Doctor Who - Not a Hugging Type of Thread - Part 19

Those series were alright when they weren't all "SEX! SWEARING! ADULT THEMES!!!!!"

I swear. Those first seasons were trying waaaay too hard to feel adult, and I think that's a big part or why it alienated so many Who fans.
At least it was the first few seasons and not the last few.

Though it is a surprise Moffat hung around this long it is time for someone with some new ideas and perspective to take the reins. I assume too that Capaldi will be leaving to give the show a fresh start.

Let's see...four years with Matt, and another three with Capaldi, that's seven. Did anyone else from the old series get to be showrunner for that long?

Jonathan Nathan Turner ran the show for 9 years.

Glad Moffat is going. I think this means Capaldi will be going as well.

I get the feeling they'll go the female Doctor route, and I'm not interested in that. Oh well. My passion for the show peaked with Tennant and Smith.

I think they will at least audition females as well. Doesn't mean they're 100% guaranteed that.

I'm wondering if Capaldi will have a transition companion this final series or a few temporary companions so Chibnall gets to pick his.

I don't think you're alone in feeling that. This show hasn't felt that exciting since the 50th anniversary celebrations.

Indeed. On the whole, I just haven't had the same emotional investment.

I think the next Doctor will definitely be female. They've been teasing it pretty heavily the past few years. Especially with things like Missy, and the Time Lord General regenerating into a woman.

I'm calling it right now: The Doctor regenerates into a woman. We get exactly one historical story, during which the Doctor gets fed up with nobody believing she's educated, and then we never get a story set before the late 20th century again.

--EDIT--

Alternatively: The Doctor is a woman and the new companion isn't white. All stories from now on will take place in the future.

Me too.

I have not watched Capaldi's episodes regularly. My interest in the show had deteriorated a bit. I feel like the show needs some fresh ideas.

I'd honestly prefer the show to be put on hold indefinitely. That's how I feel. If the show goes down a certain direction I just won't watch it anymore, which is a real shame. But best of luck to those that will continue doing so.

This is hilarious

Truer words have never been spoken

I haven't even seen part 2 of season 9 "The Witches Familiar"

There's a season 9 Blu-ray Part 1 at home that I'm just not eager or compelled to go and watch.

It's just not enthralling anymore. My interest peaked after Smith left.

After that it was a chore to watch these episodes cause I just wasn't into it anymore

I've been away from this thread for a while, but I do hate that we'll go all year with no new Doctor Who (besides the Christmas special).

I'm going to hate seeing Capaldi go, but it won't kill my interest in the show. I think he really grew into the role this season and made it great. Also, I always hated River Song, but I loved her in the Christmas special. She and Capaldi had incredible chemistry.

I think the thing we all learned from this past Christmas special is that Moffat should've gone with his first instinct and cast Capaldi as the Eleventh Doctor instead of Smith. Capaldi and Kingston were great together.

It's unfortunate that some of you didn't enjoy the last series. I thought it was firing on all cylinders. No stupid episodes like "Kill the Moon" or "In the Forest of the Night."

I thought Series 9 was much improved over Series 8. Even this Christmas Special was better than the last one. It's gonna be long wait.

I gotta go along with the last few posts... series 9 WAS a VAST improvement, and IF Capaldi IS on the way out, it's a cryin' shame, because he finally got around to making the role of the Doctor HIS, this last series... he grew into it quite nicely...

I think all of Moffat's series has great episodes and great characters. I just feel that, unlike Russell T. Davies during the Eccleston/Tennant era, they never had a good season long arc for the Doctor/Companion, as well as the villain for the season.

RTD always did a fantastic job of tying all that together, but Moffat just never was. Which sucks.

Also, Moffat never mastered subtlety with his series long mysteries. Either the mystery went unaddressed in an episode, or it was put right out in front of you.

It's pretty clear that after all of the stuff with the Silence and the Church was cleared up that Moffat pulled back and simplified his story arcs, and I'm glad. "Who is Clara?" Totally normal girl who did a thing with the TARDIS, it turns out. "What is Heaven?" The Matrix. "Who gave Clara the Doctor's number?" The Master because she was trying to be nice. "What is the hybrid?" [blackout]The Doctor obsessing over his companions[/blackout], basically.

I reckon they should stop and reboot, i hate to say it, but hear me out...

I think Dr Who should be an event, once a year, at xmas, to all sit down and watch a 2-3 part series and see quality, rather than quantity.

Wasn't "Sleep No More" a terrible episode?

I'm going to against the trend and disagree.

I think Capaldi made the role his the moment he appeared in his first episode. The gruff, emotionally detached (albeit angry) guy was fairly different to the usual zaniness that you get from all the other Doctors.

Each Doctor since it came back have been very similar to the point of not really being very different. The differences have been subtle IMO - but overall a bit of a template has formed.

I think Capaldi just reshaped his Doctor's personality to be aligned with the template, rather than necessarily making the role his, per se. I reckon people enjoy him more because it's more familiar than what he was doing in his first season.

Yep. I still have like 6 or so episodes left to go with Series 9 and can't muster the enthusiasm to watch them. Capaldi clearly went in another direction to the other modern Doctors, and I guess he shouldn't be grilled too harshly because of that. However...to me he lacks the energy and charisma that Eccleston, Tennant and Smith had. That wide eyed enthusiasm for adventuring.

I simply find the other guys more entertaining and rewatchable, and I found them as deep and layered as Capaldi was anyway. Especially with Smith. He was fun to watch but had that quiet, contemplative personality underneath, perfectly demonstrated in The Day of The Doctor when War asks if he counted how many children were burned on Gallifrey. Capaldi isn't awful by any means, but I just find him okay upon reflection. And Moffat didn't really help his cause either.

It's worth noting that Twelve went through a series-long character arc during series 8, which we really haven't seen since Nine.

Twelve was fresh out of another really long war, and he began that incarnation as a very gruff and abrasive man. Clara was constantly on him to be more sensitive to others and apologizing for the way he spoke to people. He had to ask Clara if he was a good man, and we were never told if he threw the robot out of the building in "Deep Breath." We were meant to doubt his Doctor. When Missy handed him that army of undead Cybermen, we were supposed to think this Doctor might actually be mad enough to take it.

But he had eased up and mellowed out by the end of series 8. When Missy hands him that army, he remembers that he's just an idiot who tries to help while he's passing through. He saw himself as a soldier in Danny, and he hated him for it. He saw his bad habits rubbing off on Clara and got scared. He knew he had to lighten up. So he lightened up.

Twelve went through the same character arcs as One and Six. They started off as jerks who had to be told off by their own companions, but they were pussycats by the end.

Overall I have liked the NuWho but that doesn't mean all of it. There are definitely low points in the series but there are plenty of high points too, from start to end. Clara definitely went on too long and was boring, I think most of her early seasons were just boring until she and Capaldi hit their stride.

I'm not going to give up on the show unless this new showrunner proves to be a disaster.

Finally got to see this years Christmas Special (The Husbands of River Song) today. I liked it. Thought Capaldi and Kingston were great together. Funny and sentimental....nice.

Soon I won't even be able to watch reruns on Netflix. This is gonna be the year without Doctor Who. Didn't expect that. :(
