Gotham Gotham Season 2, Episode 6 "By Fire"

I felt this episode has been all in all a step down from the previous episodes this season. The show's strengths imo are the Galavan, Barnes and the Untouchables, and Bruce Begins storylines. When they steer away from that towards the half baked stories and characters of season one, the show goes off the rails.

Selina's character just seems pointless at this point, and kinda just meanders in and out of stories without really going anywhere. Bruce seems to be heading toward his destiny, Galavan is heading towards his revenge plan, the Untouchables have a forward momentum , and even Penguin is moving towards something.

Its when show's stories and characters are stuck in neutral that the show is at it weakest imo.

Its a passable episode but not one of their strongest.

Whilst I agree with this sentiment, I do think this episode actually gave Selina something to do moving forward.

Selina was warned off by Alfred and has been on her own. She befriended and teamed up with Firefly but now, as far a she knows, Firefly is dead so she is now back on her own but grieving. That is going to push her towards trying to reconnect with Bruce. However, she is going to see Bruce with Silver and get jealous, probably feeling that she's been replaced. She is then probably going to discover the truth about Galavan somehow and become concerned for Bruce. However Bruce is going to think she is just being jealous about Silver and ignores Selina's warnings. Selina will then have to go to Alfred and convince him to believe her despite how badly they're last interaction went. Their joint concern for Bruce is what will unite them.

As I suspected, Silver turns out to be "in on the fix", so to speak. This means her episodes on the show are likely numbered, even if she may not be killed off and even if she may bail short of actually going through with the eventual murder plot. I don't see her and Bruce lasting past season 2. The reason for that is that Bruce is a supporting character, Silver is basically a socialite girl who doesn't have much "going" for herself and Bruce, being a supporting character and so far not shining as brightly as Selina - even if David is certainly competent enough, he just doesn't get a lot of good material to work with - can't "carry" a normal girlfriend subplot. Him and Selina could get together because they are both supporting characters which means it wouldn't result in the show getting turned into Gotham: Kiddie Edition™. They will probably be an item for a while in season three. If Silver returns that will be much later when Bruce's character has expanded.

I think the show was very, very strong last night and it scored a rating of 1.5 despite being up against Supergirl, which frankly is awesome. I didn't mind any of the subplots. There was nothing "misogynistic" about how they killed off any of the female characters. Kringle had a perfectly logical character arc even if it was all about Edward. Guess what, Edward is the Riddler. It's not exactly a shocker he'll get a trigger character for his transformation. If Mama Cobblepot gets whacked, that won't be "misogynistic" either. Oswald is the Penguin. See above. Firefly getting whacked (albeit surviving)? Well, wasn't that the show making an (admittedly hamfisted but rather in-character-cartoonish) point about her rage consuming her?

It's not as if Gotham is scared of killing off its male recurrings! Remember Jerome? Remember Fish blowing Maroni's brains out?

I don't mind Natalie's looks at all, she's really cute, but Camren really is far more stunning. Her acting is growing in leaps and bounds, too, and I have a feeling that David is about to step up his game as well.

Well done, Gotham.

Her family is called the Firebugs, but she has been called Firefly in promotional material and the show. I think it's a two-fer reference.

just watched the ep again and you are correct... Chiklis does call her Firefly. which is odd because the rest of the time she's Firebug

I disagree about Selina, as Firefly was used nicely as a device to consolidate Selina's distrust of law enforcement and keep her on the path of ambiguity.

She's also in a bad place right now after losing a friend (or so she thinks), so it's inevitable her path will cross again with the real friend she has left; Bruce.

yeah this episode was selina's best ep since that one where she clawed that guy's eyes out

I pretty much agree. Selina's character should be limited to small time stuff and street contact information.

What's up with Butch? Did Galavan re-program him, or is Butch simply playing along to help out the Penguin?!

i don't know if he reprogrammed him, but i think he probably gave butch false info on the whereabouts of penguin's mother and then set him free so that penguin will run into a trap

WOW, I can totally see that. I agree Butch's escape was no accident!

The way I see it Butch saw the Penguin's mother somewhere, but Galavan might move her before the Penguin's people arrive.

I liked Bridgit and her mini-story and it was cool to see a bond with Selina.
