Doctor Strange News & Speculation thread - Part 2

So not being that well versed in Dr Strange mythology in the comics are his powers simply 'magic' or does he manipulate the laws of physics? Coz the trailer seems to indicate the latter.

I haven't read a Dr. Strange comic in quite some time but from what I remember it was generally accepted as outright magic, although he did also bend the laws of physics as well. Both, but certainly more of the former.
I know a good deal of folks prefer the more mystical explanation, but I kind of like how Thor dealt with it.

The teaser looks nice. Hopefully we see more "colorful" magic at some point though. That's something I love about stranges books

China will love it as they love anything with Cumberbatch. They put the Sherlock Christmas special and Hamlet recordings on top at the box office. So if all else fails Marvel has that to fall back on like with Ant-Man.
Its biggest struggle will be going up against Fantastic Beasts, a certain other story involving a British sorcerer in America.

I never really thought about that. You're totally right! China and other Asian countries will eat this thing up. Definitely box office "backstop".

There is clearly a strong Inception vibe with this trailer. My one real complaint about that movie was that the action pieces should have gotten progressively crazier and more outlandish the further down the dream sequences went. This film might very well do what Inception didn't in taking things to the extreme in terms of bending the laws of nature.

This reminds me of The Shadow, except Cumberbatch's Strange seems like a decent chap compared to Baldwin's Cranston.

It's just a trailer and trailers can be made to look like a lot of different things, but yup I really did get the Nolan "Inception" vibe right away - which I'm completely fine with.

First thing my girlfriend said after I sent it to her. She's heard me talk about this movie for months now and that was her first comment. Superhero movies aren't her thing, but I think this caught her interest.

They somehow toned down Swinton and ripped off Inception.

But that poster is Marvel's best so far.

It's not a bad thing because Inception made a crap load of money.

Just saw this on Twitter: "Marvel's 'Dr. Strange' Movie Poster Ensures You'll Remember, Remember The 4th of November."

Hahahaha nice V for Vendetta reference, although that was the fifth right?

I hope they don't shy away from the magic and mysticism aspect, even if they go with the "quantum physics" aspect of it.

that is, they'll use the concept of "quantum physics" and bending reality as the scientific "basis" for magic or whatever.

To get it through Chinese sensors I think they'll have to tie it to fantasy science in some way like Thor, although I'd prefer just magic
Vaguely remember Feige mentioning the Thor way in an interview when the first Strange photoshoot came out

The bending of the laws of physics would in and off itself come across as being 'magic' to the average person in the same way technologies of today would seem like magic to someone from 200 years ago.

Chinese won't allow outright magic in their films?

They'll never say "magic," (outside of making a joke about it, I'm guessing) but that's what it is.

yeah.

but what I want to see is Strange actually tap into and control that power to alter quantum physics ( and thus perform "magic" and "sorcery" ).

I want that to come from his own innate ability and power, not rely on "technology" to control it.

I don't want to see him use an Infinity Stone or some kind of crystal/stone/whatever that's actually a piece of technology that allows him to control quantum physics.

does that make sense?

The fifth of November is bonfire night, the day celebrating Guy Fawkes failure to blow up parliament.

I don't know if that's true. But I think Doctor Strange is influenced by eastern occultism, maybe the Chinese are a bit sensitive to that being portrayed on film if they don't allow it.

Derived from eastern philosophies, that the west depicts as fantastical magic. I can see why it might be touchy.

I'm a little concerned that there's gonna be so much origin story that we won't get any sweet magic action til the last 20 minutes.
