Supergirl Episode 3.03 "Far From the Tree" (SPOILERS)

Well that's one way to "explain" why everyone takes human form lol. It's a very weak one but ...it's something.

This is so much daddy drama and majority of the cast is absent, Kara has been silent for most of it....the martians are boring humans...Im kind of ready for this episode to be over.

Usually third episodes of a season are in tough position for the first two as being a throwaway. Here this may be the opposite.

You could've kept Kara on Earth for this episode. All she's done so far is just react to things happening- she hasn't contributed much.

Man, I love Carl Lumbly.

This wedding shower storyline is officially out of place in this episode now, imo.

Oh look! It's the rest of the cast.

I will give them that, casting him was some good stunt casting. The iconic voice of J'onn being live actions J'onns dad.

Winn is barely in this episode until now and there is no Lena or Reign either.

It was really unnecessary for Supergirl to go with J'onn to Mars as I get the feeling the writers want to concentrate on Sanvers fully without her.

I like how all the Martians have been neutered in the power department.

Supergirl is at her best when she's dramatic like with her scene with J'onn's father. She got J'onn's father to open up.

Oh, so Kara came along not just to ask questions, but to be the voice of reason.

That's a thing, I guess.

Without the Martian storyline, this would have been a throwaway episode.

Wish they had kept it without the intro. Most shows leave it behind by now.

I have no problem with a secondary characters getting center stage for an ep or two at a time. I have nothing against the Maggie character, as I do like her, it's just she hasn't been used good enough. The last ep when she covered for Kara in the bank vault was how I've wanted them to portray her.

Overall though, it's been sweet seeing her and Alex together. Will be sad to see her go.

One thing about this ep, is the overuse of CG. The budget isn't there to get it right and not be noticed as soon as they use it, esp with J'onn's daughters. They should spend the budget on practical make-ups.

Best part of the episdoe is the Britney music.

I'm fine with noticable CGI in these cases since it is tv after all, I don't expect to many miracles. But yeah they totally could've done this all practically and probably saved money.

Haha, Bugs Bunny reference. And I confess the CG on the martians is pretty decent.

Lots of clunky directorial choices this ep, imo.

That car ship needs to be used a lot throughout the rest of the season. Maybe have Alex use it with James and Winn if they want to go on missions in foreign countries.

I like the green Martian children and I wish there were surviving Green Martian children so they can have a safe haven in the DEO.

Not buying this dude's complete 180º on the staff.

Having M'Gann back just brings up my annoyance with how boring they made the character compared to her comic/animated counterpart.

You could have J'onn, Kara was mainly there because her names in the title.

An episode with mixed results where one of the storylines felt out of place. However nice to see Supergirl back to her old self mostly. Her saying MM is the most powerful person makes me wish it were true considering how he was utilized. This is probably David Harewood's favorite episode.

Oy. First clunker of the season, imo.

First of all, if the budget allowed, the WHOLE episode should have been a more fleshed out version of the Mars storyline. Going back to Mars is a big enough event to warrant it, and when I say "more fleshed out," I mean give the TITLE CHARACTER something to do besides be a spectator for 80% of it. I liked the stuff happening in this storyline, and I like J'onn's dad, but this whole thing felt half-assed at best. Judging by them leaving out James/Winn/Lena this ep, they have no problem leaving out regulars, and Alex/Maggie could've been left out of this one just fine.

But I get it, the budget didn't allow for that to be the whole episode. They needed something easy on the budget to devote the rest of the episode to. So it should have focused on the James/Lena/Edge storyline, or even the Reign storyline, because [blackout]unlike Maggie, Reign isn't leaving in a couple of eps, so character development for her wouldn't feel like such a waste[/blackout]. Or maybe show Alex/Winn/Guardian having to deal with some threat they'd normally need Supergirl/J'onn's help with. But using that time on character development for a tertiary character (as she's not on the show because of any connection to the main character, but to a secondary character) is a waste of screentime. Especially when it just plays as an excuse for this show to soapbox again - which feels particularly contrived when you have Maggie's dad ranting about them "building a wall to keep us out," as if the writers forgot or didn't care that they've created a world where the President is in fact NOT Donald Trump, but an alien herself with very pro-immigrant views who would almost certainly not be building any walls to keep immigrants out.

And the cutting back and forth between these two completely disparate storylines was jarring as hell, imo.

So yeah, not a fan. But to end on a more positive note, as I said, I like J'onn's dad and look forward to seeing more of him. And J'onn's space car needs to become a permanent fixture on the show. Also, next week looks interesting.
