Plenty of films lose directors.far too many dismissing gambit.all the people online dismissing gambit is crazy.
I'm not sure if I've ever seen anything Liman's done so I can't speak to his skill as a director but everything I've heard matches up with what you say.
For some time now I've had my doubts this film would ever get made since it sounded like kind of a misfire from the word go. It stumbling so badly out of the gate makes me think I might have been on to something.
I urge you to watch The Bourne Identity and Edge Of Tomorrow, 2 of Limans best and both very good movies.
Personally I think Gambit will happen and we will get news soon.

Oh I've seen Bourne Identity, I remember enjoying it. I also have been meaning to see Edge of Tomorrow based on the strong word of mouth.
You're right in that this movie will probably happen. I've just had a gut feeling about it since they announced the film. It's just a head scratcher all around.
I think if Fox are still making the film that they should take a huge cue from the massively successful Deadpool and lower that budget drastically. I'm not saying that the film should cost 58 million but 150 million plus doesn't need to happen. Another thing is make Gambit look as much like his comic book counterpart's most famous look as much as possible. People are over the all black thing, it's not 2000.

Storm and rogue won't be in this film.X-Men films are in the past and it appears gambit is set in present day.besides bella donna is female lead of gambit.Sinister is more likely to be used as villain in future X-Men film.
I've been saying for a while now that Gambit is not a solo character, it's not going to be easy to make him one and sell him to the public at large. Fox should not make the film if they have too many doubt's.Was never on board with this project to begin with so I'm not really losing any sleep over FOX's decision to push it back.
The first Wolverine solo movie had a bunch of familiar faces. CGI Patrick Stewart? Everyone else was either a new character, de-aged or revised beyond recognition. And Jackman's Wolverine was already highly popular. The sequel also had familiar faces. For all of two short scenes; the other of which being post-credits. Even Deadpool's first movie had the X-Men represented by Colossus and Negasonic there trying to recruit Wade. How is Negasonic a familiar face? The Hugh Jackman cameos were funny. I don't have any reason to believe there won't be familiar faces on a Gambit movie.
X-Men: ApocalypseDeadpool's success should be an exciting development for Fox, now they know that it's possible to make an X-Men related hit without leaning heavily on Jackman's Wolverine.
...Hasn't come out yet so we don't have box office numbers.X-Men: Apocalypse
I don't see why Gambit, a character not established yet like Wolverine and a character known as a X-Men member (unlike Deadpool), wouldn't have an X-Men vibe in his movie. Especially considering the plan is to make the movie part of that universe.
About the project, I also think that the character don't work as a solo hero. I mean, they can make a first movie with his origin story

Then...it depends on the direction of Gambit's story.but then what? I mean, he is not Wolverine
Can we stop acting like this wasn't expected. If we get no word of filming next month, then we can start worrying. The delay was inevitable. Honestly, those two dates they have reserved may be just to see what other of their projects can be ready.
Ironically, black (not leather) makes the most sense for Gambit to wear while on a job...
EDIT: Should we also be criticizing Thor, Captain America, Ant-man, even Guardians of the Galaxy for their similar budgets? While Gambit can work on a smaller budget, there is nothing wrong with them putting the money into this.
Any character can work as a stand alone, with the right treatment.
