Superman Returns Did Lex's plan make sense to anyone?

Come one people, NONE of your so called explanations make any sense. Defending this plot only put you in the same mental category as the writers and director of this movie,...an idiot (in case you couldn't figure it out). It just proves that YOU too are an idiot.

I would take the time to argue the many reasons why this plot is a joke but frankly it's so over the top obsurd that it would be a waste of time. If you don't see that already I don't think logic would help.

I got his plan, and thought it was a great "comic book villain" plan...

His plan was in a grand scale, like in many comic books stories I read in the past.

Majority of moviegoers won't question the validity of Lex's plot to take over the world because they are too focused on rest of the movie to notice but if you ask them about it afterward I am sure very few of them can explain it. That's just the way it is for movies these days... not many things make sense if you are trying to make sense of it.

What it boils down to me is a number of factors....

1. Lex Luthor is a nutter.

2. What Kryptonian technology can do DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SPELLED OUT.

3. Lex Luthors plan was abbreviated and I think everyone can understand its not going to be just a real estate scheme.

Frankly, the people that have trouble grasping the logic a man would want to murder billions because he believes it'll make him a god have a very thin grasp on psychosis.

Why not make LexCorp, use the technollogy to help people, making people doubt Superman`s actions? ... Why not make a company, sell the technollogy to people, instead of being the ALL evil LEx.

I suppose from the writers' point of view - "been there done that. But grow land and squeeze out America, killing billions in the event? Now, that's a story!"

Meh...it was the rehash plot amped up with Kryptonian technology. It doesn't exactly make sense, but I'm willing to buy it. Luthor is crazy, so he doesn't always think rationally and he's obviously not thinking like a sane man would.

If he wanted high-value land, he should have brewed up some Kryptonian weapons and taken down Metropolis

If he wanted something to protect him from Superman, make A KRYPTONITE BUILDING that he can't do anything about--and some KRYPTONITE weapons.

Does he have terraforming technology from Krypton? Because he'd need it if he planned on people moving to New Krypton---unless he has magic "food-growing" crystals.

I want to make money by selling land---oh, I know, let's kill a lot of people and thus reduce the absolute monetary value of said land. GREAT IDEA!!!!

Sorry, but this plot point is a big, gaping hole in the story. Lex is supposed to be a genius, not some halfwit who does understand basics.

lol. exactly. i dont get how no one is mentioning this MASSIVE FLAW in the film. yeah luthors plot was ridiculous but i can overlook that as its a typical supervillain world domination scheme. really illogical and stupid but thats supervillians for u.

HE CARRIED A KRYPTONITE ISLAND INTO SPACE!!!. yet he cant stand on this same island without losing all power as evidence by lex kicking the crap out of him.

Yes. Seriously, leave your brain at the door when you watch it, 'kay? I thought it was badass. His plan sounds funny when you think about it, but no need to go analyse the crap and think of every single logical reasons as to why it sucked. Just enjoy it for what it is.

Lex wanted to take over the world. Good. Got it. Military? He could just threaten to drop more crystals into the water to avoid military coming for him. Food? Eat fish. Water? It rains there at the NK. And there were freakin' waterfalls!

I thought its was pretty obvious that yes while on the island's surface the exposed kryptonite did weaken him BUT when he was lifting the island in to space after charging up, the many tones of bedrock he carved around the island was protecting him until of course those jagged pieces had grown through. As for the waterfalls that was simply because the island was not created perfectly flat. As it grew from the ocean the many canyons in it simply carried up an insane amount of water that was now flowing over the edges of the island. Pretty damn obvious.

You make it sound like it was a giant chuck of solid Kryptonite. If you notice, he went far underneath before he lifted the island up. there was tons of rock underneat the actual Kryptonite of the island. It's not until he's reached outer space that the rock underneath begins crumbling away, and the Kryptonite near the top reaches him, which is when he lets go and falls back to earth. I see no problems there.

As for Lex's plan, yeah it was a bit silly, but I can overlook it, just as I overlook Ra's al Ghuls water vaporizer not killing everyone, and yet it's still my favorite movie ever. (and even if it is a focused beam as people claim, we see Ra's or his henchmen standing around all sides of it at some point or another, one of them would be caught in the beam and have their leg evaporated.)

The GOOD comicbook movies showcase fantastical crap and are eminently "escapist".
But this one just didn't make any sense whatsoever!

Also about the state of the island what makes you think, if Lex had won, that he would leave it that way. He still had the controlling crystals to further change and manipulate the environment to his liking plus, this was just stage one of his plan.

I think the real problem with Lex's plan was that it could've made sense, we just weren't shown anything to prove that. For all we know he had a plan to grow food on his island (according to him, the crystal grows more than land, but just about everything). And even if he did kill just about everyone in America, I think he was more interested in selling the land to the rest of the world, where they'll have access to the alien technology (i'd like to have seen some of that, maybe an action scene of Lex vs. the U.S. Army?) However, it ended up with Lex growing this land, then sitting around with his goons while they played poker.

The people who made the movie were being stupid.

In service to the story, they HAD to establish that he had a way to 1) Benefit from his creation of the new land mass, and 2) Defend himself from retaliation.

Just saying, "NAW, I got alien tech!" Was not enough.

Sure it was, we saw him create a continent with it I'm sure it wasn't beyond the crystal's function to created weaponry. We saw the creation of it cause what was probably an EM pulse so it could definitely generate that and more.
