This is hardly the first MAGA-guys-harassed-me-racially story that's been pulled out of people's asses. The swastika on the dorm doors - made up. The woman on the train, fabrication.
Hate crimes happen. Totally. Laying criticism over this on anyone other than Jussie is foaming-at-the-mouth partisan bull**** though. If hate crimes are as big a problem as you want them to be, you don't need to go around faking them. The Trumpies aren't creating a narrative over this, it's just that your narrative's got another example of its problems.
I'm looking at this from my perspective living abroad, so we may have a different take on it. I actually agree with a lot of what you're saying.
Initially, this story got no attention at all in my country... I'm sure this was pretty big from the start in America, a black gay actor beaten up by Trump supporters, it's perfect for the left...
Only when the "twist" happened it became a big news story, especially for the right. (Over here in Europe) Nobody really cared before that, but now it seems this case in particular is being used as "proof" to counter every other alleged racist incident
