I agree FOX nailed Magneto and I liked Stryker. But, who else have they nailed villain wise? Most of their other villains are no more complex than what Marvel gives us. I don't see this notion of FOX does villains so much better than Marvel as actually being true.
But what I do see is Marvel's track record of Good vs Bad films is better than FOX's. X-Men have several good films, this is true. But, they also have many other examples of trash outside it, and even trash within the X-Men series.
I mean that is fair. But I suppose for me a big thing is the villains have an actual menace, even when they are as disposable as Marvel's. William Stryker's hate was tangible in X2. Before he got admittedly run into the ground by prequels, he just represented the contemptuous privilege and entitlement of establishment that leads to scapegoating. The Sentinels in DOFP, while lacking in any personality, were far more threatening and terrifying than Ultron and his army of bots. Ultron was cracking jokes, the Sentinels slaughtered X-Men and the movie made the audience feel it. There is a look of real terror in Xavier and Kitty's pride at the end, while the Avengers are trading barbs with Ultron. He is even whistling a Disney song after killing Quicksilver.
It is just the difference in presentation. But they are more comparable, you are right. I still, however, doubt Marvel would do Magneto as poignantly as the X-films had done. And it is why I also am doubtful that Doom will be everything fans are hoping, but he will definitely be better than either Fox version too.
