Oh I ****ing loathe it. Even typing words about how much I hate it makes me feel like a dirty pirate hooker. Ugh.

Do pirate hookers have peg legs, eye-patches and hook hands?

NCIS is not a granny-oriented show. You quote Matlock and Murder She Wrote, but it's nothing like those at all, apart from the murder aspect. However, if you are going to equate a murder element with those shows, then you might as well say that all police procedurals are much the same as them as well.

NCIS has the naval and governmental agency element, so it appeals to fans of those types of shows. Then it has the police procedural/ forensic aspect, appealing to fans of shows like CSI.

And if you're going to quote Murder She Wrote, well then you can't ignore a show like Castle whose premise is very similar to that show, about a writer who solves murders for the police. However, that is highly popular and definitely not a granny-oriented audience that it's catering to. So it's not largely an older crowd for whom these types of shows hold their appeal.

And like I said, NCIS spun off from JAG. That was definitely not a granny show with it's completely naval/ military/ legal theme.
LOL, you're literally naming the favorite shows of both my grandmothers right now.

But they don't represent the entire population. If both of them get into SHIELD, does it make that a granny show?

so if it gets picked up, what night will it be on? The main networks treat saturday like a "dead zone", and Fridays aren't much better..

I think Thursday is it's best shot, even though it may go up against Big Bang Theory. It would seem to have some discriminators against a show like BBT since SHIELD will be an hour long drama as opposed to a half hour comedy. I hear people saying that the demographics are largely the same for this show but I don't really see that. Sure, there is a certain segment of comic fans that watch the BBT, but I think by and large it is mostly people who enjoy sitcoms. If given the choice, I think the comic fans would rather watch the show that is actually based on a comic rather that a show that references them.

Depends how nerdy they are. It's like those who would rather talk about a girl than actually talk to one in real life.

Kaley Cuoco really needs a new show focused around her, because she would be the only reason for tuning in to TBBT. Once you take her out of it, there's no reason at all.

God knows that, given the choice between watching TBBT or SHIELD, I and everyone else I know who's a comic geek would choose SHIELD in less than a heartbeat.

Of course they don't. No one represents the entire population. But, for the record, they wouldn't get into SHIELD, either, because it's a genre show. They're not into sci-fi or action-adventure type of stuff, which is why they watch the shows that they do. Point is, NCIS, Castle, The Mentalist, JAG, etc. all fall into a certain "granny-friendly" kind of category. They don't involve genre material (which most women of that generation don't seem to care for), they don't get too "dark," gritty or real with the nature of their subject matter to the point of offending anyone's sensibilities, and they also don't require their strict attention every week to be able to follow or enjoy. Therefore, they're perfect for the geriatric crowd. Mark Harmon's appeal to older ladies helps too. :cwink:

I'm not saying those shows only appeal to the grannies, I'm just saying older folks seem to watch those shows more than the other shows on TV, hence CBS skewing older in the demos, since their schedule is chock-full of that stuff.

Well that IS pretty much the CW's target demo, you know. :oldrazz:

AGAIN, I'm not the one who called those "granny programs," but there is some truth in the notion that they appeal to a certain demo more than other shows do. That does not mean they only appeal to that demo. But we can do this with all types of shows:

NCIS - older folks
Supernatural - teens and geeks
The Carrie Diaries - teenage girls
General Hospital - soccer moms
Two and a Half Men - Joe the Plumber
The Walking Dead - geeks
Young Justice - kids
Dexter - adult men (pre-middle-aged)

With NONE of those shows does that mean that's all who watches (we all know plenty of grown-up geeks watched Young Justice and I, a 27-year-old woman, watch Dexter religiously), but there are primary demos for every type of show. I don't understand why people are in denial about this. SHIELD's primary demo will be geeks, but it should have a pretty decent crossover ratio thanks to the Avengers and all demos that movie reached.

Pretty much what flickchick said in her last two posts. Those happy crime shows appeal to older folks, by design. Low impact TV watchers. There aren't a lot of teenagers and young men who are into NCIS and the like. That's also why they have handsome male leads out in front, with not much fanservice going for girl-lovers. The overlap for NCIS and SHIELD is relatively small. Smaller than the overlap with TBBT. Everyone who likes geeky stuff that doesn't feel like TBBT is misrepresenting them enjoys both, and that's a gaggle of people nowadays, to the tune of Avengers' 1 Billion or Walking Dead's whatever many millions of viewers an episode. SHIELD might do well though coming on after TBBT goes off.

so if it gets picked up, what night will it be on? The main networks treat saturday like a "dead zone", and Fridays aren't much better..

When I took broadcasting courses in college I learned what TV programmers used to call the people available to watch TV on Friday and Saturday nights. They called those folks waste demographics, by which they mean people too old or too young to have lives, so they have nothing better to do on the two date nights of the week. The term "waste" is used because programming for that audience is considered a waste of network resources.

People in the waste demo aren't prime consumers, so the networks don't put much effort into attracting them or satisfying their needs. Kids don't have much disposable income of their own and older people aren't great consumers of major household goods, cars, groceries, etc. because their families are (presumably) grown and gone. That is why those two nights don't have great shows scheduled on them. In fact, any show relegated to a Friday or Saturday night slot is either expected to fail or the network has given up and abandoned it.

I am so confused right now XD

haha but on a side note, supernatural is good! So..good dad, gooood haha

I like Supernatural. It's a bit cheap at times, would be great if it had a bigger budget but it's still pretty fun.

Except Grimm, Nikita, Blue Bloods and CSI: NY, those shows do reasonably well for Friday shows. Though I think CSI: NY might be going off soon.

I haven't heard anything about a renewal yet. Was it on Fridays? Of course, i thought it might get axed last year instead of CSI Miami. Was surprised with the decision.

Yeah, that surprised me too. Miami was definitely the more loved of the two. And I haven't heard anything too but I'm just speculating based off of what happened to Miami and the fact that this season was only 17 episodes and ended earlier than every other program.

I read that Miami was more expensive to produce, hence why they chose that one to axe. But NY has been on the bubble for the past 3 seasons whereby they keep making provisional "final episodes" that could wrap up the series.

I'm kind of sad Miami had gone. It could've still continued.

For Fridays, sure...I guess. Nikita does so poorly in the ratings it is ALWAYS on the bubble, though.

Yeah they said they had to choose between the two and NY stayed because it fit into the NYC block on Fridays. Sucks.

I think if you're expecting S.H.I.E.L.D. to be primarily action/comics based you're going to end up seriously disappointed. As far as I'm aware it's going to be more procedural "case of the week" type show and not focused on blowing things up.

I also take offense at people stating procedural and sitcoms only appeal to grannies. Most people I know who watch those shows are in their 20s-30s.

Also, for the record, I typically HATE sitcoms but I do like TBBT, it's not a show I go out of my way to watch every week but I do find it fun.

Truthfully I think Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be more like Chuck than procedural dramas like NCIS, Castle, Mentalist etc.
