IM3 was a great film!

IM3 is a great film though, lol.

IM3 is a great film though, lol. Don't get me wrong though, Chris. Thor 2 is ok, and has moments of greatness, but I hated Malekith, hate that Thor was an afterthought in his own sequel, hated that Loki lived (seriously...his death was fantastic), the humor sucked (especially Darcy & Darcy Jr.), and the color palette pissed me off.

Hey I'm right there with you on IM3 I loved it. Was just teasing haha.

Oh Whiskey. Damn you! :grr: hahaha

Holy cow, this movie was fantastic! Fun hijinks in space ... What's not to love?! This movie is especially a treat for comic book fans, because I was certainly nerdgasming over a lot of scenes. Marvel Studios is setting the stage for bigger things while also making some great standalone movies. Not an easy feat!

Groot stole the show for me, moreso than Rocket (though I loved him too). Groot was just so goshdarn cute! Another nice surprise was Bautista as Drax. Who knew he had so much charisma as an actor? He was fan-freaking-tastic in this movie.

Along with the cool action and the really funny comedy, this movie has some heart as well, which was unexpected. The ending was really cute and sweet, which was a nice surprise.

Most of the audience in my theater (including my boyfriend) did not "get" the post-credits scene, whereas I was speechless. [BLACKOUT]My significant other is not nearly as into comic books as I am (he only reads The Walking Dead), and he had never heard of Howard the Duck before (blasphemy! haha), so I had to explain everything to him. He ended up looking up YouTube clips from the Howard the Duck movie once we got back from the theater, and he was both amused and horrified. :funny:[/BLACKOUT]

LOVED THIS ****ING MOVIE. Seriously. It was beat for beat perfect for me. I got exactly what I wanted. All the dopey moments that would normally pull me out of the film played great in this. Thanos made me a trillion times happy, and that after credits scene tickled my comic nerd bone too. Marvel knocked it out of the park with this one.

I'm also on board with the Phase 2 movies.

IRON MAN 3: Hilarious, subversive, smart. The biggest flaw wasn't The Mandarin, it was the over-the-top action ending that was too loud, too busy, and trying too hard. Still, a very good movie.

THOR 2: The weakest Marvel film since IM2. Dull, endless exposition, terribly generic story, uninteresting villains-- This movie was saved from disaster mostly by Tom Hiddleston and an inventive dimension-hoopping finale. But make no mistake, this is a paperweight movie. There is no compelling reason why this story needed to be told, and it shows.

CAP 2: Still, months later, it's hard to shake the feeling that this is the best Marvel movie yet. Evans matures nicely as Cap, and carries the character's moral authority with grace and charm. The action scenes, particularly the centerpiece involving a showdown on, below, and around a highway underpass, are instant classics. Cap's journey is politically relevant, poignant, and thrilling. Jack, Joe Simon, Stan, and Ed Brubaker should be proud.

GotG: Marvel goes Cosmic. It's official, James Gunn does 'Star Wars' better than 'Star Wars'. Or rather, he does 'Ice Pirates' better than 'Star Wars'. The scrappy spirit of '80's B-movies roars back to life in this funny, heartfelt and colorful blast of a film. Sometimes clunky, but always entertaining, this movie is built like a smile-seeking missile and oh boy does it land. Gunn makes seemingly unworkable characters live and breathe, and he blasts a big starry hole in the Marvel horizon by utilizing an unerring sense of scale and an immensely talented art department. The best humor comes from character and this movie has character coming out the wazoo. GotG isn't just a movie that will get comics fans excited about the movies-- It might just be the first movie to make movie fans excited about comics.

That first stinger had everyone cracking up. All the showings were packed too. I think the music selection was phenomenal and was really glad they added to the film without blaring the tunes in my ears.

The one thing I find weird is in my head I always say Thanos like Thay-nos so hearing everyone say it the way they did was kind of off putting but I guess I just need to try and correct it in my mind

I loved this film.
Such a breath of fresh air.

I really, really liked this film, but it was no Star Wars or ESB imo. Not by a long shot.

Yeah, Thor:TDW was definitely the Phase 2 weak spot, but I'd say on the whole, Phase 2>>>Phase 1. Hopefully AoU will be able to put an exclamation point on that.

I get your drift and agree it's not 'Empire Strikes Back'.

But 'Star Wars' now includes three terrible prequels and endless cash-grab special-editon stunts. I would definitely say that GotG qualifies as the closest thing we've gotten to 'Star Wars' since 'Return of the Jedi'.

On that, I definitely agree. It captures the pulp feel, while still being very strong cinema. It takes your breath away with thrills and laughs. Plus, epic ship to ship combat. :woot:

This is what the Prequels should have been.
I don't thing so. The prequels had the right idea. They weren't suppose to be like the OT in feel and tone. It was suppose to be the final years of an epic institution (Republic) and its warriors (Jedi). The problem was some of the worst execution in the history of film.

GotG is more like the OT, but still very much its own thing. Which is why it works very well.

