Duncan Jones' Warcraft - Part 1

It's a matter of resources. I like that this movie is taking a risk, but you gotta create compromises with the first film.

Yeah they could have done Warcraft 1 with Alliance POV only, but than it would be pretty lame for all the Horde fans.

But that's not what Jones wanted, in which I understood his reasoning to NOT make the Orcs look like one diminutional characters.

doesnt this movie have a lot of pre production left before it's released? I mean I'm chalking up whatever CG bits that look funny up to it being unpolished so I'm not gonna worry, the only thing I care about is that it's a good movie based on a world I love.

Exactly, that's why it's good to have Durotan and the Frostwolf Clan at the very beginning.

You mean POST production? It's been in post since May 2014 and Jones himself has said it's pretty much done.

Are you done-done with the film?
I am done-done. I’m hoping and looking forward to potentially working on an indie sci-fi thing of my own quite soon. We’re ready to roll. We were really excited by the move to the date in June that we’re on now because it’s the same day that Jurassic World came out. From my perspective, I think that’s a good sense of Universal’s faith in us. Originally, we were on this December date, and then Star Wars came and sat on it. If you know me online, you know that Rian [Johnson] and I have a very good-humored rivalry about his Star Wars movies what I’m doing with Warcraft. I’m pretty much done, and I’m excited to potentially squeeze in another indie before I come back for more.

I can see fans of the game enjoying the trailer but as someone not really familiar with it the trailer just came across as generic as hell.

Well it *was* debuted at a game convention. Maybe not the smartest move. I would have thought grabbing the attention of people who didn't know what Warcraft is would have been higher priority but I guess Legendary felt otherwise. No doubt there are more previews to come.

It's loaded with fanservice though. There's a harvester in the Westfall Orc shot. The Dark Portal is in another one. Even the geography is accurate, those shots of Stormwind you can see Elwynn forest, Westfall and Duskwood. Redridge is there too. Ditto Blackrock Mountain. EEEEEE! :awesome:

I was kinda looking forward to this.... but that trailer.... meh! The visual effects are not even the weakest point of it, but its premise.

That's kind of how I feel. I can't help but think that this is a much more interesting concept, and they're presenting it so generically.

As far as the CGI goes...it's not so much that the CGI is bad...for me, it's the design. CGI is CGI, and I know when I'm looking at CGI. But they've done this weird pseudo humanoid design with over the top, exaggerated, "cartoony" features that are also packed with detail, and that rarely works well on film. It almost clashes with itself, and that makes it all look really fake.

I don't know what you guys were expecting. This is Azeroth come to life so I'm glad the Orc designs, voices and other things look spot on to the games.

they could make the arms and legs 10% less bulky and it would still look like the games. the design is almost 100% adapted to the screen. its to much IMO

lol some joker earlier in the thread complained that they didn't have blunderbusses in the first game.

Speaking of, I wonder how many baby seals will get clubbed in this movie?

I personally wished that they had just made the whole movie a CGI movie like their cinematics which I think look damn gorgeous...but they wanted to do live action so I'm ok with it.

Again, i'm in the minority but I honestly never thought Avatar's CGI was all that awesome, everything looked obviously fake so I don't get bothered by CGI in a movie. I'm just happy I'm getting to see Azeroth realized and hope the story/acting and movie itself is good. I'd love to eventually see WC3 adapted since WotLK was my favorite expansion.

Despite Jones saying the movie is done done, the VFX work and polish will continue all the way up to release, that's how it works. Several VFX artists or people in the movie industry said so on Reddit, it's how it works. It's all going to keep evolving. It's great that Star Wars is being released in December, it gives them 7 extra months.

I will definitely see the film. Warcraft is not some sacred text to me, so I'm not hugely invested with how it is as an adaptation.

That said, the trailer did not impress me all that much. I watched the Quicktime version, and the CG still didn't impress me that much. Doesn't look quite as impressive as the recent Planet of the Apes films.

I think some of the scope did look impressive.

But are audiences really going to be into this? I get that WoW has a big fanbase and all, but for this movie to be successful, a lot more people have to see it. Just because a movie has big epic looking fantasy in it doesn't mean it will automatically draw in the LotR crowd.

It's also just more proof that photo stills don't tell the whole story. It's how it looks in motion.

No it isn't. MoS was complete and stood on the shelves for months when the date moved. The same happened with HBP. More post work like that probably isn't budgeted for. The reason why the movie is almost done is because it was suppose to be out in December. If the post production was original schedule to end in May/June, it would, with the same budget.

What kind of accent is Fimmel doing in this? Is it French? Whatever it is, it certainly wasn't what I was expecting.

i thought i was the only one who noticed it. it sounds so generic hehe ;)

I almost think the main guy looks like Chris Pratt in some shots.

The main guy's extremely Charlie Hunman-esque to me.

Not impressed. I mean yeah CGI is just not looking good for me. Looks very video gamish and some scenes are straight out like a cut scene from a video game. Hope it's good though.

He could be pulling a Speed Racer and making it hyperrealistic.

....I know that's a lie.
