Guardians of the Galaxy Drax The Man on the Sax: a Thread for the Destroyer - Part 1

He survived that impact because of regeneration, that has nothing to do with his strength or durability.

He was durable enough to [BLACKOUT]protect the rest of the Guardians from most harm. If he only had to protect himself he could have walked away from that crash. I think Rocket even hints at it.[/BLACKOUT]

Still I'm probably pushing it since I liked Groot alot in this movie. I'd also say Rocket is an engineering genius second to Stark in the MCU. I need more FEATS!!!!!!!!! Really can't wait for GOTG 2.lol

Nah you're not pushing it at all, this is a valid point one that I didn't even consider.

So I agree with you, I also agree the Rocket is a BEAST at engineering only second to Iron Man himself.

I had a lot of doubt in his role as Drax but after seeing the movie I think they made a great casting choice. He did fantastic.

Did anyone catch the names that Drax gave [blackout]for his wife and daughter? I think it was in the scene where he confronts Ronan on Knowhere.[/blackout] He says something like [blackout]"...my wife (insert name), and my daughter (insert name)."[/blackout] But I missed the names. I wasn't expecting them to be given names, but I'm pretty sure they weren't the same as in the comics (which makes sense, given Drax's apparent alternate background).

I loved Drax's drunken ''call out Ronan'' scene.

It really was the equivalent of a drunken phone call to someone after a few too many.

Biggest positive surprise of the movie. Judging by the trailers I thought they would go too far with the dull-witted version of Drax but they really made it into something quite endearing while stile keeping him intimidating.

He's not even really "dull-witted." It's just that the whole "takes everything literally" is apparently a quirk of his people/culture (judging by Rocket's comment).

Like I said they took the dull-witted version of Drax and made it into something endearing (him taking everything literally).

Indeed, they even made him into a "walking Thesaurus".

Wasn't the movie version of Drax originally going to be a human whose spirit was reborn in an artificially created body like in the comics? wasn't he supposed to be a sax player? Was that the scene that was filmed but was cut from the film?

That's the comic book version, but I never heard that they were planning to go that route in the movie.

Drax: What if someone does something and I decide to remove his spine?
Corpsman Dey: That’s murder…and also illegal. So…no.

That quote from Drax immediately brought this moment from an episode of Smallville to mind.

I was impressed with how Bautista handled some of the comedic moments. I wasn't expecting to laugh much when Drax's character was around. But I believe he contributed just as much to the humor in the film as Quill, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot did.

The character Drax was the surprise of this movie. Batista, definitely the weakest of the bunch. He was very hit or miss with his deliveries.

Have so enjoyed eating crow over the performance of Bautista, he was great in the role, happy to be saying that after being unhappy with his casting.

My only problem was Drax being a bit weak in the movie. His punches had no effect on Ronan before Ronan got the infinity gem, so how does Drax plan to kill Thanos?

I hope Kronos gets involved at some point and makes Drax stronger when he is around Thanos or something.

Loved Drax. Kudos to Bautista for really nailing that performance. Drax, like the other characters, had a surprising amount of depth and personality. His speech about friends at the end was awesome

I died laughing several times, but none so hard as, "Nothing goes over my head! My reflexes are too fast...I would catch it." The way he looks off in the distance proudly as he says the last part was priceless. I missed the next 90 seconds of dialogue because I was cackling like an insane person.

^Ha ha, that was gold. This movie had so many golden moments from every character, but Drax were some of the best. Also loved:

"Why would I put my finger on his neck?"

The thing is, Drax was a pretty difficult character to portray. The actor playing him knows he's supposed to be funny, but he has to play him completely straight and make it believable that he's THAT naive. And i like that he wasn't just a rage monster angry at his families loss the whole time. Bautista played him more melancholic and hurt than angry.

I mean we're not talking Shakespeare here but Drax was a more complex character than your usual brutes. And Dave portrayed him very well.

Isn't he like supposed to be like specifically lethal against Thanos?

Its possible he will become an anti-Thanos weapon, but that will probably be a specific plot point, not something that is already the case. Maybe he gets transformed and empowered by Adam Warlock using the Soul Gem, before it falls into Thanos' hands, or something.

I think at some point Drax will receive an upgrade allowing him to fight Thanos and glow when he is near. Maybe he gets it from warlock or Kronos

Agreed, Bautista played him spot on, I loved the performance, I havent been this happy eating crow in a long time. My one complaint was the one we discussed about his power levels.

That is what I think as well, I think Kronos will give him an upgrade during a fight with Thanos or something. The way it was presented in the movie, he wouldnt last long against Thanos.

Batista did the ALS Ice Bucket challenge. The video is on his FB page

here it is on youtube
