Gotham Gotham Season 2, Episode 1 "Damned If You Do" General Discussion

Jerome is probably my favorite character on the show now. I didn't think they could pull off this Joker origin but the actor who plays him is fantastic

Nygma's talking reflection in the mirror is the most I have enjoyed him on this show so far. I haven't been a big fan of him on the show but I thought his more confident talking reflection was ok.

Either my standards lowered dramatically over the summer or Barbara is much better now that they've embraced the crazy. I legitimately enjoyed her this episode. So that's something.

He's schizo. I'm guessing the violent one will become the dominant personality eventually. He will be obsessed with committing crimes the police can't solve. While the other personality will be the one that leaves the riddles as clues because he wants it to stop.

^I love that idea.

Zaardon was the best part of this episode. I hope he returns for more. Jerome was also great. I loved how enthusiastic he was about everything, from becoming Barbara's friend to working for Galveson. Selina and Zsasz working for Penguin is just perfection. I want to see what the repercussions will be of Gordon killing that mobster.

It felt like I had missed an episode, though. Had Harvey quit being a cop at the end of last season? Also, I remember Gordon holding Loeb's daughter over the commish's head as blackmail material. Did something happen to negate that?

Just how Bruce acted.. and Alfred was.. well lets just say Bruce is a minor and Alfred should be asserting some authority.

I thought it was pretty clear that Alfred secretly wanted to blow something up too. Otherwise, I'm sure he would've put Bruce in his place.

As a fan of the series, I really liked the premiere. I still found the Bruce stuff to be the weak point as it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the story, but that was true last season too.

The scene with Victor, Penguin, and Loeb was one of my favorites of the series thus far. Loved that one. The death of
Sionis
was also great, even though I saw it coming.

I'm looking forward to more with Nygma. His brief bit with talking to himself in the mirror was great.

Yeah that was great, Nygma is one of my favorite things about this show.

I'm loving him too and if he indeed turns on to be the real Joker, I will not mind one bit.

Yeah I hated her so much last season. And then in this premiere I actually enjoyed her. So we shall see.

Pretty awesome trailer, looks good

So Jim is going to know Bruce is Batman, right? They're having way too many conversations where it would be unbelievable that he wouldn't know Bruce is Batman when he becomes him.
In most of the comic universes he either out right knows Bruce is Batman or has put together enough clues that prove Bruce is Batman but has not done anything to confirm it.

Ohhh, you. Don't be ridiculous.

I had the same problem. I have cable, with HBO and Showtime, and tv and movies on demand, but for some reason the finales for Gotham and Flash never showed up. I double-checked and the latest Flash episode available is 18. Wth??? Arrow finale not available either--I don't normally watch it but Flash was supposed to show up.

I got the Flash finale from one of those sites you're not supposed to and it was awesome. Just received my Gotham DVD in the mail so I won't have to do it again, but its really irritating.:thf:

Me and my sis were in a quandary too...we saw the last ep. How did Gordon get demoted? And how did Harvey get fired? Last I saw Gordon had the Commish by the balls....

I've had some **** going on in my life recently and I wasn't even aware that this show had started.
Kinda freaked out that I missed the premiere but my dvr managed to catch it,fortunately.

Really enjoyed this episode!

Really liking Jerome.
Love where things are going with Nygma.
Penguin and Zsasz are pretty funny together.
Barbara was actually......not bad?
Zaardon had me cracking up.

Can't wait for the next episode.

anyone else think that they might try to turn crazy Barb into a proto-Harley? Maybe Jerome experiments with her and the real Harley is a later attempt after he hones his technique.

I think we're witnessing a soft reboot of the show's style and status quo; they wanted to dump some of their baggage and move on quickly, so they quietly shifted things, maybe implied Loeb's daughter is dead or safe somewhere, and gave us a perfected version of the "Gordon gets his hands dirty" plot from last year to transition to the new focus of the show.

I thought this episode was great, the only thing I didn't like was the Zarrdon schtick.

But I had slight disappointments:

1) Bruce not being patient enough to figure out the security code to his father's office. I know he's 13 (or so) but building a bomb which could possibly/probably damage Wayne Manor seems a bit rash.

Although I think Bruce's potential should be ever-present, but he's just startting, him being a bit hotheaded and impatient at times makes perfect sense, and humanizes him. It also reflects on his emotional arc.

I really want to see Bruce Wayne's mind being exceptional. Blowing stuff up was never Bat's first 100 thoughts until Batman '89. Sigh.

2) They should have had a good line for Selina anytime she's in a scene.

3) Well, Gordon actually committed murder at the behest of a gangster. He robbed the guy, beat people up and then killed him because he was being shot at.
Gordon shot back because he was being shot at, could be argued self defense. Of course it was during the commission of a felony, which would mean, if caught, he'd be facing felony murder charges.
I'm ok with that because it was set up by Bruce's inquisition (using the Socratic method), but it does seem James & Bruce are too jaded & too early.

I do want to see more idealism in Bruce as he approaches his unending crusade, because he really does have some fun. :oldrazz:

I like that we are getting to see Bruce's ideals forming and being molded. Like with when Selina killed what's-his-junkie. I think that him not figuring out the password is reflective of that, and his dad telling him he would have figured it out, emphasizes the lesson of that scene.

ohh thats a good point..well played

Don't like the multiple personality thing, Riddler's never been like that before and it seems lazy, but I like your thoughts on it. :cwink:

That is an interesting theory.

The only way this show can work and save itself now is if Bruce decided to become a child superhero and go battle Jerome to put a stop to the villains causing chaos. I'm not joking. I want this show to become a kid batman show now.

God bless you all! God bless everyone in your lives! God bless everyone!
