Dr. Strange: Rotten Tomato Watch Thread

Maybe not remarkable but as I pointed out, something as miniscule as 2 reviews can be the difference between hitting a bench mark or falling short.

Oh. I see. Sure, that's true. I was just speaking to the randomness of the number of reviews for similar types of movies. There wasn't a whole lot of variation in my eyes and it makes me feel pretty sure that DS will end up in the neighborhood of 260-280 reviews.

Also, I don't worry about the difference between 89.5% and 90% or whatever. If we didn't live in a base 10 world, it wouldn't matter a whit. Still doesn't in my eyes as it's not an election.

To me 90% and 89% look a lot more different than 91% and 93% or even 94%. If a movie gets to 90% then it will turn head but if it's 89% then it's just a movie with good RT.

Just like if Dory made 500M then it would turn head but only 486M means it just makes a lot of money.

I guess that's the disadvantage of being a statistician and an engineer. It means a whole lot of nothing to me. I look at numbers in a continuum and small differences in numbers are only important if they have some statistical or decision making significance. 89.5 and 90 look an awful lot like 90 and 90.5 to me. 49.99 and 50.01 look a lot different to me if it's an election (and the challenges have been settled).

Similar to if the three highest grossing films at the end of the year were 1.6 billion, 1 billion and 990 million. Even though there is only a 10 million dollar difference between the latter two and a massive 600 million dollar difference between the first two, the billion dollar film will be associated with the top dog for the simple fact that they both belong to the exclusive "billion dollar club". That is the dominant narrative that would be carried out in the press and among fandom.

I think it's a guarantee that the Winter Soldier will eventually get to 90% and I hope that DS can stay there. Certainly not a huge deal either way, it's just icing on the cake for fans of these films.

Are you guys really going to micro-examine critical reviews, which are all purely opinion and observe why some are less valid then others and then prop up the reviews because they give the score you want them too for the film?

Did you read Rex Reed's review? My opinion of him (even before this review) is that he is a pretentious, overbearing snob who couldn't find his @$$ with a roll of toilet paper.

What do YOU think of T-Rex the great?

Uhm there was someone trying to discredit a critic that gave rotten review a few pages ago but I don't have think anyone is doing it now?

I never thought of it before, but I guess there are some advantages to being me. The 10M difference between 990M and 1000M is essentially the same as the difference between 1000M and 1010M.....to me. Doesn't matter....to me and it's hard for me to understand why it would matter to most people. :cwink:

Just so I'm clear, I'm not trying to discredit Reed :woot: , I just think he's a pretentious, overbearing......and I always have. If he gave DS a decent review, I'd STILL think he's a pretentious, overbearing.....

Personally I give the movie a fresh rating, but I still quite enjoy reading well-written rotten reviews. OTOH Mark Hughes' review is absurdly positive that I don't agree with and wondered whether he was being sarcastic.

Oh I didn't mean you, it was someone quite a few pages ago.

Yeah. I knew that. My post came in just before yours did and I wanted to explain that my distain for that pretentious, overbearing #$@^& ......PRECEDED his review of DS. He reminds me of the stereotypical 1960s snobby film critic that got caught by Columbo LOL

To be fair I actually agree with you and do read most of the reviews. I'm a huge fan of indie/art-house/foreign cinema and like a lot of films that are considered "rotten", but I admit it's hard sometimes to not get wrapped up in the "sport" that fandom is increasingly becoming and treat RT ratings like QBR or Corsi ratings, etc. Bragging rights, confirmation bias, etc.

215 reviews now, 194 positive 21 rotten
90% and 7.3 Avg rating

I mean it's his opinion. Roger Ebert IMHO is one of the greatest film critics and commentators that ever lived, and there's plenty I disagreed with him on. For example, he hated Die Hard, but thought Die Hard 2 was great filmmaking and credited Renny Harlin's European sensibilities. Now, there are times where I think Ebert presented some critical analysis I thought was way off or insane, or he would fixate on the weirdest things. But at least he always generally explained his thought process and point of view.

Rex Reed isn't my favorite critic out there, but the man's put in his time and work in the community. He's a seasoned veteran.

I acknowledge that it's basically a sport fandom thing now where it's like QBR or Corsi, or even sport rankings. I am a reviewer who wants to be on the Tomato meter some day, I think sometimes people take it too seriously or they look for the wrong things.

Just for example, if Doctor Strange ends up with a higher score than Winter Soldier, IMHO, that doesn't make Doctor Strange a better movie. Winter Soldier is still one of the best films to come out of the MCU and I think it set a new bar for what you can do with these superhero sequels.

RT is useful.

I agree with it most of the time.

Maybe I have a critic brain.

Anyway, I can weed out less rewarding movies sometimes just by reading forums and using RT.

Just got back from the movie amazing! The story was pretty simple but good and man the action was something else. I think I may see it again but in 3d! Some really funny parts to.

Yeah. I get that it's HIS opinion and that's fine. It doesn't stop me from thinking that he is a snobbish bore. There are a lot of negative reviews out there and I tend to read them and just say "meh". Reed, IMO, is stuck in a different time. Yeah, he's been around, but it doesn't mean he isn't a narrow minded dinosaur.

I didn't go see DS yet only because someone in my family has a health issue, but will hopefully see it Monday. I'll make up my own mind then, but, after reading Reed's review, I'm sure I'll like it. There is no better endorsement than being panned by Reed for the reasons he put forward.

Sorry to hear about your relative, hope he/she gets well soon. IIRC you are a Big Strange fan,I'm sure you'll absolutely adore the movie!

I'm kind of wondering why there's been so few reviews for Dr. Strange when compared to other recent MCU films. It's almost like there's either a bunch of reviews that haven't been posted or some reviewers are waiting until they see it this weekend like everyone else.

215 reviews are "a few"?

Thanks. Yeah. Big Strange fan. Big Thor fan. Big Captain Marvel fan. I have several of Strange Tales (Mordo, Dormammu, Umar, etc.) and Journey into Mystery (with the Mighty Thor) from the 1960s.

I have no doubt I'll love it. I'm also a HUGE Cumberbatch fan. Especially loved his Sherlock and can't wait until it's back in January (as I recall).

If there are 40 more reviews, it will be at TWS level. Another 10-20 beyond that will put it squarely in the middle of MCU review numbers. I don't know if we can expect that at this point as I don't follow RT that closely (other than to trash Reed LOL).

Well for a long time people have said that if critics don't like super hero movies then why are they reviewing them. Maybe some of those critics have stopped or only bother with more anticipated movies.

There's nothing to really worry about anymore. Doctor Strange has far surpassed all expectations and predictions. The film is already a huge success. It's tomato meter rating means a similar amount of critics liked this film as they did Winter Soldier. Which, I mean, I like Doctor Strange, but I still think Winter Soldier is one of if not the best movie Marvel Studios has ever done.

It's getting fantastic reviews. It's scored very well with audiences, and it's going to comparable business to Thor: The Dark World. It's already made at least $132 million overseas. For a movie about Doctor Strange, that's pretty spectacular.

The film is a genuine, bonafide hit across the board.

It speaks that Marvel cannot be taken lightly when they continue to take these lesser known properties and characters and turn them into major brands and beloved blockbusters. Just for example, Marvel has never released a film that's received a Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Pixar can't say that right now.
