Sci-Fi Fringe Thread - Part 2

I have no issue with a bittersweet ending, but if you're going for that you kill her in the finale, not 9 eps out.

Eh this gives the audience more time to absorb it and deal with it. Plus we dont know what the plan is for the season. It may have been necessary for her to die now instead of the finale. And you have to remember this whole season is the end of the show. They wont wait til the finale to wrap everything up. Some things will get wrapped up throughout the season and due to the abbreviated length of the season some things will seem to happen more suddenly than one might prefer. I think this may been the case with Etta's death. Had it been a full season with filler episodes she may have survived til say episode ten but due to the abbreviated length and lack of filler episodes her storyline wasnt padded making it seem like she was shortchanged.

Personally Ive always found major character deaths in finales to be a double edged sword. It smacks of BS sometimes as if the characters couldnt die til there was no more episodes so they wait for the finale so they dont have to deal with the death. The worst offender being Anya's death in the Buffy finale.

Well if we are taking that route I see no point in taking her out at all and don't bother going for bittersweet ending, just have the team succeed. To me all they have done is take the only good thing about this season out of the show for shock value.

The whole season really feels like an ode from the writers/producers to Dark City anyway, it is so far removed from what made the show enjoyable IMO.

I completely agree about the show being removed from what made it great in the first place. I thought last season was a big let down as well at least at first.

I think some are putting Etta up on a pedestal. I didnt find her to be that interesting and far from the most compelling thing. She was barely even developed beyond being a jumping off point for this future.

Now that she is gone I find the crew being in this world with no guide even better.

So damn weird for Olivia and Peter, they have a daughter for a couple of years -I believe- then all of the sudden she's all grown up in this sinister future, then all of the sudden she dies in their arms. Is just too dark and twisted, even by Fringe standards.

It's called drama. :o

Yes, but not traditional drama. The circumstances makes it weird.
I'm not saying I didn't like it. In fact, I want to see the consequences of this.

ah nuts... she was too pretty to survive. Especially when she outshines the primary female lead both as an actress and as a beauty.

Gets that feeling that the plan will shift so that Peter can go save her in the past... like father like son

Yeeeeaaa NO. :o

It was a great casting choice, yes. There was something in her relationship with Walter that was very sweet. His final face when she died was priceless. Another acting gem from Nobles.

Great season, magnificent. This future stuff is fresh and new and fun. Etta was hot but I guess she had to go.

It was sad to see Etta go but I thought it was perfect the way it all went down. It felt natural and part of the progression of the show and the characters.

I think this will be the moment that changes Peter. I see him focused on killing every last Observer.

^^ well it's either walter or peter. i'm going with peter.

So I haven't watched any of the new season yet, instead I've been rewatching the whole series from the beginning to get my girlfriend caught up.
Question though- I had assumed the season 4 episode "Letters of Transit" was a Season 5 episode that was placed near the end of season 4 simply to get us invested in returning next season since everything seems to wrap up otherwise.
And so I assume that I could initially skip it on my watch through, and re-watch it wherever it may fit in season 5. Is that the case? if so, would I watch it first, or inbetween certain episodes. . . and if so, which ones?

Hey Sarge, you've got to watch it first because it sets up so many Season 5 elements. (I initially listed four different character/plot elements, but removed them because they I couldn't make them spoiler free. If I were you, I'd avoid this forum like the plague until you catch up.)

Series Finale Press Release:
THE FIFTH AND FINAL SEASON OF “FRINGE” CONCLUDES WITH A TWO-HOUR SERIES FINALE, INCLUDING THE 100TH EPISODE, FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, ON FOX

Climactic Nine-Episode Countdown Continues with an All-New Episode Tonight

As the Fringe team fights for humanity’s future in the fifth and final season, the imaginative journey toward the end of the acclaimed series will culminate in a climactic conclusion during the two-hour final-two-episodes event Friday, Jan. 18 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. This milestone date will also celebrate the series’ 100th episode.

