Wait, Evans as Cap is to be criticised now?

I'm in the American camp. Yes, I know what I just said. :o

I think he should have the American accent because you kinda expect magic and british accents to go by default, haha.

They should have him as English IMO. Every MCU lead has been a straight white American make (except Thor) so some diversity in that area would be nice

I kinda agree, I think Doctor Strange would still work really well being English instead of American. When I think of heroes who are English or British I usually picture those like Captain Britain, John Constantine, and even Merlin. Each are characters involved with magic or the supernatural in some way (Blade was even born in London in the comics! Not American like the Snipes films portrayed, not that I'm complaining he was great in the role). Thor: The Dark World had the Dark Elves invading Greenwich. I think England being a location or source of magical stuff makes perfect sense.

Never in my life would I have ever thought that Marvel could get someone like BC in the role as Doctor Strange, a movie and character I have looked forward to ever since Feige named him as a potential project years ago.

But I do agree that he is a rather conventional casting, but nonetheless he is a fantastic actor. Watching him out of character, he kinda looks like this unassuming English guy, but like Ian McKellen, he just flips the switch and bring authority to a role. He is perfect for Strange. Would've rather seen Phoenix, but still waaay down with BC over any other potential actor.

He is phenomenal as Sherlock (even though the show has sorta devolved from a brilliant mystery to a more tongue-in cheek meta show about BC playing Sherlock and the ways they can play with fangirl ideas) and I would give my left leg for Feige to allow Derrickson or the Russos or Whedon or Gunn in an Avengers film to have BC as Strange say, "I'm not a psychopath. I am a high functioning sociopath!" He was good as Khan, he was great in Tinker Tailor and the Fifth Estate. I have no doubt that he will kill it in the role.

Hopefully they won't play him up to be too much like Sherlock though. BC is a really versatile actor and I would hope they give him the necessary gravitas that Strange has and requires instead of sort of making him some lovable jerk figure that can act as a RDJ stand-in for when RDJ inevitably departs the series.

I'm interested in who could be cast as Wong though. I feel like they'll really bring him up to be at the level of Pepper/Alfred in terms of importance. My fanboy mind wants Tony Leung, but he would never play the role of a manservant or sidekick in anyway. Still, it'll be nice to have more Asians in the MCU.

Meh, Cucumber is alright I guess. He has to keep the accent. Can you imagine all those HP spells in American accent plus that is the best thing about him.

Charles Xavier is technically American but Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy play him British. Probably not a big deal at all as long as they're well-acted.

I know what Keanu did with Constantine and people *****ed about that for years, but I guess this'll get a pass since the vocals are like his trademark.

I have never been impressed in anything I've seen him in. This is an even safer and boring choice than Chris Evans as Cap. The only silver lining here is WE CAN FINALLY GET A F***ING DOCTOR STRANGE FORUM

They drew the casting out for way too long

But Cumberbatch is perfect so that's great news!

To be honest, I'm English and I'd hate for them to do that. I'm a bit of a purist and I want the actors to both look and sound as much like the characters (who I've read for years) that they are portraying.

How is he meant to sound like a comic book character?

I think from the books and from animated movies and shows he just has a very pompous way of talking. Like he was raised in a big ass mansion on the east coast in some forest.

Anyway. Think he'll do really well. Thought he was great as Smaug, although a lot of the credit has to go to the makeup artist. He looked like a real dragon. (at least the one's I've seen).

Ha.

Cumberbatch does a American accent in August: Osage County.

Think a lot of American actors struggle, because at a young age they are only considered for parts based on looks. Then they are taught the always smile, perfect hair, perfect looks etc...
This means that a lot of actors with character are missed out on. Or only get roles when they are a bit older.
British tv (i think) is probably more grounded in realism. A lot of people are ugly or fat or have a big nose. If we are watching a tv show about a hospital we don't expect to see a movie star in ER, we expect someone who looks like total crap, that has just had a seriously bad day. These actors (if they are good enough) can then go on to do movies etc... Would Timothy Spall really have got a chance on American TV? Ray Winston, Tim Roth?
Tim Roth had a show on American TV and there are a large number of British actors currently starring in American shows right now. Timothy Spall rarely gets leading man roles in Britain so he isn't really a good example.
Don't get me wrong, I've seen him interviewed and he's a pretty funny guy, not up his own ass or holier than thou. ****, he just did a dance to a Beyonce jam the other night. Before he always kinda came off as one of those "I'm totally method and devoid of humor" guys, but he's doing a goddamn Penguins of Madagascar movie so I took it back. :oldrazz:
He has always been a bit of a geeky oddball from what I have seen.

I don't think they said Charles Xavier isn't American born in the films. The Xavier mansion is still located in upstate New York in the films.

Strange, Stark and Xavier are all cut from the same northeastern, blue-blood cloth. For some it's tempting to just make characters like that sound British(see Professor X in films) but IMO that's a mistake. There are plenty of other great characters who actually ARE from GB and have those accents. Diversity is more than just sex and skin color. At least that's how I see it.

Totally missed my point. He was already a well known actor because he had made it Britain years ago. He was in Made in Britain as a very young man and looked a lot worse than he does now. No Hollywood studio would have given him a part. But British tv/films are different. Same as Tim Spall and Ray Winston.

In America it is likely they wouldn't have ben given a chance based on looks.

Not unless you actually listen to the dialog in these films since in Thor1 Hogun clearly says Loki is a master of magic.

Yeah well and I now remember that comment but what Harry Potterish stuff has Loki done? No spells nothing. He makes copies of himself and looks like someone else?? Meh
