I thought the studio would be smart and give the movie a 60mil at most budget. I just do not get why studios believe that every single idea has a huge audience. Can you imagine if 110+mil was spent on Arrival and John Wick? Both would be failures with those kinds of budgets. Hah. I doubt enough people knew about the casting controversy to make an impact on the numbers. Most people just did not care to see it for one reason or another.

Mostly I think people had no idea what it was about or why they would want to see it.

I've been saying this for years and Deadpool is further proof that all of these movies don't need these ridiculous budgets. You could deduct what Scarlett was likely paid for GITS & the budget would still be too bloated.

It isn't much of a surprise that this ended up being over-budgeted. Isn't Paramount slated to lose $500-$700 million in the upcoming years? This is the reason why.

Yeah Scarlett isn't the reason the budget is as big as it is.

Yeah, I think the big problem is that they really misjudged the name recognition of GitS, at least in America and the budget and marketing reflected that. Not enough people in the US are familiar with the property, so they really should have treated it as if it were entirely original.

Something that never happened with Scarlett Johannson. It was tested on another actor and immediately decided against.

I just saw this and it was very good. I have never seen the 1995 anime or read the comics so I can't compare. This movie looked amazing and I really liked the world. Soundtrack was great too. Scarlett Johansson was good but near the end the fact that they didn't cast japaniese actor started bothering me. It felt wrong. But I still liked the movie.

Maybe it's the way they were constructed. Even in the Spider-Man movies they used a ton of CG character models over live actors and stuntmen.

For comparisons, 2 years earlier, The Empire Strikes Back cost $18m. So yeah, that was big money back then.

Deadpool had it's budget dramatically slashed right before production and they had to scrap or rewrite extra action scenes. Also note that most of the first half goes back to the whole highway sequence outside of the flashbacks. If you think about it, the film only has three really major action setpieces. Compare that to something like say Civil War with a $200 million budget, which has like seven action setpieces.

I think GITS would've benefitted greatly from a Deadpool-esque move by keeping the budget smaller and more reasonable. Don't get me wrong, I understand this is meant to be futuristic and what not, but still, $110 million seems too high. I'd like to think $60-$80 could've got the job done and would've lessened the impact of its underperformance.

Maybe $80 million more realistic. But whatever, not my money. Honestly, I never thought making a movie out of this was the best idea because it's always the deal of how do you cast the movie with the material being so based in Japan. And then, how do you make it accessible to mainstream audiences.

Yeah, Ghost in the Shell is more popular than your run of the mill anime or manga. But as good as the two movies were, they weren't giant box office hits or anything. How do you turn material like this into something that all moviegoers are going to want to see. The producers probably thought casting a big star like Johansson was their answer.

Anime is not nearly as popular as many would have you believe. It is still very niche.
