Hearing Chris Stuckmann talk about Fantastic Four and bringing up Batman and Robin as a better movie makes me really hopeful for tomorrow night...

If I may offer a suggestion: table whether or not it qualifies as abuse.

For me the question is: is it something that deeply bothers Ben?

Because if it is -- then I do think it could be a problematic use of that line. If Ben is basically becoming the thing that used to make him feel bad about himself as a coping mechanism, then that's ... not really a heroic or healthy thing to do. That's transference.

TBF though, I think this is something I'd need to see the movie for myself for to judge. If Ben's just mildly jealous and annoyed that his brother is stronger and is finally glad to gain that himself then I probably wouldn't take issue with it.

Did anybody who saw the film get the impression that the references to Victor's actual name were added in post production?
I saw a review over on CBM that suggested that .

Yes. They are clearly easy fixes/inserts. The first time you see his name, its in a type of shot on a packet document that easily could've been done for pick-ups, re-shoots stuff like that.

Once again, the blogger/hacker anti-government thing is basically accurate. That is basically exactly what he is the first time we meet him early in the film.

Saw it a few hours ago. I haven't hated a movie this much since Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

That's not where he gets his catchphrase. Never heard his brother say it.

Once again, older brothers being horrible to little brothers is kind of a fact of life.

His brother says it really fast. It goes "It'sclobberingtime."

I remember this because I laughed at the line.

You're reading too much into it bud. You're talking about deep seated, purposeful character growth, be it positive or negative; when you see this thing you'll pick up fast that no one involved with writing it put that much thought into these caricatures.

Now if your worry is with Ben turning into a "bully" himself, you probably won't be happy with what he does with the government

Chris Stuckmann just destroyed this film.

Lawd.

If he destroyed it...I burned its corpse to ashes and then salted the earth under it so no nothing grows again, so all people will remember it as a lesson of what took place.

Another thing I noticed with the reshoot footage was Miles Teller's "costume" looking more simplistic, and flat compared to the original version.

Just saw the Chris Stuckman review. He eviscerated the movie. Stuck it like a pig, roasted it and ate all the resulting bacon and pork chops. Jesus take the wheel please.

I'm gonna be like a kid waking up on Christmas morning to check the rotten tomatoes score

Saw the Schmoes review it too. Not as scathing as Stuckman's, but there was a sense that they were in a hurry to warn people away from seeing this movie, since they didn't even wait to get back to the office to record it.

Chris Stuckmann made me actually want to see this... as a Netflix rental. Same reason as Manos and Bio-Dome. I will not pay to see this in theaters. It's an atrocity.

I'm the opposite. The fact she did like it is more reason for me to skip this.

Miss Black Widow will die in Age of Ultron and be reincarnated as Captain Marvel likes it? Well, there's a death sentence in my eyes. :o Not like this film needed help with that.

Don't care for her videos

Grace Randolph liked it. My opinions fall more in line with hers than the other guys.

Her opinion was mixed. It wasn't entirely positive. And the Fantastic Four are about the characters. Mistreating everyone but Reed isn't the FF to me.

I'd rather we get a film that utilizes the FF but doesn't try to shoehorn in superhero elements because, "this is a superhero film!" Keep it sci-fi horror without changing the genre but make sure the jokes hit and we get all sorts of playful banter between the cast as they go through terrifying transformations as a coping mechanism since they're still in shock about being in life or death situations.

Keep the tension high throughout the film, don't slow things down. Have the characters bond while they go through impossible odds and have no control over their bodies. Make them go through character development in the middle of set pieces.

Keep them out of mundane places. Put them on other planets, in other universes, on space stations, in space ships, etc. They're the FANTASTIC Four, that's the opposite of banal. That and make the Negative Zone more interesting. It's a whole other universe where there are populated planets with other alien races. A barren world doesn't really capture the level of wonder that the FF have always embraced.

And save Doom for the sequel. Use a different villain. He doesn't need to be in every film.

I know I wrote this earlier but this is a treatment for an FF reboot which isn't horrible. That manages to ground the FF while still embracing them, that's definitely a sci-fi horror film first and an superhero film second and actually keeps the characters interacting with one another.

Combine that 616 and UFF origins. Since Fox messed both of them up and audiences not knowing how they got their powers in the MCU continuity, there needs to be a retelling of the origin, sadly. But it can be done in a much more fun way that feels far less tedious and avoids hitting the same beats and integrates the action into the plot so we don't have one final battle in the last few minutes of the film.

Most of the film won't be set on Earth. Just the very beginning and the very end. The general outline is Apollo 13, Alien, Gravity and Bill Nye the Science Guy rolled into one.

