of them using these two villains is to distinguish this film and its villains from everything - Tim Burton, BB and TDK. Since they couldn't have Heath back it seems like they went for the farthest thing from him... Here's to hoping it's not a joke...
