Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns Animated - Part 1

The animated movie is an adaptation of Frank Miller's TDKR, but even you have to admit certain scenes were added, for example the scene towards the end where Bruce joins the mutants in Cave was not exactly as in the comics, here Oliver Queen first leads the group and then Bruce joins then later.

I said the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1 and Part 2 movies are extremely faithful to Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel, I didn't say they are exactly the same entirely in every way. Films and comic books are two different mediums of course. There are minor alterations and some dialogue was added, some scenes were extended a bit. The majority of the moments and dialogue in the Part 1 and Part 2 films is pulled straight out of the graphic novel. And many the important points that were expressed in the internal thoughts in the novel are included in the spoken dialogue in the films. Also in the novel Green Arrow/Oliver Queen is seen with the Batboys, former members of the Mutants gang and Sons of the Batman gang, in the Batcave. Batman/Bruce Wayne faking his death appears to have been Oliver's idea. Oliver told Bruce that Superman/Clark Kent would leave Bruce alone by faking his death and staying quiet, and Oliver was right.

Now we know Batman Beyond took heavy inspiration from the Dark Knight
Returns and I've just been thinking was Commissioner Barbara Gordon based off Elen Yindel?

Watching Part 2 again right now as we speak I love how well they captured the imagery from the book, they especially got my favourite panel spot on:

I only saw both episodes a few days ago. I cant' say i was disappointed , because it was exactly as expected. An half baked adaptation , with no direction , terribly executed , poor animation (those cgi models straight from a ps1 ....that car race wow!) , lifeless backgrounds (those interiors !!) and with a pace where nothing matters , nothing lingers , nothing stays. There's no weight to anything. This is like a fast reading , going through panels as fast as possible. A bunch of background noise that tries to give some rhythm to the images , but it's damn near impossible with such a poor job with the visual direction

Just a terrible adaption. Yes , it is better than Year one , but that's just because that was really bad.

I liked Robocop's voice. Great job by Weller. Batman's artwork also is pretty consistent.

A static medium vs a motion medium is completely different. They abide by different rules . You cant' force one over the other. And if you want to be faithful , at least , try to mimic the tone , the washing colors (those terrible digital coloring...blargh) , the city decay. They mimic the panels , but they are never able to capture the essence of Miller's work.

I've always dreamt of seeing Miller's DKR , as a big animation project. It has such an epic feel. A grand story , that would translate beautifully into a big project. Animation is US , looks to be very stigmatized . There's no place for drama , for seriousness. It's a shame , because this would look amazing as two fantastic films. Maybe one day i'll see animation completely flourish , and be able to adapt all this great American comics that look wonderful with pen and pencils , the way they deserve.

The limited budget can't be an excuse. Mask of the Phantasm is , albeit is limitations , a fantastic film.

Stick to the books.

Both films are amazing and after trying to read the book several times and not getting past the first 10pages I went in to watching these films thinking it will be ok and I love them they are great. Voice cast was spot and have watched several times

While the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2 Blu-Ray Combo Pack and Single-Disc DVD were released on January 29th...

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2 Two-Disc Special Edition DVD set is finally being released on March 12th.

The Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2 Two-Disc Special Edition DVD set includes:

• The Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2 feature film.

• Documentary – Superman vs. Batman: When Heroes Collide. Featuring Denny O'Neil, Richard Rader, Michael Uslan, Bruce Timm, Mike Carlin, Grant Morrison and Bob Goodman. Batman and Superman have a history of being portrayed conversely as wholesome super friends and conflicted enemies. This tells the fascinating historic significance behind the Superman and Batman conflict, and exploring the parallels between the conflict of Superman and Batman, to the similar conflict of Zeus and Prometheus, also the similar conflict of Achilles and Odysseus, in Greek mythology. Superman is like Zeus and Achilles, while Batman is like Prometheus and Odysseus. Fascinating.

• Sneak Peak at Superman: Unbound, the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie.

• Three episodes from Batman: The Animated Series, handpicked by Alan Burnett - "The Last Laugh" (1992) written by Carl Swenson, and "The Man Who Killed Batman" (1993) written by Paul Dini, and "Legends of the Dark Knight" (1998) written by Bob Goodman in collaboration with Bruce Timm.

I've never read the comic but were those stupid dolls the Joker used in the comic? Seems like they could've done something a hell of a lot better

I find those dolls darkly funny. To each their own. Yes, those twisted dolls are from the original comic. They were a parody of Cabbage Patch dolls, similar to the Garbage Pail Kids cards in 1985, and the Chucky doll in Child's Play (1988) and the sequels.

I liked the dolls too, I love those panels you posted, had me in stitches when I read the book.

There's one panel where the Bobby doll is telling some kid at the carnival to piss off lol.

Watched both TDKRs back to back and looking at it as a one collective film, it's by far the best animated superhero film I've ever seen, as well as one of the best animated films I've seen period. I thought it was fantastic all the way around and the score was phenomenal

Any news of a release that combines both movies?

I'm wondering if I should wait for this or buy the movies individually.

No word yet on when they'll do a 2-movie bundle... But I'm sure it's coming.

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

If they include some more Animated Series episodes, I'll double dip.

Also, that cover is gorgeous.

well glad I didnt buy the individual blu rays. Will be picking this up

Is that both parts? If so, glad I haven't gotten around to getting them individually.

Yeah it's both. Also hope it's put together as one movie. Doubt it will be, but that would be amazing.

Never bought them either. Was waiting to see if this edition was coming out first.

Now I regret getting both parts lol.

I like Part 1 much more than Part 2, but both are great Batman movies
