Rogue One Gareth Edwards directing Rogue One - Release Date Dec 16 2016

Ooh, strong pick. A little assist from the make-up department... yeah, I could see it.

The official plot synopsis revealed at the panel:

It's set before just before the beginning of ANH. Gareth got the crew that did Zero Dark Thirty, Blackhawk Down, and Saving Private Ryan to help him bring this film to the screen. He says it's going to be gritty and unlike the other films.

Damn, that's a lot of good talent.

I doubt this movie will have the traditional type of villain we've come to expect in a star wars film. It's a military type story so the antagonist will likely be an officer of the Empire or multiple Imperial officials. Tarkin will likely be in the film. He was head of Death Star One. Vader could show up too, but Gareth seems to want to make a film that doesn't have the Force and Force Users playing a big part.

This whole thing is exciting cause it's a totally new direction for a star wars film.

That's a good point. It would be great to see Tarkin.

I was initially displeased about Rouge One being a prequel of sorts before the Rebellion truly kicks off in ANH, but Edwards said it's a lot closer to ANH rather in between, like I first thought. So I'm fine with it now. And to emphasize the "war" aspect greatly interests me. I think this will be good.

Changed my tune pretty quick...

Peter Culling? Is that an amalgam of Cushing and Cullen? :funny:

If it's really just about the mission to get the Death Star plans, it will most likely cover the few weeks or days prior to the opening on ANH. So yeah, much closer to ANH than RotS.

I say bring back Wayne Pygram. He was the Tarkin stand in for ROTS. I think he could do a good Peter Culling impression.

I thought of him, but he'd need a better make-up job. I seem to recall it looking way too much close-up.

I'd expect Tarkin to have a large role in this film. As for a younger Leia, if the rumors are true with the Flashbacks, just reuse Billie Lourd

Maybe... If it's a very small thing.

I'm very hesitant to recast any major players if 1) they're being portrayed close to the age we've already seen them (hence I'm fine with Guiness being old Kenobi and Mcregor being young Kenobi) and 2) if they've got large parts and are seen or heard a lot. That's why I'm fine with the sound of the TFA flashbacks. I can picture them being shot from the right angles and being obscured with costuming/light and shadow/CG'd so that quick bits of them wouldn't be a problem.

I have no problem with recasting; Abrams' Trek films have been able to work with the old and young actors beautifully.

A proper Rebels vs Empire film done with all the resources a 2016 big budgeted film can have, as well as the return of the Death Star to the big screen. I realy hope this film doesn't disappoint, please Gareth, don't pull another stunt like Godzilla where the trailer was amazing hype, but the film didn't deliver nearly as much.

Stealing the Death Star plans is quite an audacious objective!

In the old canon it was portrayed as a suicide mission. I wonder if our main cast gets out or they all lay down their lives in the line of duty.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised by a good few deaths in this one.

MSW has put up an article about the code names for the upcoming Anthology movies.

Apparently:

Rogue One is going by “Los Alamos.”

Is there any word about Palpatine or Vader appearing in this?

No, and Edwards mentioned no magical powers here, just a group on a mission in a war. I'm sure they will be mentioned though. At the very least the Emperor should be.

I was going to suggest Christoph Waltz as Tarkin, but Colm Feore is a phenomenal idea.

Going to post my cast for this in the morning.

Ok. Well, that's something different. I hope they convey just how oppressive the Empire is for the Rebels, especially in these early days. How a small victory is considered a major victory for them.

If only I could find a still active link to the trailer or something... *sigh*... *SIIIGGHH*...

EDIT: D-d-d-disregard. :D

Oh, given what we've heard, that's a certainty.

"The Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, before the dark times, before the Empire." But, the Jedi won't actually feature in the movie. “It’s about the fact that god’s not coming to save us, and we’re on our own,” said Edwards. “The absence of the Jedi is omnipresent in the film. It hangs over the whole movie.”

There's another quote out there in which he says that these normal soldiers, in the absence of the Jedi and under the oppression of the Empire, must provide a spark of hope for the rest of the galaxy.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the heroes.

Regardless, Vader is going to be in this. There really is no doubt about it. Although it may be nothing more then a very short cameo at the end with Vader being dispatched to hunt down the Rebels and retrieve the plans.
