Salon - James Patterson laments white male writers are facing racism

Per a 2020 New York Times op-ed, 89% of books were written by white writers while a 11% were written by authors of color. And within the film industry, a 2022 Hollywood Diversity Reportconducted by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) found that white, male directors continue to be an overwhelming majority throughout the years — in 2019, 85.6% of directors were white while 84.9% were male.

"Amending my previous quote to 'when you're accustomed to insane privilege, even slightly less insane privilege apparently feels like oppression. (It's still not.)," wrote American film executive Franklin Leonard.

I feel like people have to be shown what the demographics of the US, UK, and world look like. White men aren’t being discriminated against, rather the discrimination against others is in some cases (like entertainment) easing slightly as their proportion of the population (and money $) goes up and the white male (28% of US population) goes down. Easing discrimination or easing racism isn’t racist, but that’s not comfort to those who benefited from privilege.

I like how USA Today debunked him.
The numbers say otherwise. While there's little in the way of definitive industry-wide data, recent reports and publishing industry audits show the landscape is overwhelmingly white.

Major publisher Penguin Random House conducted a 2019-2021 diversity self-audit and found that 74.9% of its contributors in that period were white; only 6% were Black, while 5% were Hispanic or Latinx. The publisher's employees also skewed heavily white, making up 74.2% of its workforce.
That wealth comes from the more than 300 books Patterson has to his name. If that sounds like too many for any one person to write, that's because it is: Patterson is as much a brand manager as author, and many of his titles are developed with lesser-billed co-writers – he even teaches a MasterClass in co-writing.

"James Patterson of all people. First of all, write your own books, pal," author Roxane Gay tweeted.

Any minority group gets a foot in the door in a space generally dominanted by white dudes and suddenly they start whining about how they are now being oppressed. Opportunities being more widely available than they previously have been is a good thing.

Patterson isn't doing much to shake that fragile tag that gets thrown at men that say this kind of stuff

They support the Confederate monuments and what they represent not black liberation.

Didn't they already try this with "involuntary immigration"?

We can't call slavery what it is, literally, because that would be bad for the children to know the awful history of the U.S.

I see Patriot Front marched in Boston. With protection from the police.

Its a minor miracle those in Idaho got arrested.
