Basically you can be ugly as **** in non-Hollywood film and tv and be a leading man. Gotta address the elephant in the room. :o

Think a lot of American actors struggle, because at a young age they are only considered for parts based on looks. Then they are taught the always smile, perfect hair, perfect looks etc...
This means that a lot of actors with character are missed out on. Or only get roles when they are a bit older.
British tv (i think) is probably more grounded in realism. A lot of people are ugly or fat or have a big nose. If we are watching a tv show about a hospital we don't expect to see a movie star in ER, we expect someone who looks like total crap, that has just had a seriously bad day. These actors (if they are good enough) can then go on to do movies etc... Would Timothy Spall really have got a chance on American TV? Ray Winston, Tim Roth?

Your opinion sir. I'm also not saying that Cruise should be Strange but that he's a good actor too. Crusie was just an example but I could see him playing Starnge as well. In fact i've said it but he's certainly not my first choice and neither is the overhyped Cumberbatch. I don't see where he's done anything so awesome and great the way people on these boards carry on about him. I've seen a few films and he's a good actor but certainly no better then other talented actors out there. I'm just glad he won't be getting the part. If for no other reason then to shut the fanboys up that is riding his DI(K

Have you watched Sherlock?

Please tell me how handsome likes of Mark Ruffalo are?

Also the amount of girls I have seen gushing over Cumberbatch are far more than any of the actors on that list, not that it should be the basis of a casting decision

You could have a face like the ass end of a wild boar but with that voice? Nobody would care.

wait. is somebody implying Cumberbatch is ugly? the thousands of Cumber*****es worldwide probably won't agree, myself included

My sister and I think Cumberbatch is sexy and would like to see him in lead roles. I'm not saying everyone loves him but a lot of women do and he is wildly talented. He could easily be a leading man, certainly more than traditionally handsome guys like Taylor Kitsch and Ryan Reynolds.

not only women

I have actually and as I've said he's a good actor but to me he's no better then any other talented actor out there. I'm not talking movie star pretty boys or sex symbols like Channing Tatum, Chris Hemsworth or Chris Pine or Evans. These are good looking guys and while they have acting chops they aren't on actor's like Chiwetel Ejiofor, Leo D, Phoenix, Michael Fassbender, and Cumberbatch's level talent wise. Even with this being said Cumberbatch is not the best game changing actor out there. He's popular with the fanboys because he more anti movie star. He has a cool name and he's British and have delivered good performances. I'm sorry to those who love him but he isn't a great actor who just blows you away with his performances. His American accent is passable and I just don't see all the hype with this guy. As I've said before I rather they went with someone else for Strange bit I wouldn't be upset if Cumberbatch was cast.

I don't know if you're saying that Cumberbatch is ugly but I don't think he is. He's not the typical Hollywood movie star that Hollywood deems good looking and cast them in everything based off looks first then talent second but the man is talented and while i don't think Hollywood would ever consider him a leading man to helm blockbusters I think he'd do fine and on occasion he'd get the lead in films when he's been around for a while and everyone knows that he a dependable actor that's goona give a good performance.

I see Cumberbatch as more of a Anthony Hopkins. Good actor that's ben around a while, never considered movie star material, passable looks, always gives a solid performance, has been supporting actor and on occasion is the leading man due to his longevity and talent.

He's not an ugly dude per se, he has a very unique look, for lack of a better term. A female version of him would get laid into big time since they're more prone to have to deal with being hot over talent.

Agreed. I think society allows men to have a wider variety of physical appearances and still be considered "hot", and how a man's physical appearance is perceived is much more heavily affected by things like their voice, their talent, how they carry themselves, etc. In short, men are allowed to be human beings, to a much larger extent?

Compare Benedict Cumberbatch, who is objectively really strange looking, but is still considered a fairly massive cult sex symbol, with Maggie Gyllenhaal, whose name cannot be mentioned in a Batman/Dark Knight thread without fanboys (who, I promise are not more attractive than her) ragging nonstop over how unfathomably "fugly" she is. Like, internet dudes literally getting angry at her for not matching up closely enough with their concept of what a "hot" woman looks like.

I would be as happy with Fassbender as I will be with Cumberbatch, infact Fassbender suits the character better, but he is Magneto and that will probably stop Marvel
Cumberbatch might not be the most talented, but in that list and in that age range,he definitely is the most talented

But everybody has opinions..

Right, it's weird that a fictional character would have a different taste in women than you do. :wow:

She's a very good actress though. She does really well in Honourable woman. Well Americas loss our gain. She's good looking enough. i'd not be embarrassed taking her out for a meal.

I'm sure she's thrilled to hear that.

Shallowest discussion thread of all time. It's no wonder so many people have body image issues.

Maggie Gyllenhaal's physical appearance in a Doctor Strange thread? Okay...

I think she's beautiful and a fantastic actress. Hey! Maybe she should play Strange? ;)

Yes Suzanne, Maggie G for Doctor Strange!

I think everyone is entitled to their tastes. If you think an actor is ugly fine, that has nothing to do with my opinion. *shrugs*

Oh I agree 100 percent. Of the actors that's been mentioned I'd say him and Phoenix are the most impressive acting wise. Phoenix edges him out because he's american so his accent is obviously going to be perfect. Cumberbatch's accent is passable but I don't hold fault over a person who can't get the accent quite down pact. Never the less even with the passable accent he's miles ahead the rest of the mentioned lot, and that includes Oscar winner Jared Leto.

Well I certainly hope you are not one of those people who live in glass houses and like to throw stones. With that being said it's distasteful to belittle this woman who's done nothing to deserve any backlash. She is't ugly at all. Yes there are better looking actresses but as someone mention I wouldn't be ashamed to been seen with her on a date. To many here have such unrealistic concepts of beauty and like to pick beauty over talent, especially when it comes to actresses. Males have it better but looks plays a big part in Hollywood and the world. It's not fair but it's life.

Lets not sugar coat it... he's ugly.
