Darkman Appreciation Thread

This is something I'm pretty surprised by. Definitely makes me want to check this out since I've hardly ever heard Neeson reference this stuff.

Aside from the 25 year old featurette about the movie (that's on the Blu-ray) too I hadn't heard him talk about it either. This new interviews were conducted last year. They're freaking great. Took me about an hour and a half to get through them all

^I'm officially sold with that tidbit.

The cynical part of me thinks a role like this from someone like Neeson when they were earlier in their careers would (in the present day) be brushed under the rug. Glad to be wrong.

No no he talks about how happy he was to get the role. He says he was in competition with Bill Paxton ans Gary Oldman. Raves about working with Raimi. The Macdormand interview is great too. She's more critical of the movie and she apparently didn't like how she chose to play the character but it's a very insightful and overall positive interview from her.

I can't wait to get this blu-ray the extras sound fantastic, more than worth the price.

Absolutely worth the price. It's one of the best cult movie Blu-ray releases I've seen yet. Shout! Factory knows how to do it. Features features features to the brim. Something sorely lacking in the majority of home releases

I would have liked a Raimi interview but IMO deleted scenes are an overrated addition unless you have the option to include them in the movie itself (i.e. extended cut, second screen). Give me lots of interviews, commentary and for the love of god BTS featurettes. Those get my money. The majority of blu-ray releases and re-releases have such bland special feature content if any at all. I'm still pissed about The Rocketeer one. At least Shout! doesn't put this kind of stuff out without doing the footwork to get new interviews (The Shadow Blu-ray coming out next month has a great interview with Baldwin). I say let companies like this or Criterion put these movie out instead of the studios themselves. They just care more.

Would there be an interest for a remake amongst posters here?

Not from me. It's a product of its time, and that's what makes it great. Which is why I have zero anticipation/expectations for The Crow reboot. The less RoboCop money grab remakes I get the better.

No interest in the Crow remake either, but I'd be up for a Darkman remake.

Any European/Aussie here who can confirm are the Shout Factory movies region free?

I'd love to see a remake, but I also wouldn't mind seeing a straight-up sequel that takes place right after Darkman III (where he sacrifices his formula for a new face to save a little girl's face, over his own, instead). I'd love to see Neeson back in the role, especially at this point in his career, I think he could pull some serious box-office numbers starring in a Darkman sequel directed by Sam Raimi. If it's R-rated, and marketed well-enough, it could become a big hit amongst horror/comic-book fans alike, and maybe even inspire studios to give Raimi more projects to work on (a Man Thing project might be right up his alley if he considers another Darkman film). Darkman vs. Evil Dead would be an incredible way to press forward with a sequel to both franchises while, at the same time, respecting their continuity.

I really, REALLY doubt we'll ever see Darkman and Evil Dead together. I mean, one is sci-fi based while the other is pure supernatural horror. I'm not against merging two genres but it just seems like a cheap stunt to me. I do agree though that Neeson returning to the role would be great. I don't know that he would do it but... well, I mean, he did do crap like Unknown (AKA The Boring Identity) recently so... if the paycheck is big enough, why not?

Shout! Factory has a reversible cover of the original art on almost all of their releases.

Yep. Here's the DM one:

Both franchises seem similar enough to me. Sure, Darkman's a bit sci-fi, but it's mostly a horror/action film (with a bit of comedy, just like Evil Dead). Imagine if they got Ash (Bruce Campbell) and Darkman (Liam Neeson) on-screen together. That would be legendary! Plus, they could play around with the possibility of Darkman becoming a deadite as well, I think that would be pretty scary, seeing a horrifically disfigured and seemingly unstoppable Darkman become a brainless zombie from hell... count me in. A film like that would be as successful as Freddy vs. Jason (which more than tripled it's $30,000,000 budget, probably earning even more with home-video sales as well).

That sounds terrible. Just.. leave the classics alone

Why does that sound terrible? If it had Liam Neeson, and wasn't a remake, I think that people would love it (I know I sure would). How Darkman vs. Evil Dead would sound terrible to you, or anyone for that matter, I have no idea. Look at it my way: you get Sam Raimi back as the director, make certain it's R-rated, cast Bruce Campbell and Liam Neeson, and have a good script that cleverly connects both franchises together (have a clever nod to the Darkman ending, where Darkman takes Campbell's likeness in the final shot). That sounds pretty awesome to me, and a cool way to get Campbell and Neeson on-screen together (those two on-screen together alone would be enough to get my money, whether it's Darkman/Evil Dead related or not, I just love both franchises, so I'd like to see them keep going or end on a high note).

Darkman vs Evil Dead will NEVER happen, I will bet anyone any amount of money right now, to me at least I would prefer to just leave them in their own separate worlds anyways.

I know it'll never happen, but I'll definitely be a happy man if it does (and it'd probably be the only way to get Campbell to come back as Ash, if he has the chance to work with a classic actor like Liam Neeson, which I don't think he's ever done, unless he met him on the set of Darkman which they weren't on-screen together for).

I looked at it your way, and it sounds terrible to me. It's wish fulfillment fan fiction. I love The Rocketeer. I love Captain America. They are kind of similar. Take place around the same timeframe. Directed by the same guy. Would be great to see Billy Campbell in the role again. So obviously I want a mashup movie right? Wrong

No interest in the Crow remake either, but I'd be up for a Darkman remake.

The upcoming new Crow movie is not a "remake", it's a re-adaptation of the comics and remakes are only for when they are based on motion pictures that aren't based on any source material.

It would be like calling Nolan's Batman "remakes" of Burton's films or saying Dredd is a "remake" of the Stallone movie, NO they are all separate adaptations
