The original Guardians weren't involved in the Thanos saga at all. That first GotG team was from an alternate future -- the 31st Century, I believe -- so they only met the Avengers when they somehow travelled back through time.
Iron Man's space armor will probably be revealed during the movie as he's locked away in his workshop creating new weaponry. Feige described Stark as having retreated from the world and holed himself up in the workshop because he is convinced that he needs to wear the armor constantly. Combining that info with the rumor that Tony will create and use forty-something different versions of his armor in the final battle, it's not too big a stretch to guess that the space armor will be among them. He never even has to specify what it does since he's only using controlling the other armors with his AI to help in the fight.
With the space armor already visually introduced, Stark can then go on to test it in the post-credit sequence. He decides to go out of the atmosphere (probably against JARVIS's wishes) to see if the armor is up to the rigors of space travel. But Tony's plans of a short test flight are ruined when Thanos' massive starship Sanctuary II appears ahead of him (or, alternately, an Einstein-Rosen Bridge opens up) and he finds himself taking an interstellar detour....
That's how I envision it happening. I'm wrong, of course; it'll be far different and better than I can imagine, if it happens at all. However they work it, Iron Man & GotG FTW!
I don't think Jarvis would object to deep space travel. He was the first one to mention the idea of space travel to Tony in IM1.