Act 1. Reed, Sue, Ben and Dr. Bentley Whitman are prepared to enter a wormhole into the recently discovered Negative Zone. The problem is Whitman gets sick with a flu which causes a different team of four NASA astronauts to undertake the mission. Naturally, Reed doesn't want to lose his shot at the Nobel Prize for physics after discovering the Negative Zone and opening up a wormhole to another universe to some dictator over in Europe who's also the world's leading AI specialist. So Reed brings his brother in law on the mission despite him being a self-admitted loser who does nothing with his life and absolutely not an astronaut as the take the shuttle through the wormhole into the Negative Zone where they discover the planet Mantracora. The location was already known after trading radio signals through the wormhole which proves that there is indeed intelligent alien life inside. They meet aliens, proclaim that they come in peace, Reed and Sue make love on the alien planet, etc. Johnny is the one who takes his helmet off first after Reed confirms that the atmosphere is breathable but exposure to another universe may very well change matter upon contact. Nothing unusual happens to any of the four on Mantracora and they prepare to leave. Meanwhile, a shadowy armored figure sneaks onboard the spacecraft.

Act 2. Upon returning to our universe, Johnny accidentally causes a malfunction while the shuttle is within Earth's orbit due to his inexperience as exposure to the Negative Zone causes all four astronauts to begin transforming, causing severe damage to the shuttle. Ben's skin is becoming scaly, making him resemble his appearance from the early Lee/Kirby FF issues. Johnny starts a fire in the shuttle and doesn't know how to put it out and Sue accidentally keeps hitting sensitive equipment with force fields while turning invisible. Reed seems to have the fewest problems but he begins flopping around and melting into his own suit before reforming. The shuttle is too damaged to land after all the damage caused and they're forced to dock with a space station. Before they're able to do that, they have to fix the hole in their shuttle within the vaccuum of space. before running out of oxygen. Ben is beginning to grow larger and his suit is ripping which causes him to stay behind and contact the space station with an offhand mention that Ben can't breathe in space. The four dock and Ben completely collapses. on the floor. Reed begins looking for answers as to what's happening to them as he finds that he now lacks bones of any sort and his skin, organs and muscles have increased elasticity. Sue is not only able to refract light around her body but also project force fields which she can control and is the most stable of the four, requiring the least medical attention. Johnny is held in a secure cell until he can get his powers under control for safety reasons. Ben is dying due to his body crystallizing. His scales are now literally turning to stone and his organs are now beginning to crystallize. Reed and Sue need to search for a medicine within the next hour before Ben dies of organ failure. All this time, the armored stowaway begins killing the astronauts on the space station and people start mentioning others going missing. Comments about missing people is just blown off just to poke fun at slasher movie tropes. Reed and Sue develop a medicine in pill form which is able to save Ben by keeping him from growing larger and preserving his innards. Ben is now kept in an extra large space suit and is learning how to move again in his new body. The good news is that as long as he takes his medication daily, he's theoretically immortal. The downside is that the pill that saved his life sterilized him.

Act 3. Reed and Sue discover a dead body on the space station and the lights go out shortly after. Ben is over with Johnny keeping him company until he's deemed safe to return to Earth. Johnny has developed a good enough control over his pyrokinesis that he's able to use his finger as a match and keep the lab lit up enough for both of them to see. The two start bonding over jokes and scary stories. The last of which is about a, "haunted space station" which at the very end has a loud scream coming from the hallway. Johnny wonders what that scream was and Ben mentions that somebody tripped over something while the station is on reserve power. Johnny suggests that they still check it out since some poor astronaut could be hurt and Ben agrees, breaking Johnny out of his cell. They two of them then find no astronaut but some blood splattered on the wall. Ben jokes that he tripped over something sharp. Reed and Sue are heading to find the generator to turn the lights back on but spend more time stumbling in the dark looking for a flashlight than they do making any progress, both claiming that they know where a supply closet is with Sue making mention of budget cuts to emergency lights on the station that makes their situation seem like something out of a monster movie. Ben and Johnny run into Reed and Sue and they naturally all freak out at first since it's dark. Johnny comments that it's like something out of an episode of Scooby Doo. Sue asks the question of, "then where's the monster" and that's when Annihilus appears through the light generated by Johnny's flaming hand. Annihilus introduces himself and says that his world is known as Tyanna and his species has spread throughout the Negative Zone. He was on Mantracora to plant seeds of his species and alter its atmosphere to wipe out all life and replace it with that of his own species, a plan he abandoned after he saw the FF's shuttle exit the wormhole and land upon the surface. He has discovered a whole new universe to conquer, starting with the world they are orbiting around. He holds out several capsules and mentions that they will be the instrument of Earth's destruction. His final statement is, "this shall be the hour of your destruction at my hand. May the Arthosian Empire conquer your world." Ben's replay is, "No it isn't. You have the hour all wrong. It's Clobberin' Time!" A battle occurs aboard the space station with Annihilus preparing it for reentry into our Atmopshphere. Eventually, Annihilus' mask breaks and we see a nasty looking mantis face. Within seconds of contact with the atmosphere of our universe, Annihilus' face begins rotting and looks like how he looked in John Byrne's run. Reed begins contact with mission control and demands that they open up the wormhole as they're carrying some very dangerous cargo back with them. (Including the cosmic control rod which was gifted to the FF in the first act which Reed has on him and Annihilus wants as it as it grants control over energy within the environment.) Reed asks how much he wants it and throws the CCR into an escape pod, then launches the pod into the wormhole just opened by NASA into the Negative Zone. The FF then get into their own escape pods and escape just as the space station goes crashing down somewhere in the Indian ocean. The FF are later seen recovering on the beach in Thailand. Sue mentions that she's pregnant and just got off the phone with the Nobel Comittee and Reed is formally nominated. Mr. Collins, the CEO of the Future Foundation (who owned the space station the FF were on) comes to Reed and tells him that he got a lot of very intelligent, irreplaceable people killed and unleashed a dangerous alien who could have destroyed the world as we know it... and he's offering Reed a job as chief researcher with five floors of the Baxter Building belonging to the FF. Reed asks if the FF on the company uniforms stands for Fantastic Four of the Future Foundation and Collins' response is, "eh, why not."

