I think the opening weekend numbers are a little disappointing but they are certainly more encouraging than The Amazing Spider-Man 2's for instance. Most everyone knew that film wasn't going to make as much as it's predecessor after opening weekend but Days of Future Past will make more than First Class and I believe sell more tickets. Will it be a raving success? No but the upward trend is a good thing. Well I am assuming a 2.5 to 2.6 multiplier. If it starts dropping extra hard I will change my thoughts on it's box office.

We're in a situation not too dissimilar from Spider-Man, in some ways.

The first Raimi Spider-Man had an opening weekend of $115m and made $404m domestic (USA).

The sequel opened less ($88m) and made a bit less domestic ($373). Then the third movie (though hated by everyone!) opened HUGE with $151m but made the least domestic ($336m).

Then along comes the reboot. The first ASM movie opens with $62m and makes $262m domestic, and ASM2 now comes along and opens with $91.6m (not that much more than DoFP).

These opening figures for the revamped Spider-Man franchise are not that dissimilar from those for First Class and DoFP. The situation isn't identical by any means but it shows the different marketplace we are in, and the challenges of rebuilding a franchise that previously had its own trilogy that closed with a reviled movie.

Uh, no. Just saying that the rebooted/revamped series is doing very different numbers than back in the early/mid-00s

No the film isn't a major disappointment. If it has horrible Godzilla legs it will be but right now there is a slightly disappointing domestic opening and a great international opening.

I understand why some people are concerned. I thought it would make more, especially with the great reviews. Plus, there are so many movies coming down the pike. Edge of Tomorrow is get great reviews, but I wonder if people have Tom Cruise fatigue in the States.

Remember, Cap 2 basically had April to itself regarding blockbusters because Arnold's and Depp's movies that month had some of the worst reviews ever, no buzz and flopped to high heaven. Noah was the only movie that made any serious money.

Well, there's a challenging weekend ahead for DoFP.

Maleficent, Edge of Tomorrow and A Million Ways to Die In The West are all releasing in the UK.

I expect a drop something like the Godzilla and Spider-Man drops. But, after that, there isn't that much else on until Transformers comes out (in late June in US, and July 10 in UK), aside from Fox's How To Train Your Dragon 2, so there's chance for it to carry on doing okay for a while.

I'm expecting decent legs from DOFP due to great reveiws and hopefully great word-of-mouth.

Plus, there's always the audience that waits until the weekend after opening weekend to see a movie .

I have quite a few friends who don't do opening weekends. They intend to see DOFP this weekend and at least another time my fiance and I.

I'm off Thursday this week...so I may see it tomorrow when I get off at 3pm...or see it sometime Thursday afternoon.

I've been sitting at home, looking for something to watch. I already had my X-Men marathon and nothing else seems to suit me.

I've got a fever...and the only prescription is more DOFP .

Thinking about seeing it again this weekend, at least before they remove the film from the biggest auditoriums in the theater I go to. My brother graduates from middle school soon and on Thursday the entire eigth grade class (+100 students) are going to go watch DOFP. Last year they went to see Iron Man 3. It confuses me though because when I was in high school the teachers made a big deal about needing permission slips for PG films.

Spidey knows where it is at. This perfectly sums up the situation. Not everything is either puppy dogs and ice cream or fire and brimstone.

It's definitely not a major disappointment and it's definitely going above $200m. It is a slight disappointment though domestically, even after taking all the known reasons into account that have been mentioned. Like if Avengers 2 makes $210m opening weekend that will be an amazing figure but a slight disappointment given what the 1st has achieved plus inflation plus the added hype from the 1st being very widely well received and awareness being that much higher.

I think calling it a mild disappointment is fair. Considering the marketing blitz, they were probably hoping for a bigger splash.

But it's fair to remember that when it comes to franchises like this, you make the big money with the film following the best received movie. X3, TDKR, SM3, etc. all followed beloved movies. TWS got the Avengers bump. DOFP was following The Wolverine and FC, which were both just OK in terms of reception. Expecting huge BO numbers was silly.

I figured this thing would gross $600-650M, and I think that's fair.

What is most important about DoFP is getting the goodwill of general audiences, and getting them intrigued with what comes next. The numbers we have already seen show things will be fine on the box office front.

i'm not disappointed in the film, nor was I expecting a monumental box office (I didn't even think about the box office, i thought about going to see the movie). And I certainly can't speak on behalf of the studio and call it a disappointment, as if i have some personal financial stake in it.

Just be glad if you enjoyed it, and stop all acting like industry execs (or pundits) over everything!

The legs would have to be pretty darn bad at this point, imo. The film will double the $300m at the very least. Domestically it could take a hit.

I think we have to remember what side of the fence we are on, unless you do work for the studio. They are the ones who have to worry about the box office.

I think we have to remember that this is a discussion forum where all aspects of these films are discussed. The studio is also the ones that need to worry about the casting, choice of director, script, etc. but we discuss those all ad nauseam. Most like to tell them what they should do from a creative standpoint. Heck, look at the Rogue thread.

I usually hear the, "its none of our business" and "we aren't the studio" when a film isn't locked for a billion. Otherwise, it is a celebration.

Well yes get your priorities in order by all means. I would advise eating, sleeping and taking a dump prior to box office worries.
