Yeah, I've heard VERY few people, be they critics or the GA, bash his PERFORMANCE in that movie. In fact, it is one of the most praised things about the film. I seen people complain about how the character was WRITTEN, but that's not his fault.

Yeah, I *hated* everything pretty much about the way STiD ended up, and had hoped that JJ and O/K reworked the Khan stuff when Benny CumbWhereNoDudeHasGoneBeforebatch came on board. Like, I pretty much loathed the Reverse Khan stuff at the end of the movie, but that's mostly my Trekkie in me talking.

I realize that I lay way too much of the blame on BC for the role, because I like him in everything else.

I'm just working on figuring out how this movie's going to develop from here on out ;)

Oh yeah and Riccardo Montalban was the epitome of subtlety in WOK. Oh please, he and Bill Shatner will having a "let's see who can ham it up the most" contest throughout that entire movie.

He should do well in the role

My only exposure to Cumberbatch, aside from endless fan drooling over how awesome he is, was in his terrible portrayal of Khan in a bad Star Trek movie.

My initial reaction to this is boredom. I guess all of his vocal internet fans will hype this as awesome news though, so they can have their moment. I haven't watched the projects they say he's great in, so I'm not in the best position to judge.

He certain has a lot of Geek cred. Marvel no doubt partially selected him for that reason

Never liked those either.

The article says he's about to start negotiations, so I don't see how that makes it official.

I like the casting
he has the gravitas to carry things for a little while if other actors *coughRDJcough* take a break during A3 or whatever.

and c'mon, Star Trek is always cheesy, and loves their scenery chewing villains.
In that respect Cumberbatch was pitch perfect.

ps. always amazed at how quick the trolls mobilize for any piece of news....

If Deadline and Hollywood Reporter are reporting, chances are it is close to a done deal. Anything could happen, but this looks fairly close.

Deadline also said Phoenix was close to signing, so anything could happen. Hopefully they come to their senses.

One other problem (besides fan letdown): I can't imagine BC dissapearing into a role at this point in his career. I mean, most of the other MCU cast members were at best mid-level stars before they got cast (or they underwent some change in appearance), but Benedict Cumberbatch has a hit TV show, had his face and/or voice in two of the biggest blockbuster franchises around, starred in multiple Oscar-buzzed films, and has been all over the internet for quite some time now (and he's probably going to pretty much keep his look for this). How are we supposed to see those cheekbones and that voice onscreen and think anything other than "Benedict Cumberbatch in a Doctor Strange costume, standing next to Tony Stark and Thor"?

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it'll be one screaming hell of a challenge.

Fan letdown for some fan massive over excitement for others, same with anyone else cast really.

I agree with you about maybe seeing him in the role, but that would have been the same for most others on the supposed short lists, they didn't seem to be looking at mid to lower end actors for this role.

RDJ Scarjo, Sam Jackson very famous when cast. Most of us here would have seen Evans before as Human Torch and Renner was nominated for an oscar, Cobie was on a hit tv show. Other lesser characters have been played by very famous actors. But they have all blended into their roles, well Renner hasn't really played Hawkeye yet and Sam jackson is Sam jackson . But still.

I think Cumberbatch is a much better choice than Phoenix. He's a good actor and perfect for Strange. If anyone has a problem with that, well...

I think Cumberbatch is an incredible actor but I never envisioned him as Doctor Strange, never thought the role suited him but I look forward to be proven wrong.

Well Phoenix is an odd guy. He turned down both Strange and Lex.

That is fair.

Personally if Cumberbatch doesn't "disappear" in the role, that's fine with me. RDJ doesn't disappear into Stark in the least.

That is a scene I now want to see so bad... Stark and Strange going at in a Science vs Magic debate.

I think who ever was casting this movie must have gave up and said "Eff it! We'll give that cumberbatch guy the role! At least he can bring in the female demographic!" and called it a day.

strange starts off as a cocky aloof smart guy... perfect for cumberbatch

All they have to do now is cast Mordo, Ancient One, Wong, Clea and Dormammu.
