Game of Thrones General (Non-Book Related) Discussion Thread - Part 1

FINALLY they give Nikolaj Coster-Waldau some Emmy recognition since he was snubbed for season 3.

I did too, i'm shocked it took almost 3 WHOLE season for people to get connected to the show. I was puled in as early as the first season, what sold me was when i saw Dany getting her dragons at the end of season 1. And Sam encountering the undead hoard in season 2. And even before then their was Black Water.

I thought it had potential... but it was difficult to follow that first season. I didn't know who Jon Arryn was. I guess Lysa Arryn's opinion can't be trusted... cause she is in grief? But like, Its not like I knew her and how hysterical a woman she was. There was a million and one examples like that. The show engaged in a lot of world building right from the getgo, and it took some time for me to be into it. I like watching Season 1 now, because I can appreciate all the context. Scenes like with the dead dire wolf and the black stag now have a lot more meaning, because I know the players, and the sigils, etc.

This was the scene when I really got invested.

Season 1 showed us a scene in which Lysa was breastfeeding her son who looked to be around 10 years old. Not much else needed to be known about her to know that she wasnt playing with a full deck.

It's just an example, of which there are many. There are a lot situations that are just referenced, but very important. The way Ned's father and brother died. The mad king. John Aaryn, Little Finger's boyhood attachment to Catelyn, the Hound's scars, the Greyjoy rebellion, etc. etc. A dizzying amount of details to remember. That's fine... it's just that the payoff comes later in the show. Theon's upbringing is a great example. The show mentions that Theon isn't a Stark and that his father had a failed rebellion... but that only feels like trivia in Season 1. World building, world building, world building. It's not until later that that plot point bares fruit and we see why it matters so much.

I think HBO should have but down some extra money to show the actual battle at The Fist of The First Men to help casuals stay engaged for what's to come. Instead they jut sho the grim march back to Caster's keep. Interestingly enough i think Hardhome saved season 5 for a lot of people.

I loved the first episode and it had a great hook at the end. And the next few episodes were also a great follow up. They got me early!

It would have been nice to have an even bigger budget for certain scenes, sure.

Season 7 Finale script says Viserion was made into an Ice Dragon like the Night King turns babies into White Walkers.

But then a stranger sound comes from the north. Tormund looks to the sky, and sees a mote on the horizon, coming in fast.

Very fast.

It’s moving so fast we don’t get a clear look at it or the NIGHT KING on its back before it is upon us...

EXT. EASTWATCH, NORTH SIDE OF THE WALL

...hitting the Wall with a blast of blue flame.

Bran’s meaningful birds take flight.

A massive chunk of the Wall breaks free ahead of Tormund. The ice dragon glides away, and we get our first clear look at him, and at the Night King on his back. He’s done the same thing to Viserion that he did to Craster’s sons. Only those were babies, and this is a dragon.

That would mean Viserion isn't a mindless wight. He is a thinking White Walker Dragon just like the white walker humans.

Explains why the Night King touched Viserion. I didn't pay much attention to that when the episode aired, but that's how he turned the babies. He had to touch them. Unlike with wights which he can raise without touching.

I guess it makes sense. Dragons are very intelligent. Turning one into a mindless wight would waste that intelligence. But by turning him into a White Walker type dragon that can function like the other white walkers he'd be even more formidable.

Blind Items Revealed #8

August 10, 2018

This pay cable company really wants a spinoff of that ending soon hit show. So, they assigned four pilots to two executives, neither of whom have any idea about the franchise other than the episode or two they watched of the show. This is turning into a disaster and the executives spend more time taking shots at each other than they do anything actually substantive. So, for all of you hoping for something good and your fix after the show ends, you may be disappointed.

HBO/Game Of Thrones

Yeah apparently AT&T, they now control HBO, is demanding HBO produce a lot more content a lot faster to match Netflix. They care less about quality and just want quantity. Some at HBO that were at the meeting supposedly weren't happy about it and pushed back, but AT&T will get what they want. One thing they probably want is a GOT spinoff as quickly as possible.

I feared this might happen as soon as I heard AT&T got control of HBO. They will drain HBO of its prestige and "quality over quantity" mentality if it increases profits.

There will be a few survivors:

John, Bran, Jaime, Missandei, Gilly, Sam, the Hound, Davos... maybe.

There'll be a lot of deaths though:

Dani, Theon, Brienne of Darth, Melisandre, Varys, Mormont, Grey Worm,

Just my guesses. I have no idea if they'll kill off Arya and Sansa or not. Seems like they wouldn't have to, but it'd certainly get a reaction if they did. I could see a cool spinoff with Arya doing Faceless Man assassin stuff at some point.

For some reason, the only person I'm more or less 100% sure of surviving is Sam.

Game Of Thrones’ Season 8 Release Date Might Be Later Than We Thought: Exclusive

HBO’s president of programming, Casey Bloys, said the show would be premiering in the first half of 2019. And in order to qualify for the Emmy Awards in ’19, a series must air between June 1, 2018, and May 31, 2019. So if HBO wanted the final season of “Game of Thrones” to be considered in the next Emmys, it would have to air before the end of May.

Alas, I’m here to tell you, our April watch has ended.

In an interview with HuffPost, “Game of Thrones” visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer discussed the show’s Emmy hopes (it’s nominated for 22 awards at the 2018 ceremony) as well as its future eligibility. “In two years we’ll be eligible for the Season 8 work,” he said, “which we’re just beginning now.”

That’s right. He said the show will be eligible for the 2020 Emmys, not the 2019 Emmys, meaning it would be airing the bulk of its expected six episodes after the 2019 deadline: May 31.

“We’re going to be toiling away on Season 8 until May of 2019, so it’s eight or nine months away,” he added. “But the prequel is starting to shoot in February, at least the pilot. So we’ll still have quite a lot to do on Season 8 when they’re beginning.”

****ing hell. Get y'alls asses in gear and get this **** released.

That deadline is early as hell. Season 6 finished its run at the end of June 2016 and it was still eligible for that year's Emmys.

Can they just announce a firm release date already?

I doubt HBO wants to lock in their 2019 programming schedule yet. We'll probably get a release date closer to the end of the year with the first teaser.

HBO has since announced that the entire s08 will be out in time to qualify for Emmys. So that puts the debut 4/21/2019

GoT returns for its final six episodes that will air during the first half of 2019. There have been reports over the weekend claiming the show’s return has been “delayed” to mid-2019 making [it] not eligible for Emmys until 2020. Rest assured, “first half of 2019” means exactly that, and HBO expects the show will air all its episodes in time for the 2019 Emmy eligibility cut off.

Awesome. hope it pans out, thanks.

The 8th year anniversary of the show is Sunday, April 21 2019. (Season 1 premiered 4/17/2011.) So 4/21/2019 is the perfect premiere date for Season 8.
