Dexter - Part 5

It's not the fact that I don't know where it's going, it's the fact that it doesn't feel like it's actually building to an ending. I assumed the Hannah/Argentina thing was a red herring because there's no way Dexter would get off scot-free and have a happy ending like that; that just feels wrong for the show somehow. Plus, stuff is just sort of happening, the way it usually does on this show. I mean, if you look at Breaking Bad, which is also wrapping up, huge things are happening every episode and there's a sense that all the ongoing threads are being tied off. I don't get that same feeling from Dexter, even though it's actually closer to its ultimate ending than BB is.

I have a pretty good sense of it building and where it's building up to. There are a few possible options but none seems to be more or less likely than the others.

I imagine people are getting fed up by the Breaking Bad comparison but it works so well that I don't care.

I pretty much binge watched Breaking Bad for my first ever viewing of it and it took me a helluva long time to get into it (I'm talking Season 4) but the current episodes are so gripping.

On the whole I like Dexter more (I have rewatched seasons 1-6 many a time) but I'm actually getting bored in the current episodes. Even in BB more mundane points are still revealed in interesting ways and the scenes aren't dull. In Dexter we have to watch it while two people are eating salad or Dexter is stroking Hannah's hair.

Oh, Breaking Bad completely blows Dexter out of the water for me. It's no contest at all. I actually hesitated about making the BB comparison in my post up there because it's kind of like apples and oranges to me, BB is so much better.

With three episodes left what are the major things that need to be resolved? How will Dexter deal with the Brain Surgeon and to an extent Vogel. And I guess whether Dexter/Hannah get their happy ending. Don't think I'm missing anything else unless people care(relatively) if Quinn/Deb happen again.

Exactly. I don't know what they have left that requires 2 hours and 30 minutes of programming. It could probably all be wrapped up in the next episode if they wanted.

Yet again with the BB comparison, if the next episode was the series finale it would be very very very rushed because they have so much to cram in. I have the feeling with Dex that they could wrap it up next week and have room to spare for more Masuka.

I kind of thought we'd get more with the Deb/Dexter dynamic. She was a mess at first but now she basically just seems resigned to the idea that Dexter will basically always screw up her life and she's somehow okay with it. I feel like they undercut Deb immensely with that, since she basically can't have her own life, she's just bowing to Dexter's incredibly selfish idea that he needs her, even though it's to her own detriment. So the Deb front as a whole is kind of unsatisfying at this point, and it sounds like it won't improve.

Dexter has some balls asking her to house a wanted criminal, a person she absolutely hates. The fact that she gave in so easily and is having a dinner with her later is seems wrong.

Yeah with Deb it has got to the point where she may as well look at the camera shrug her shoulders and say "Oh that Dexter!"

Not a single piece of this makes him suspicious but when you put them all together you'd think someone would start to wonder about all these strange coincedences of people dying, disappearing or being homicidal. He's a magnet for it. LaGuerta started to get suspicious after she found that bit of evidence and all she had to do was some digging to find all those plainly obvious clues that make the picture clear... then Deb goes and shoots her.

Yeah, but you're really looking at it as the omnipotent viewer that we are. Within the confines of the show, a lot of these pieces are shattered and/or invisible., and it's not as if Dexter is particularly close to any of these people, so it's not like they are always in his life. I really don't think it's as obvious within the confines of the show.

I don't think it's weird that no one picks up on Dexter's constant lies and weird interactions with people. I did, however, nearly facepalm when he immediately implied that he and Hannah's friend were together to throw the marshal's suspicion off of her.

Also, your avatar is both hypnotic and disturbing.

Yeah, there are occasions like that I agree. Like when Masters was questioning him about why he never told anyone about Doakes at the dock, and he was like, "Sorry, I forgot." I mean, it's easy to write that off as just kind of weird, I guess.

Also, your avatar is both hypnotic and disturbing.

Disturbing? What disturbs you so?

I think the ending will be cheezy and have dexter and Hannah running off together to argentina

Haha I love this topic. I can't believe how the quality of the show dropped so much. Like I said, I live in Argentina, so I'll pay a visit to Dexter to tell him how bad this season was.

This review nails everything that's wrong with the last few seasons of Dexter-http://www.avclub.com/articles/make-your-own-kind-of-music,101569/

Basically, they're treating him like a Vigilante Superhero, instead of a messed up, ****ed in the head freak.

That's a great review, thanks for posting.

Messed up Freak?? Jeez, he evolved, get over it. He will probably never be fully "human", but he progressed with each season.

I think this Season is not perfect in any way, nor on the level of S1 & S4, but my God do fans B****ch and complain A LOT!!!! I think no matter what ending they would choose for it, it's still gonna get a lot of complains. :whatever:
It's impossible to please everyone anyway...

And yes, I was expecting during the sneak peek for him to ask Debra "Deb, I want you to come with me!" but why the heck would he take her with him and have her be a fugitive and live with him & Hannah on some cr****py farm?

I haven't seen this Writer's Room episode that's referenced in the review, but honestly, I've never gotten the impression from this show that Dexter is some kind of hero. They've always done a good job of casting doubt on what his role actually is from the very beginning. And we're seeing his role of a killer wash away slowly but surely, so if anything I would think that dilutes this whole idea of him being some kind of good vigilante. I honestly don't understand that critique in the least.

Nah, nah, the quality of the show has dropped significantly, you can't deny that. All the complaints are valid. And the (few) strong points of the season too.

It dropped, but it still didn't became bad.

Someone has to look after Harrison, right? It's not like Dexter has done much of that... :p

Another gripe. Right or Wrong, previous season Deb would not have taken that much sh** talk from Elway. If this season gives me anything. Please let it be that Deb goes off on Elway with one of her famous cursefests!
