Dat cinematography and design!:wow: Can not wait for this!

There's a part of me who thinks that this isn't shocking.

I like GDT, but like what my friend said about his body of work:

Paraphrasing: "Del Toro's imagination is infectious. I just wish he could make better movies"

I think GDT's writing is often the problem. For a funny guy, his humor doesn't come through, and he oddly writes stilted dialog. Even The Strain's writing can be so hamfisted that it'll leave me confused about the tone of the show.

Have they only seen his English language films?

I read Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities book, and in it he's very open about not writing good dialogue. He's also very open about a bunch of the rest of his flaws. I give him props for that. Although, if you can't write as well as you'd like, either get better or hire a writer. Still, that doesn't stop me from being an uber fan of Mr. Del Toro.

Writing is more than dialogue though. Dialogue is just the tangible thing that people latch onto and complain about. His storylines and themes are strong more often than not. His characters vary.

Of his Spanish films, Ive only seen Pan's labyrinth, but that film is enough to convince me he is a good writer.

My guess is that the issue (or one of them) is with English not being his first language. People never seem to bring this up. Language and its use is more than just rote memory. So while he has a decent english vocabulary and can speak it quite well his ability to tell stories with the language may still be a bit handicapped even after years of speaking and learning the english language. Id say this effects his storytelling abilities to some degree. He writes stuff in english that to us (native english speakers) sounds corny or just odd and too him it seems fine or he hopes its fine. I try to cut him a bit of slack for this.

Oh I know. I was just highlighting the fact that he himself said he's not great at English dialogue.

Dialoge is very important when it comes to plays and film. How many movies have you seen with great ideas and themes with awful dialog? There are many, and usually, that means the movie doesn't hit its potential..

kinda has Coppola's Dracula vibe.
LOVE IT.

I've never had a problem with GDT's dialogue. Is it the greatest that there's ever been, certainly not. But I've never had a moment where it actually took me out of a movie. Probably because he tends to get actors who can sell it well, sort of like how the actors in the Original SW trilogy could sell that clunky dialogue (GDT is nowhere near as bad as Lucas in this regard though).

Pacific Rim though.

^ Yup, thank god GDT is not geeking around this time. not to mention with such a fantastic cast.

Pacific Rim was the only time the dialogue (more the delivery of the dialogue) had me rolling my eyes.

Pacific Rim's script is odd.

I think the dialog isn't as clever as it should've been. Only if it had a few more polishes…because it felt rough around the edges.

The first few episodes of The Strain had that same problem. Tonally, was it suppose to be cheesy, or was it just badly delivered?

I liked Travis Beacham's Pac Rim script before GDT touched it more than the final draft.

Agreed about The Strain. I like it, but there were times I couldn't believe the actors were playing some of that stuff straight.

It's some sick design and costuming. I hope they campaign for an Oscar nomination for best production design or best costume design.

Loving the eerie vibe. This has to be Rated R, right?

If GDT has has his way then yeah it will be R.

“Crimson Peak is a much, much, much smaller movie, completely character-driven. It’s an adult movie, an R-rated movie, pretty adult. Shockingly different from anything I’ve done in the English language. Normally, when I go to do a movie in America for the spectacle and younger audience, for Blade or whatever. This movie’s tone is scary and it’s the first time I get to do a movie more akin to what I do in the Spanish movies.”

“[Crimson Peak] has moments that are very visceral, physical violence. You’re in this sort of sedate romance and then there is this brutal moment where you’re like, “Whoa!” And it has a lot of kinky moments. The only kinky moment I’ve ever shot is the leg f**k in The Devil’s Backbone. [laughs] This has a little more kinkiness than that.”

"It’s a very traditional Gothic romance,” del Toro told Fangoria, “and at the same time very modern in the sense that it has strong sex and violence. I’ve never done a movie that has anything remotely kinky, but this movie is a little kinky and the violence is very shocking. So you’re traversing through a tranquil Gothic romance, and all of a sudden this terrifying and sexual stuff comes in. It’s very much a haunted-house movie, but I don’t think there’s a ghost of a chance that we’ll get a PG-13 rating.”
