Duncan Jones' Warcraft - Part 3

At the end of the day, strictly from a business perspective, if you make more money than you spent on making the movie/adverting...its successful.

As for China, well considering Legendary just became a subsidiary of the Wanda Group (a pretty big Chinese Conglomerate), doing well in China is going to be one of their major goals. And from early reports over there...its doing very well.

As a person who has never touched a single Warcraft game ever in my life, goddamn I was impressed with this film.

The only reason I went to go see it was because Duncan Jones (big fan of his first 2 movies) & Robert Kazinsky were so passionate about the film (and hilarious) during their pax east panel. And it really shows, there is so much detail in the film (most of it lost on me, the Warcraft virgin).

The characters are all good, interesting, and fun. The actors are all likable and do a very admirable job. The story instantly hooked me in making me want to know more & wiki the whole Warcraft history. The two sides in the movie was great to see, fed up of movies where villians are so 1 dimensional or evil evil evil. Gives the film a breath of fresh air and is the one big advantage it has over LOTR.

Also the graphics are incredible, trailers do it a disservice at such a crappy quality. Up close the Orcs have some of the best mocap/cgi I've seen in a film for such un-human charactes.

I really hope it can do some solid international numbers because I would love to see a sequel. Best fantasy film since Return of the King by a long stretch, highly entertaining,

It aint gunna flop.

This just in from Forbes:

AND according to Box office Mojo its already made 121 Million of its 160 million budget...and it hasn't even come out in the states yet.

It won't make all the money...but im pretty sure Blizz and Legendary are gunna green light a sequel. Especially with how well its doing in China.
That is not how that works.

It still won't be enough.

I think this has a good chance of a sequel because a Chinese owned company will do things to please their home market. Even if the profits aren't really there. Though you'd have to worry about a situation like the new Turtle movie, which has lost a ton of its audience. It also seems Chinese currency is losing a lot of ground to the dollar.

I know there are a lot other costs and factors involved. The point i was trying to get across is that the movie is doing well internationally. Very well collectively.

This.

As much as i enjoyed TMNT II, its not a great film. And its issues/problems should serve as a cautionary tale to Blizzard/Legendary if they go do Warcraft II.

All these numbers are from China. They don't make the movie profitable.

I love how all these super impressive numbers are only coming from the Chinese box office alone.

The thing you have to remember about Legendary, is that they are owned by Wanda. Legendary is still a US based company, so they don't necessarily get special treatment (though I imagine Wanda will help films get in more than other studios). So, yes, Legendary still gets the 20-25% the other studios.

But Wanda owns 6% of Chinese movie theaters. So, the parent company will get a bit more from China than the other studios.

A little bit of the old cross the name out on a ticket & replace it with Warcraft :cwink:

Not really. It is doing well and China is looking great. But they only get somewhere between 30-40% of the international take. It hasn't been released in the US yet, but right now it is tracking horrible, and if it releases to its tracking numbers, it won't be good for the collective total.

All it really needs to do is avoid BvS levels of drops, and it will make a massive amount in China. It also really helps that the opening week is a holiday, apparently. Does it really matter how much less they get if you are looking at $400 mil?

Yes, it matters. It matters quite a bit for a sequel. Now again I think it will probably get made because of the change in the ownership, but if you are making 400m in China, you are only looking at 100-125m in actual cash.

And Warcraft wasn't actually made for 160m. That was the rebated cost. That is before we get into the massive international marketing push.

I guess it will be another case of international numbers saving the film.

Okay, I watched it, but I won't go into spoilery reviews. To be honest, I was expecting it to be so much worse than it was, that I actually found myself enjoying it a lot - more than I enjoyed any of the Hobbit movies, for example. I don't know how much sense it will all make for someone who hasn't played any of the games and knows the backstory, but I feel like the fans should like it.

All in all, I think it was a decent 7 out of 10.

I've given up trying to predict what films will make bank in China.

Watched it last night. Better than expected. I quite enjoyed it but I'm a long time player of the game and know the lore fairly well so ymmv

The last Transformers movie made over 300 million in China. I'm not good at predicting Chinese box office but once I read that Warcraft was beloved there I thought it would do a crap load. Warcraft is one of those films that are more international type film's even though it's an American film.

Yeah, certainly seems that way. China is the reason Pacific Rim made money, right? I guess they just like bad CGI and loud noises.

It's the reason why Pacific Rim 2 is still on the table. It was the first movie to crack $100 mil in China. With the expansion in China, it is a reasonable bet that Pacific Rim could do good money in China. And with the parent Wanda able to profit more from any movie popular in China.

Yeah, it makes sense. I wasn't interested in Pacific Rim 2 at all, but now with Boyega on board and Del Toro off the project, it's piqued my interest a bit.

Same. I actually have a little bit of interest in the film now.

#Warcraft dominating China #boxoffice today w/ est $44.5M to $46.5M in day 2. Biggest 2-day start of all-time ($91M+) beating Furious7.

Well they have a pretty short time to enjoy all this good press for the box office because that ain't gonna last much longer. I love how it's all impressive now but then when the domestic totals come in it's going to be a totally different tune.