You know, after sleeping on this, I think that Gunn has done an even better job than Whedon here. In the way the characters are introduced more concisely and are fully realized without the need of back stories. You just GET these characters, their ins and outs, and what drives them so efficiently.

And the emotional beats are much more powerful and real than anything in Avengers i feel. There is some suitably tense moments as well.

Hmmmm...

This movie got my girlfriend to tear up, which I view as a rousing success. She went in thinking it was going to be extremely stupid, and I pretty much forced her to come with me. She was engaged almost immediately; laughing at all the right spots, asking me who all the characters were (she remembered the tesseract from the Avengers, I was impressed), and said Groot was without a doubt her absolute favorite character.
I don't have the time to write a review, but I'd say this is easily Marvel's best alongside the Avengers and CA:TWS.

Well, I feel like Whedon gets a bit of a handicap for having to work with characters whose personalities, back-stories and main arcs had already been established by other people while Gunn & co. got to build these characters from the ground-up and kinda do whatever he wanted with them. I remember when Whedon got to do that with Serenity - it had a small fraction of the budget that Gunn had here but the emotional beats and characters were just as effective. That said, I do believe Gunn is the first MCU director to have proven himself a worthy successor to the Avengers franchise if he wants it whenever Whedon leaves. He did a phenomenal job with this and handled the ensemble perfectly.

...And I'd kinda love it if he and Whedon co-wrote Avengers 3.

Yea that is true actually. I guess whilst Whedon had something to build off of, that can be a handicap like you say too.

But i think Gunn balanced the leads better. I don't think one single Guardians gets short shrift. Whereas with Avengers i think Thor, for example, wasn't really done justice.

I agree that if anyone takes over from Whedon, it has to be Gunn. No doubt.

Anyway has anyone seen these posters before?

Loved it. Very fun movie.

The crowd was totally into it. It's possibly my favorite Marvel film behind Avengers and Winter Soldier.

I geeked out at finally seeing Thanos, knowing the bigger role he'll have down the line...

Glad you liked it Darth :) where would you rank it?
I am still trying to put my thoughts together on it. I wasn't the biggest fan of the pacing early on or a bit in the middle, the plot was extremely basic there was the gray cgi monster for a bit, and I am not sure all the more sentimental moments didn't quite work for me.

But I loved, loved the characters, the general attitude, the music and I think I want to marry the final act. Especially the the Nova Corps [BLACKOUT]net[/BLACKOUT], Yondu's [BLACKOUT]arrow[/BLACKOUT], Groot's [BLACKOUT]clearing of the hall[/BLACKOUT], Nebula's [BLACKOUT]escape [/BLACKOUT]and Star-Lord's [BLACKOUT]distraction[/BLACKOUT].

Walking out of the theater I couldn't decide who my favorite was. Peter, Rocket, Groot and Drax all brought something really awesome to the table. Peter was the enjoyable rogue (I still can't get over how awesome his [BLACKOUT]going back for his walkman was[/BLACKOUT]), Rocket the attitude, Groot the adorable, and Drax the more dry humor. All were just so enjoyable.

In the end, after one viewing I don't think it is anywhere near the film TWS is, but I definitely take it over everything else in phase 2 right now. It will take a few more viewing for me to see where it fits amongst TFA, Thor, Iron Man and the Avengers. Could be at the top of those 4, or the middle. Not sure. But I definitely like it a lot.

Good to hear.

For me, it's one of those rare films where just thinking about it makes me laugh. The part where Groot goes absolutely ape-****... then just casually turns around and gives Quill and Drax that big grin still makes me laugh.

And the finale act might be the same old same old big bombastic destruction... but it's full of so many cool moments that distinguish it. I also really loved the touch of that red Xandarian woman and child turning out to be Roman Dey's wife and kid. It shows that Gunn has such a great attention to detail and knows that the small moments are important.

I didn't catch that a first. Then my brother pointed it out, and I was like, "cool". :word:

Yeah Groot and Drax's reactions to the hall clearing had my brother and I cracking up, along with the rest of our theater. Also, this may see odd, but a lot of young women in the theater tonight. And they seemed completely into it, more so then the men. Was a pretty interesting crowd for a Marvel film.

Yea, it was like a microcosm of what the attack on Xandar meant. These are people with families etc. It does a good job of making the attack threatening and the heroes saving the day meaningful.

And yea i think there is a lot of things for women to love here. Groot in particular i imagine will be a favourite.

Well, once again Marvel wins by adhering to it's central principle: DO THE CHARACTERS JUSTICE. The plot can be stupid, the villains can be forgettable, but always make sure the personalities of the characters ring out loud and clear.

It's not a perfect formula, but it's the best possible approach to comic book adaptations and the warmth towards the characters is infectious. I love the Guardians and I never read the books before.

Still I'd say Cap 2 wins as the best in terms of characterization, action, and story. Although 'Guardians' is much, much, much, MUCH funnier.
