The Dark Knight Rises Concerns about TDKR

I thought the cinematography was better 'in' The Dark Knight while the art direction was better 'in' Batman Begins.

“We want the look and feel of the film to be faithful to what has come before in the first two films,” Nolan said. “There was a large canvas and operatic sweep to ‘The Dark Knight’ and we want to make a film that will carry on with that look and feel.”

Im sure there will be some differences in the way TDKR looks but I take it they want to keep more the feel from TDK. Which is a good thing imo.

I have to say as much as I despise Batman Forever Kilmers voice as Batman was perfect.

Thats the level of deepness it should have. Kilmer actually didn't do a bad job its that he was handed **** to work with.
Kilmer was very good indeed.
He does sound a bit like an elderly woman who has smoked one cigarette pack to many a day.

I think the voice suits the beastly appearence. He's using theatricality remember?

I'd hardly want to put words in your mouth, but Batman was obviously not beastly in the least in that film. Both to the audience and in the context of the film's world. Whereas the voice may have been fitting in BB, it's become a relic of the past as his image has evolved into that of a man.

Well... you all know how i feel about the TDK suit. So instead of changing the voice, change the suit!

Besides, even if they know he's a man, he's supposed to be fearsome, so the suit, voice and everything about him should be scary. Watch the Arkham City trailer where they clearly know he's a man. So they re not alone in the dark with a man who can kick their ass. They re alone in the dark with a man who can kick their ass and looks like that.

The blatantly armoured suit makes him into a glorified SWAT. Does he looks like a SWAT? Maybe not, but that's why i said glorified. Because they both are simple men under armor. And Batman should be more than that.

My only concern is that we'll see this:

Otherwise, I'm extremely optimistic.
Agreed.

A disaster?!!
yeah i hate the contrasts of TDK :cmad:
BB is still the best Bat film in my opinion.the most stylish one and has better scenes.Bat-Mobile chase for example is brilliant. The last action scene with the train chase also brilliant.

That probably refers more to the IMAX shooting than it does to color grading or even location filming.

I'm concerned that Christopher Nolan won't get nominated for Best Director after he was snubbed at the Oscars yet again for Inception. Damn the Oscars to hell.

A lot of women I know disliked the batvoice, most men I know were too enthralled with how brilliant the film was to notice the voice. I honestly think that the film was too intense for anyone to notice the voice on the first go around, it is something that irritated only on the second veiwing.

The women thing makes sense to me thought because the last films held batman as more of something that women were supposed to be attracted to. Women want to be attracted to batman, even when there is practicality to changing his voice they want it to be an attractive voice. INHO

Did you actually find it scary, though? Even ignoring how the viewer is sitting comfortably outside the film's world and realizes everything is make believe -- can you honestly consider Bale's Batman performance as threatening? That is a tall claim.

Its still a comic book movie . The film was as serious as you can expect from a superhero film . A cheesy line or 2 imo is necessary .

Necessary? So I guess for Rises they can write a near-perfect script and have to have Goyer or whoever come in to throw in some crappy one-liners just to remind people its a comic-book movie.

I completely agree. Films have to operate consistently both in-story and with audience reaction. There's no point having a force in evil in a horror movie that the characters are understandably afraid of but the audience chuckles at. Batman's voice may make sense in-universe, but it should still be changed a little so it doesn't become a hilarious drinking game with my friends again.

Why do so many people blame almost solely Goyer for some of BB's flaws? Do we definitively know he was the one inserting all the cheesy lines in the script? After all, TDK had a heap as well, and like with BB, most were given to the cops.

Well if you just look at his suit and voice out of context then no he's not intimidating. In the comics he looks like a cheesy superhero and in the movies he looks like a dude in armor with two fins on his head. The point is that in universe he is supposedly scary and that his theatricality is actually working.

Of course we could change the suit and have him dress in fur and fangs to look like Manbat who if you watched the Batman Forever deleted scenes is pissing your pants scary and therefore make him actually scary. But we dont want to do that, we can just suspend our disbelief.

Also, if you are on a dark alley and someone is walking behind you, i bet that you feel some chills down your spine. Now imagine having someone with Batman's look and abilities stalking you from the shadows.

And to get down to the voice, yeah i think it works in the context of "i will become a bat and scare the crap out of people". Talking like Keaton, Kilmer or even the godly Conroy doesnt fit with that. Despite Bale unfortunately not having the best vocal cords for the gig, in my opinion the idea in itself is correct. Watch the Flass interrogation and tell me if Batman could ever be scarier.