Post Credits 1 - A Kree colony. A blue-skinned Kree boy points up at the sky and asks his parents what something is. The camera pans upwards and zooms in on the wormhole as Annihilus (with CCR and a repaired helmet) emerges and behind him, through the portal lie a fleet of spacecraft, prepared to slaughter billions.

Post Credits 2 - Reed is shown accepting his Nobel Prize as the camera zooms out to reveal a screen then further to show a lab filled with robots and then turning around to show Doom, in his iconic appearance slamming his fist down.

Characterizations

Reed: A fast talker who has a tendency to narrate what he's doing, particularly when it comes to the science of what's happening. As much of the film as possible will be intended to be scientifically accurate. He's a brilliant theoretical physicist who loves what he does and believes that scientific progress is the key to humanity's future. Has a tendency to ramble to himself when nobody is around to hear him. His main weakness is that he gets so focused on what he's doing, that he doesn't realize when he does something seriously wrong, although he'll be the first guy to admit it. He's filled with a childlike wonder at everything around him and seeks to study and make himself a better person at all times. Even when all seems hopeless, he retains his optimism and never believes in giving up, no matter the cost. He's also highly protective of those around him.

Sue: Reed's wife who's also the only person to talk him down when he's out of line (although she caves when she hears about potentially getting a Nobel Prize). She deeply loves her brother although she often gets frustrated at his lack of motivation and maintains a close friendship with Ben. Her main weakness is lacking initiative. Her weakness is that she frequently defers to others and doesn't speak up enough, then explodes when she's finally had enough.

Johnny: A hotheaded NEET who Sue admits has potential but seldom applies himself. He just claims that it's a lack of opportunity but does nothing to better himself until he gets the chance of a lifetime. Enjoys joking around and uses humor to relieve tense situations, much to the annoyance of others.

Ben: A gruff fighter pilot turned NASA astronaut. Is often grouchy but his heart is in the right place. Has anger issues but can be reasoned with. Usually morose but likes to smile whenever he feels like he's capable of doing so. Starts out disliking Johnny during Act 1, being furious with him during Act 2 and then during Act 3 bonding with him.

Annihilus: Speaks in a monotone with an accent best described as, "mechanical demon." Wants to wipe out all life in our universe on the belief that humans wouldn't go exploring the Negative Zone if they didn't seek to conquer. Nevermind that his mission is to conquer new worlds, wipe out all who live there and then repopulate with Arthosians and his native planet's life. Holds to fatalistic beliefs that he can't change even in the face of evidence and holds that the only truth in life is survival of one's species.

Bentley Whitman: Not seen aside from one quick scene where he lies on a bed watching TV with a box of tissues and sees that Reed has hijacked his shuttle. He starts screaming about how he'll one day pay Reed Back.

Doom: Not seen until after the credits but mentioned as a brilliant AI programmer who lost his face in a shrapnel explosion during Latveria's war for independence in the 90s. Was able to rule his country as a teenager and turned Latveria into the world's wealthiest and most prosperous country on Earth.

Mr. Collins: Owns the Future Foundation in Four Freedoms Plaza as well as a space station orbiting Earth. Not much else to him.

Costumes: Starting off with traditional space suits and later being swapped out for new unstable nanosuits on the Space Satation which can keep Reed from tripping over himself and Johnny from lighting his clothes on fire. Sue gets a chameleon effect and Ben just gets an XXXXL space suit that the Future foundation had lying around. Suits are blue with an F for future Foundation in a circle as an insignia. They're said to adapt for any condition and were originally designed to help with handling hazardous materials.

A film that is nowhere near as boring as Trank's film with a climax that doesn't feel rushed. If anything, it starts out with a shuttle launch to an alien world and ends with a space station crashing down to Earth with a shuttle repair sequence right out of Gravity or Interstellar with body horror happening simultaneously. It's the film that Fox tried to make here but failed at.

The downside is that it'll need a $200 million budget and I can't see the film getting that unless Marvel is rebooting.
