World News
This makes me so upset and angry that he did this and I take it personally because me and a few of my neighbors on my floor were the targets of a hate crime not once but twice in November and December of last year.

I woke up to the word "F*G" sprayed painted on my door twice, my neighbor had the N-word spray painted on his door twice, a woman on my floor had the word "sl**" and "wh***" on hers as well as derogatory terms for Hispanic/Latinos on another neighbors door. Not to mention swastika's painted up and down the hall the first time it happened. This happened not once, but twice. Reported to the local police and FBI.

Luckily I have a close friends who's a local news reporter here that covered my story but now after this crap I'm scared for it to even go live. I don't want to deal with being called a liar and second guessed. SO FRUSTRATING HE DID THIS!

He's a piece of ****. And this does give a bunch of racist the little bit of life blood they live on. But if we are being honest, those that believe real victims in the first place will still do so. They understand the statistics. They understand how rare this is. And those who have no intention of believing victims, well this wouldn't have changed it either way.

Of course racial tension was here before Trump, no sane person has suggested otherwise. There has never been a time in this country without racial tension. But yes whoever scoffed at you suggesting that Obama "did plenty to add to the climate of racial tension" was right to do so. Name these "plenty of things that" he did. We can obviously do that with Trump.
You are never going to get a reasonable answer from this crowd in regards to how Obama through actions or rhetoric stoked racial tensions.

They don't have anything concrete to point to. These are the same people that thought a fist bump between husband and wife was a secret terrorist hand signal.

It legitimately seems to be the idea that he acknowledged he was black and by him being black, that forced them to confront what this country has done to black people for it's entire existence. That he would sympathize with black victims on a different level was somehow wrong. It is okay to talk about how you grew up, your feelings as a parent, when you are a white President. But that Obama apparently had the audacity to speak from the perspective of a black man, as a black father was somehow beyond the pale. Reminding people black folk exist was just too much.

Horrible to hear, I would however recommend if anything ever comes of it again to just do what you did before.

I like to think the majority of people will always look at the evidence and come to their own logic based conclusions. This one just got so divisive because from the get go Smollett's story was fishy and pretty much anyone willing to say that was either marked as alt-right, a Trumper or flat out a racist and pretty much all people are going to push pretty hard against that last one if you try and brand them that.

This. It's like the people who post the false accusations in the Sexual Harassment thread. They'll always find the false stories because they don't believe the real ones anyways.

I hope this was worth it for Smollett if he really did fake a hate crime for the publicity because the damage it has caused otherwise is definitely not worth it.

Edit: News reporting is apparently he did pay them.

Investigators believe Smollett staged the attack, in part, "because he was dissatisfied with his salary," Johnson said. Police have the check he used to pay the men, the chief said.

The attack did take place, but was staged, Johnson said. The two paid assailants punched him a little, wearing gloves, according to Johnson.

"As far as we can tell, the scratching and bruising that you saw on his face were most likely self-inflicted," he said

I think this is why he said one of the brothers is his personal trainer. To try and explain the check and phone calls.

I feel bad for Mr. Smollett. Obviously, inciting even more racial animosity in these dark times is an awful thing to do. But he appears to be dealing with some pretty serious mental health issues. I hope he gets treatment as opposed to prison time.

And I think it is always a good idea when hearing of awful events to express sympathy for the victim(s) and then have a cooling off period before going any further.

You know how the people on this site operate. Real stories of racism that happen every day aren't news. It's better to defend Trump supporters so they can look like the rational ones.

:pal: And what exactly are you attempting to get at here?

The coast guard guy is news. The Smollet thing's also news. Real racist attacks happen, nobody on the other side of this has denied that, unless you can point to specific examples. Thing is, the Smollet case wasn't an example of racism, at least you couldn't glean it of anyone involved except maybe him.

But yeah, all in all, the fake-Trump-supporters he concocted here are a good deal more rational than the guy that concocted a story about 'em to...get a pay raise.

You're literally doing exactly the mirror image of what you're accusing here, but of course that's not something you're capable of grasping. Total Kool-Aid moment.

Again: This. Isn't. The. First. Example. Of. A. Concoted. "MAGA guys racially accosted me!". Story.

The woman on the train, the college kids with the "Trumpies painting swastikas on my dorm door!". There are probably others.

Things like this are narrative ammunition for the Trumpies, no doubt. They should be. There's an easy way to deny their counter-argument, just stop fabricating attacks. Willing to bet for every real confirmable attack by these red-hats since the campaign cycle, there's an example of it on red-hats from the Anifa people. Of which ****, I'm sure the red-hats have made up examples of those too, they're probably out there. Symptom of the entire country losing their minds, staking out opposing camps and declaring all-out "anything goes!" war on anyone who disagrees with them. Reap what you sow.

The "he faked the attack for a pay raise" may be the narrative they're going with, but it seems super flimsy. Say the attack was real...how would that automatically equal getting a higher salary? If that was really the reason the dude is mentally ill. If it wasn't the reason, sounds like his legal team is going to factor mental illness into his defense.

Well, either way, the dude clearly has mental issues. Writing a comically bad note with crushed up pills, and orchestrating a hoax hate crime isn't really something a sane person would do.

I don't know what is going through his head. None of the explanations sound reasonable or coherent.

No talk about the self avowed white nationalist that was caught in the midst of planning a murder spree around here huh?

Are you kidding? There is a website called The Coast Guard and when I did my own google search, some of the stories on the second page weren't even in reference to the US Coast Guard.

If you type in US coast guard arrest, the results are different.

Do better.

Thanks for correcting me to the higher number.

It wouldn't automatically do it. But if he were able to elevate his public persona and gather a lot of support, it's possible that he could use that in contract negotiations for better pay. Or at least, that was the thinking. Not smart.... but rational enough in a crazy sort of way I think.

The reasoning doesn't make a great deal of sense to me either, but this is coming straight from the Chicago police commissioner, direct from his mouth in the conference. He wouldn't take his statement as far as n actual motive unless they'd found something supporting that as the reason, could be the Nigerian guys testified that's what Smollett had told them during the planning.

Keep in mind, this is a guy who decided to fake a racial attack. A guy who thought little enough of the police that they wouldn't figure it out. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed, nor someone who thinks things through. For someone like that, fabricating a situation in which you come off as a victim in order for mass exposure in order to be able to command better leverage in contract negotiations isn't out of the question. Of course the plan's insane, it's coming from someone who thought he'd get away with this. That's not a smart cookie.