Series Co-Creator and Executive Producer J.J. Abrams reflected on the show’s run: “It has been an absolute honor to have been a part of the weird and wonderful world of FRINGE. I will always owe the cast and crew for pouring their hearts and souls into every dimension of this series. Creating the show with Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman was a joy, but watching it evolve over the years into such an imaginative, insane and heartbreaking ride is nothing less than a thrill. I am grateful to our blessed fans, and to Kevin Reilly and Peter Rice and everyone at the glorious Fox network for allowing FRINGE to reach its bittersweet conclusion.”

Executive producer and showrunner J. H. Wyman said, “Above all else, from the bottom of my heart, I would like to personally thank everyone involved with FRINGE. From the most amazing fans, to our incredible cast, writers and crew, and our wonderful partners at FOX and Warner Bros. – we would not be here without you. It simply cannot be overstated how grateful I am for the ongoing and unconditional support we have received over the past five seasons. It has been both mind-blowing and humbling. I’ve always been a fan of science fiction, and to be able to tell this story about a family – a family that, through everything, fought together for survival – has been a highlight of my career. As we approach the final chapter, I can hardly believe it, and I’m just truly thankful for this unparalleled experience.”

“FRINGE has truly imagined the impossibilities over its five seasons and will go down in the books as one of FOX’s most riveting and creatively brilliant series,” said Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “It has been a blast to work with J.J., Joel and their masterful creative teams, as well as with Anna, Josh and John and the rest of the most talented cast and crew in the business.”

Throughout FRINGE’s thrilling five seasons, the series has followed Special Agent OLIVIA DUNHAM (Anna Torv), enlisted institutionalized “fringe” scientist WALTER BISHOP (John Noble) and his globe-trotting, jack-of-all-trades son, PETER (Joshua Jackson) as the Fringe team explored mysterious occurrences linked between parallel universes, doppelgängers, Observers and unimaginable threats. The unlikely trio supervised by Special Agent PHILLIP BROYLES (Lance Reddick) and assisted by ASTRID FARNSWORTH (Jasika Nicole) – often led them to science and technological corporation Massive Dynamic, founded by WILLIAM BELL (guest star Leonard Nimoy), and its enigmatic chief executive, NINA SHARP (Blair Brown).

The fifth and final flash-forward season of FRINGE is set in 2036, when the “Observers” have become ruthless rulers of a dystopian society. As the battle for the world’s future continues to unfold, the Fringe team is in the midst of making its final stand to save humanity. In the aftermath of the devastating loss of Peter and Olivia’s daughter, ETTA (guest star Georgina Haig), the intensity escalates as the combat continues and Peter makes a pivotal and game-changing move in the all-new “An Origin Story” episode airing tonight (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Man, this episode was just great.

Where to begin:

-Holy crap, where did this Anna Torv come from?!? This is probably the best acting I've seen from her to date on this show! The scenes where she got really emotional (at the beginning and the tape-watching scene) will probably rank among some of my favorite Olivia moments in the entire series.

-While we're also on the acting side, Joshua Jackson was on fire this episode, especially during the scenes with the Observer.

-That little speech Walter gave to Olivia about knowing how the pain can cause you to build walls around your heart and break universes. Ugh, all the feels! I'm keeping that quote once I can get the exact wording.

-I loved that little moment with the Observer talking about how we ascribe certain emotions to certain things that are unrelated. I never really thought about it that way before.

-That part at the very end where they intercut both scenes of Peter and Olivia dealing with Etta's death in their own way was very haunting.

Seriously, who wrote and directed this episode? I want to shake their hand or hug them or something. This was solid.

Holy hell.

That's all I need to say.

That and, damn Peter....just....damn...

Holy crap! When Peter activates the wormhole device, it blinks "Green, Green, Green, Red". How did I not notice that the first time? :wow:
