I think it could work. Cronenberg was able to smuggle all these heady ideas about living and disease and watching your spouse be wrecked by physical change into a genre horror flick that more easily resonated with audiences than a straight up AIDS movie or cancer movie would have. It's why I like genre. If a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down, than genre can be that sugar. I don't expect Fantastic Four to operate on that same level of thematic tragedy that Cronenberg can achieve, but I can't complain about the ambition either. I welcome the challenge and I maintain an optimism that Trank can tap into that meaty subtext that he so clearly wants to present.
