IM3 is a great film though, lol. Don't get me wrong though, Chris. Thor 2 is ok, and has moments of greatness, but I hated Malekith, hate that Thor was an afterthought in his own sequel, hated that Loki lived (seriously...his death was fantastic), the humor sucked (especially Darcy & Darcy Jr.), and the color palette pissed me off.
hahaha
[/BLACKOUT]I really, really liked this film, but it was no Star Wars or ESB imo. Not by a long shot.I'm also on board with the Phase 2 movies.
IRON MAN 3: Hilarious, subversive, smart. The biggest flaw wasn't The Mandarin, it was the over-the-top action ending that was too loud, too busy, and trying too hard. Still, a very good movie.
THOR 2: The weakest Marvel film since IM2. Dull, endless exposition, terribly generic story, uninteresting villains-- This movie was saved from disaster mostly by Tom Hiddleston and an inventive dimension-hoopping finale. But make no mistake, this is a paperweight movie. There is no compelling reason why this story needed to be told, and it shows.
CAP 2: Still, months later, it's hard to shake the feeling that this is the best Marvel movie yet. Evans matures nicely as Cap, and carries the character's moral authority with grace and charm. The action scenes, particularly the centerpiece involving a showdown on, below, and around a highway underpass, are instant classics. Cap's journey is politically relevant, poignant, and thrilling. Jack, Joe Simon, Stan, and Ed Brubaker should be proud.
GotG: Marvel goes Cosmic. It's official, James Gunn does 'Star Wars' better than 'Star Wars'. Or rather, he does 'Ice Pirates' better than 'Star Wars'. The scrappy spirit of '80's B-movies roars back to life in this funny, heartfelt and colorful blast of a film. Sometimes clunky, but always entertaining, this movie is built like a smile-seeking missile and oh boy does it land. Gunn makes seemingly unworkable characters live and breathe, and he blasts a big starry hole in the Marvel horizon by utilizing an unerring sense of scale and an immensely talented art department. The best humor comes from character and this movie has character coming out the wazoo. GotG isn't just a movie that will get comics fans excited about the movies-- It might just be the first movie to make movie fans excited about comics.
Yeah, Thor:TDW was definitely the Phase 2 weak spot, but I'd say on the whole, Phase 2>>>Phase 1. Hopefully AoU will be able to put an exclamation point on that.I'm also on board with the Phase 2 movies.

On that, I definitely agree. It captures the pulp feel, while still being very strong cinema. It takes your breath away with thrills and laughs. Plus, epic ship to ship combat.I get your drift and agree it's not 'Empire Strikes Back'.
But 'Star Wars' now includes three terrible prequels and endless cash-grab special-editon stunts. I would definitely say that GotG qualifies as the closest thing we've gotten to 'Star Wars' since 'Return of the Jedi'.
t:
where would you rank it?I don't thing so. The prequels had the right idea. They weren't suppose to be like the OT in feel and tone. It was suppose to be the final years of an epic institution (Republic) and its warriors (Jedi). The problem was some of the worst execution in the history of film. This is what the Prequels should have been.
Well, I feel like Whedon gets a bit of a handicap for having to work with characters whose personalities, back-stories and main arcs had already been established by other people while Gunn & co. got to build these characters from the ground-up and kinda do whatever he wanted with them. I remember when Whedon got to do that with Serenity - it had a small fraction of the budget that Gunn had here but the emotional beats and characters were just as effective. That said, I do believe Gunn is the first MCU director to have proven himself a worthy successor to the Avengers franchise if he wants it whenever Whedon leaves. He did a phenomenal job with this and handled the ensemble perfectly. You know, after sleeping on this, I think that Gunn has done an even better job than Whedon here. In the way the characters are introduced more concisely and are fully realized without the need of back stories. You just GET the way these characters and what drives them so efficiently.
And the emotional beats are much more powerful and real than anything in Avengers.
Hmmmm...

I shed a tear. And it was the perfect moment for them to name themselves. It was awesome!t:
I am still trying to put my thoughts together on it. I wasn't the biggest fan of the pacing early on or a bit in the middle, the plot was extremely basic there was the gray cgi monster for a bit, and I am not sure all the more sentimental moments didn't quite work for me.Glad you liked it Darthwhere would you rank it?
I didn't catch that a first. Then my brother pointed it out, and I was like, "cool".Good to hear.
For me, it's one of those rare films where just thinking about it makes me laugh. The part where Groot goes absolutely ape-****... then just casually turns around and gives Quill and Drax that big grin still makes me laugh.
And the finale act might be the same old same old big bombastic destruction... but it's full of so many cool moments that distinguish it. I also really loved the touch of that red Xandarian woman and child turning out to be Roman Dey's wife and kid.

But I loved, loved the characters, the general attitude, the music and I think I want to marry the final act. Especially the the Nova Corps [BLACKOUT]net[/BLACKOUT], Yondu's [BLACKOUT]arrow[/BLACKOUT], Groot's [BLACKOUT]clearing of the hall[/BLACKOUT], Nebula's [BLACKOUT]escape [/BLACKOUT]and Star-Lord's [BLACKOUT]distraction[/BLACKOUT].
Walking out of the theater I couldn't decide who my favorite was. Peter, Rocket, Groot and Drax all brought something really awesome to the table. Peter was the enjoyable rogue (I still can't get over how awesome his [BLACKOUT]going back for his walkman was[/BLACKOUT]), Rocket the attitude, Groot the adorable, and Drax the more dry humor. All were just so enjoyable.
In the end, after one viewing I don't think it is anywhere near the film TWS is, but I definitely take it over everything else in phase 2 right now. It will take a few more viewing for me to see where it fits amongst TFA, Thor, Iron Man and the Avengers. Could be at the top of those 4, or the middle. Not sure. But I definitely like it a lot.
