Elfman is Working on the Music

What about his score to X-men 2? was it a rip-off?

Not really. I saw the main title theme as a more heroic version of Michael Kamen's music for the first film. And, the rest of the music was pretty good. I think he used Kamen's music as blueprint.

Not really. Elfman has a kinetic style that Young is sadly missing. The PERFECT example is the train sequence in Spider-Man 2.

Chris Young (ignore the clock tower cues. That was Elfman.)

Elfman is so much better. I can see that he was trying to actually tell the story through the music...I didn't get the same from Young. I like elfman's music particularily when Spidey uses the first to webs to try and stop the train. One thing I really admired from elfman's theme is that he gave Ock a 1950's monster movie-esque sort of theme  Thats what Id aim for if I was doing Ock's theme as well.

Kamen's theme for X-men was brilliant...especially his them for Mystique...that theme is genius and very effective, too bad he died :(
I think the person who'd do a great job for X-men's score is Hans Zimmer.

It was a great score. I didnt like how powell changed it all for x3. I didnt think it was as good.

Powell killed it...he tried to hard to be like Elfman...It was too obvious

For X3?? No amount of music regardless of how awesome it may be could have saved that piece of crap people refer to as X3.

Why didn't Bryan Singer direct X3 instead of f---ing up Superman?

Because he got a sweet deal for making Superman, way more money than the X-Men films. Singer made more money off of SR than Warner Bros. or Legendary Entertainment did. That's why.

Exactly, he's done too many comic book and comic book-like movie. He needs find to movies that are like nothing he's ever scored before. Just stay away from comic book films altogether.

Yeah, but he hurt his career in the process. Before Superman Returns he was a "hot" director. Now, he's the guy who f--ked up Superman.

Hahaha...I guess. He'll probably bounce back with another good movie, perhaps in Supes sequel, maybe. :O

Probably. I think he should go back to his roots. You know...stuff like Usual Suspects and Apt Pupil then come back to another superhero type movie.

True, but he can't do that, he's commited to Supes' sequel, and that's his next film.

no offence but I perfer the movie train sequence theme (top one) to the elfman theme (bottom one)
So do I. Elfman's music is all over the place, like he scored the scene without looking at what's on the screen.

Believe it or not, the closest thing to Elfman WAS Shirley Walker. Unforunately she is no longer with us. The composer who's like Elfman now is John Ottman. Why? Cause he rips-off Elfman all the time. Example:

In Superman Returns when we see the robber take out that machine gun to shoot the cops a few second of music (or perhaps even a minute) was ripped off from Elfman's Planet of the Apes theme. Then, there was that Hide & Seek movie with Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning. Ottman ripped off Elfman left and right with his score. In fact, when I first saw the movie during the opening credits I said to myself, "did Danny Elfman compose this?" then I saw "Music by John Ottman" and I was like, "oh God."

Young's music for the train sequence is fine on its own. Yet when you compare it to Elfman its when you realize how bad it is. Young just played the same notes over and over again and added some Elfman in and thats it. Danny Elfman actually made an exciting score that was energetic and put both the Spidey and Ock themes to good use.

Actually, I thought Ottman's score to Hide and Seek ripped off Christopher Young instead of Elfman. Aside from dramas, Young also has scored some notable thrillers with slow, melodic main title scores. I think you confused the little girl vocals with Elfman, though. Elfman does overdo the usage of choir in some scores (although Ottman does overdo choir usage too).

The train sequence, everyone knows that Raimi loved the temp track for that scene, which was from Christopher Young's Hellraiser. Elfman refused to write in that style or copycat the track, and so Young was brought in to adapt his own piece for that scene. I've listened to both Elfman and Young's cues for the train sequence and while Elfman's piece is good in its own right, the cue just isn't as energetic as the scene demands. While Young's piece was repetitive, it managed to convey the excitement and energy of the scene, even if Young's style of writing stuck out like a sore thumb.

I'm secretly hoping that the "runaway train" cue will emerge on the score album of Spider-man 3.

any one else happy that the goblin song is back? I am happy it's backe, it gives me a chilling feeling yet it is so very cool. I hope elfman helps out with that theme as well as the other themes in the film.

Singer is attached. Whether one likes it or not...unless WB gave him the boot, which I doubt.

Recently it was reported that Singer was up for that Robin Hood movie that starts shooting in 2008. So, maybe he has already been fired and WB is still waiting to make an announcement.

Maybe you're right.

Too each his own. I thought Elfman's train cue was awesome and perfect while Young's version was too repetitive.
